Was The Middle any good? Never hear anybody talk about it.
It's comfy first and foremost. It won't turn your world upside down but it's solid enough in all aspects to warrant a watch if you yearn for this kind of content.
No, it was a blatant attempt at recreating Malcolm in the Middle, but it falls flat due to the lazy attempt at humor that aims to please everyone instead of trying to be funny, and due to the uncharismatic cast.
The characters were annoying, most of all Sue and the font obsessed autist who was supposed to be the Heck version of Dewey.

The best way to put it was that it very proudly proclaimed "this IS your parents sitcom" where the characters all felt like expy's of different sitcom characters with the edge taken out. The audience felt like it was almost entirely middle aged mothers and I never knew another kid/teen my age who was watching while it aired.
Dewey, in particular, was a special kind of pandering because he was mostly made for mothers of autistic kids to point and onions face at. He's pretty much built on positive stereotypes those kinds of moms spout.

The Heck's aren't even half as dysfunctional as Malcolm's family. Plus, the middle had some of the good old school sitcom style endings in some eps whereas MiTM never had those.

It's pretty comfy and doesn't shit on white people constantly, which is a breath of fresh air. It's nobody's favorite but it's not bad when you just want something running on the tv. Some goofy humor in it, and the gay kid makes a great comedy relief character.
