Shrek 4 didn't end or start anything. It was literally just a fakeout story that ends the same way how it starts
It had Shrek during a mid-life crisis going back to his roots blinded by nostalgia before coming to realize that he threw away everyone and everything he grew to care about with a villain that outright won setting the stakes higher than ever before. In a meta sense, the film was about how Shrek as a franchise was growing stale and lost its edge that made it a hit in the first place. It capped off Shrek's arc from a loner who had nothing to a hero who had everything and was finally satisified.
Nostalgia bait for 2000s kids, they probably will reference the memes.

also the references like the Mud & Worms Cereal which was a limited edition cereal that came out in in several countries to promote Shrek 2 (its still sold in some places), the Sara Lee Cheesecake is a reference to Supermariologan's videos in which Shrek likes eating said Cheesecake, them only watching TV commercials is a joke on how Kids do not know the difference between TV commercials, Movies, Youtube Videos and TV shows and Shrek farting the theme song of Millie's Math House which was an Educational PC game from the 90's that has a strange sounding theme song composed of Honking noises

They missed the mark with Fairy Godmother in 2. Worst character of the Shrek quadrilogy. Her model alone is pretty bad.

Fairy Godmother sucked
Fairy Godmother is the type of parent who forces her kids to become celebrities. She acts like she's doing it for them, but we all know Fiona wouldn't match well with Charming and Fairy Godmother was doing it all for her own gain. This is what makes her a good villain. She's another great foil for the messages against vanity the franchise has.
Her character model is still awful and her foul personality is more annoying than it is entertaining.
Also the benefits are pretty obvious. She will be the mother of the King and already has complete control over his life. Charming is her puppet to rule with.
Whether you accept it or not, Shrek 2 is objectively the foulest of the Shrek films and one of the foulest Dreamworks films.
And that's why we love it.

I would honestly feel more respect for Shrek 2 if it had mild swearing like Antz and Shrek 1. At least that would make the film be upfront about the audience is targeting, instead of trying to masquerade as a family film.
Shrek 2 teaches a better message of acceptance and love to kids than any crap they put on TV these days.
Whatever message it tries to send ends up getting overshadowed by all the foulness which the film has in spades.
