How come nobody has made a huge 4 HOUR documentary about the ALIEN movie? Did it not have the same cultural relevance?

Are you gonna watch this? I liked ROBODOC and this might be even better.

If you haven't watch Blade Runner with Syd Mead's commentary, it's awesome. Tons of info. Ridley was a master of photography but he really had an amazing crew on that set.

One thing to note about Blade Runner is that Rutger Hauer's performance saved the idiotic script and Ridley's Hamfisted Jesus imagery which would fail if it were for any other actor.

Rutger is based. Ridley still doesn't know what he wants to achieve with Blade Runner.

White Squall and Legend are amazing films. Also, GI Jane, Exodus, and Robin Hood, while flawed, are still kino. Frick anybody who disagrees.

Negative IQ take. I'm sure Exodus is the most watchable movie of the decade. That and don't forget "I'm gonna have to science the dogshit out if this unsalvageable dogshit movie". Truly in a league by themselves. Literally. Leagues below 3000 meters of dogshit.

The only fault I have with Aliens is that Giger wasn't brought on to do more designs. Cameron's crew did astounding engineering work, but showing Hadley's Hope was a mistake, even for an outline of Giger's ship design. And considering they did not have a clue how to twist the formula they just added bunch of tubes to Alien backs and had the mother be a real spindly creature with fricking giant stingray ellipsoid head. It works but it's really stock.

If anyone had the balls to truly follow Giger's designs there would be an extremely phallic Aliens movie with breasts. The threat he envisioned was always one of weird sexual violence. Think of Grace Jones merged with a Praying Mantis.

Ridley fricked up the Universe completely by explaining the Engineers so I'd just completely ignore that. Just set it around a small Alien temple based on Giger's spray paintings.

Giger approached the production of aliens but was rejected by Cameron. The king of the world wanted to design the alien queen from scratch and he got it.

From what I heard Cameron had presented an idea for another alien movie to Fox and they rejected it in favor of Alien vs Predator.I'm very curious to know what Cameron was cooking with this movie.

The engineers aspect is my least favorite element of the alien mythology.

Got a source for this? I agree for engineers, but Giger's engineer design is the single most memorable aspect of the franchise.

          >Giger's engineer design is the single most memorable aspect of the franchise.
not really. nobody really cares about it. they just see it as an origin piece. only ridley scott focuses on it because of his god obsession.

The real reason he rejected gigers sexual designs was because he wanted to a large audience to watch the movie. Alien was already a genre b-picture with a big budget. And JC's ideas were more in sync with the yuppie homosexuals hill and giler. Plus maternal imagery is more positive and reinforcing for the audience and brings in the female audience instead of more wieners and phalluses which would have alienated audiences further.

yeah honestly giger was a good jumping off point but the guy was a depraved pervert

Somehow he may be the proto-hentai addict but of course in his case it's not hentai but it's antichrist inspired imagery like satanic depiction of rape with emphasis on bizarre looking phalluses and orifices.

Nah, I'd say it's the other way around. Adults just want to be entertained / see something they haven't seen before / keep up with current ideas being promoted / watch out of morbid curiosity. Rather, it's children want to know all the ins and outs of how something was made, since they're still ignorant of the details. Adults already know enough and don't care anymore.

I love Aliens because it's simultaneously structured much like Terminator 2 - although Cameron did not do Alien, it has the same relationship with it as T2 has with T1.

    >ordinary female protag becomes action hero
    >the movie is one big chase
    >robot from the first movie is now an ally
    >original threat is now so present it seems impossible to overcome
    >persistent nuclear threat
    >psychiatric assesment
    >(foster) parents die a gruesome death

And it mixes squad combat for good measure (even Michael Biehn is there, like it's the future and he's leading marines against Skynet). Other than that, it also looks like a Kurosawa movie and I'm not sure if the great man from Japans ever addressed it. Especially the way Cameron uses the weather effects, even when indoors. Wind is constantly blowing, something is dripping, arcing, you can feel the dirt, grime, vent air, atmospheric pressure, it really does feel like an alien world or a partly as a post apocalyptic scene from Ran mixed with a village in Seven Samurai.
