It turns out Jaune is actually the Lancelot of Remnant, and the entire cast has read an incredibly famous children's story about his adventures when they were kids.

He's the most famous knight in history. Literally what the average person on Remnant thinks of when they hear the word "knight". Blake talks for a bit about how his story was her favourite growing up and she's a total fangirl for him until she finds out he's Jaune.

He falls into a Wonderland-like dimension where Remnant's gods are from and time flows differently there. He helps 2 kids from Remnant get back home, and one of them turns out to be a famous author from hundreds of years before Jaune was born who goes on to write about all their adventure together.
Anon is making it sound cooler than it is. The heroes get sucked into Alice in Wonderland, he gets sent back in time while in Wonderland and end up being one of the characters in the story.
So, real answer.
In Remnant there's a fairytale called The Girl Who Fell Through the World, basically Remnant's version of Alice in Wonderland. Alyx (Remnant Alice) is the main character, but the most popular character is The Rusted Knight, Alyx's guide and protector. At the end of Season Eight, Team RWBY and Jaune fall through the world too and end up in the same place, but do to touching a clock fruit Jaune goes back in time and then has to live there an unspecified amount of time (speculated ~20 years) until RWBY gets there. During that time, he becomes a local hero, his gear rusting over time until Alyx and her brother Lewis arrive, where the events of the fairytale happen, if slightly different. When RWBY gets there, they recognize the place they end up from the fairytale and are super excited to meet The Rusted Knight, only for him to take his helmet off and reveal that he's Jaune.
