It's a damn shame cos I remember this movie being peak when I was a teenager. Modern humour is stemmed so much from the lolrandumb aspect of this and other early 00s improv-driven comedies that on a rewatch it just feels dumb and old, and dare I say, reddit. My gf didn't laugh once the whole movie.

It was funny because Ferrell was one of the first mainstream guys who did stupid fricking moron..... but somehow cool. Which is something that's easily aped on the surface but actually extremely difficult to do well. Him and his movies are essentially responsible for most of the mid to late 00's "internet humor" which through osmosis and regurgitation became 'reddit humor' that everyone with two brain cells to rub together loathes now because it's so done to death.
Yeah I get that. You summed it up pretty well. He was the pioneer of that kind of humour, but unfortunately it (d)evolved into the modern "narwhal bacons at midnight xD" type of shit. It's strange because I really feel like comedy as a genre is completely fricking dead and the 00s was its last hurrah.
I think the time could be right for a return to straight man-surrealist comedies like Better off Dead. But writing 'haha and then he acts like a stupid fricking moron but like it's SO AWKWARD/dude weed' is so, so easy to do compared to surrealism and juxtaposition so quite literally 100% of new comedies have elements of Ferrell's routine in them to this day which is why it continues to feel beaten dry and unfunny.
You would need talented writers and a literal strict ban on ferrell humor/seth rogan 'humor' to try something even a little fresh.
I don’t think any of that had to do with Will Ferrell. People always say “this is what led to internet humor” but it’s not true, internet humor was only ever popular amongst children, nerdy teens and adults, and degenerates. The lolrandum stuff is purely thanks to nerdy guys inspired by Monty Python and British comedy, as well as tons of random movies these people quoted like some kind of second language. 99% of these people were never funny, it was just harmless silly crap.
Anchorman was funny because it had great characters, making fun of the cartoonish ideas of manliness (mustaches, bourbon, oak wood, wearing a suit) while also celebrating it, and it had a great cast. It didn’t even do well in theaters, it became popular after. It was really quotable, which is why it was spread into early memes.

It's kinda weird how what basically boils down to the who's who of unfunny nepo-hires somehow managed to make one of the most genuinely funny movies of all time. Will Ferrell especially is about as funny as cot death as a comedian. Always was. Same with the rest of the cast. It's weird.
