The actors weren’t told who would come down the stairs so their reactions were genuine

      It's true

I worked on the set as a horse shoe cobbler and to keep it a secret his trailer had "el anonymouso" written on it and a distinct smell of paprika emanated from it

Confirmed, I was an audio cable unplugger on set.

he didn't need a trailer he was in one scene for about 8 seconds
it could of course still be a fake story, but not by that logic

Surely if their reactions were genuine they'd be laughing and saying hi to Geoffrey

you can see orlando bloom do almost exactly that. instead of being shocked, he clearly smiles for a second when he realizes who it is

Is a single "their reaction was genuine" story true? I assume most improv stories are fake too.

I worked on the pirates set as a camera rotator and I was standing next to Orlando and I started and his reaction was very genuine

I doubt it tbh, the one about Alien definitely isn't because it probably took at least an hour to rig up John Hurt into the exploding chest prosthetic, and would have taken hours and hours to reset if someone fricked it up due to being surprised

If they're a professional actor none of their reactions are genuine. Whether a camera or stage is present is irrelevant.

I can confirm this is true, I worked on set as the boot remover for the cast and even I had no idea Geoffrey Rush was returning to the franchise.
If you watch the behind the scenes material on the DVD, my reaction is genuine when Rush puts his legs on my lap for me to remove his boots and I look up and see his face

It was ok because pirates never tried to take itself seriously and the fandom never took it seriously either. This caused different problems down the line, but Barbossa returning was ok.

yea the first one stands so well on it's own you can ignore all the other films if you want.

It was an asspull, but Barbossa actor is fricking great so I wouldnt mind him returning for another movie. Also, the way he made his appearance was pretty cool

barbossa died normally and sexy, sexy, luscious tia dalma had his corpse in back room throughout the whole movie, she had to work out some kind of spell to revive him and get his soul back (presumably from hell)
she is also of course later revealed to be a goddess or whatever
jack got eaten by a mythical beast that puts your soul in limbo

When I worked on set as a ship mast inspector, I would sometimes overhear Geoffrey and Depp debate about Mahjong. I could never quite hear the exact details of it, but I remember Depp yelling something about "melds". I never saw them play the game.

The first and second movies already dealt with undead zombies and fantasy sea people. Barbosa's return was hardly farfetched in comparison and was done as a tasteful cliffhanger with epic music.

Palpatine returned with zero logic other than "we have no idea how to end this trilogy because Rian killed our big bad." If the entirety of Rise of Skywalker weren't absolute shit, the fans may have been more receptive to Palpatine's shoehorned return. His laugh at the end of the trailer had most people hyped or at least curious. But then we saw the movie and it was a dumpster fire.
