Smile was like a corporate attempt to superficially combine a bunch of indie horror elements, notably Ari Aster's shtick into some Blumhouse bargain bin flick. It was pretty shit aside from the monster in the end.

I feel it's a spit on the audience face when your movie was unreliable narrator pov and "He was on a coma all along and it was all a dream!" type of stuff
Smile does this, oculus does this, and many others
    Get frickd with your bullshit

      Anonymous

Oculus wasn't really "it was all a dream", it was the mirror manipulating reality, and this concept was introduced basically from the start, so it wasn't some asspull. But there are examples when this does happen. For example I really didn't like that Kaufman pulled this in i'm thinking of ending things, I know that's how the book is, but it's so generic, he should have just left it ambiguous what the frick was happening in the movie rather saying "lol, it's a dying jannie's imagination"

        Anonymous

...what? Smile doesn't do that. There's no coma or anything like that, it ends with the main girl getting killed by the smile monster

Oculus ending is "the mirror did it" and smile ending is "smile monster did it", it's literally the "all you were seeing was all fake lol" case and you are deluded in thinking otherwise
I don't care if the movie outright tells me "the last 20 min of the movie are not real", that doesn't make it good, you are literally wasting 20min of the audience time and may as well play an unrelated short or something, it's lame writing trying to make it smarter than what you can actually write
A literal monkey can write "and then they all wake up in a mental hospital"
Get some fricking actual pride as a writer

She was also the main actress in the original short film the director made, Laura Hasn't Slept. Her appearance in Smile is sort of a loose remake.

Creature design in that was awful. Parker Finn is lucky he had the guy from It Chapter 2 help/inspire him for Smile. If he would've had him for Laura Hasn't Slept, and put the monster from Smile in that, overall that would be a much better project than padding out Smile as a feature film with boring trite shit like he did.

              She cute.

Reminds me a lot of Dafne Keen, same kind of strong features and slightly swarthy look.

She should've been the main character as she is much more attractive than Sosie Bacon. Although I guess they wanted a more homely looking woman as the lead to feel more sympathetic towards. Sosie Bacon just looks way too much like her dad, ie she looks fugly as a woman. Looking at her IG, she has gotten worse with more tattoos and dyke haircuts. Sad!

                Anonymous

Well she's meant to be an experienced therapist so looking more ordinary and circa 40 makes sense.

That why the roles should've been switched. Although Caitlin's sardonic grin is much more unsettling than Sosie's one we see at the end. And Sosie acted as hard as she could for this, and came across as believable, probably better than Caitlin could've done trying to fake an accent the whole time.

I think they did fine with what they had, but could've done a lot better if the director had a better scriptwriter. He apparently wrote it himself and is doing the sequel as well. There is not one bit of memorable dialogue throughout the whole movie, just the typical cliched crap we've all seen and heard before. He is good at creating atmosphere, tension, and an eye for visuals and has tons of money now to pick a screenwriter, he should've done it before attempting a sequel. I just know this one is going to flop.

It was fine, well made but way too derivative of other recent horror films, to the point of recreating whole scenes. It was also too reliant on jumpscares, if they reduced them by 40-50% percent the ones remaining would be more effective. The director has some skill in creating mood and tension so I'm interested in the sequel.

It Follows and The Ring (2002) were heavily referenced. Even the well known "saw her face" scene where they speak of a previous victim and then suddenly cut to their corpse being uncovered is done 1:1.

While I thought the true reveal monster design was great, Smile overall was really boring and predictable. None of the scares were truly effective outside monster reveal. The whole "I'm cursed, now I have to investigate it and prove I'm not crazy" plot is so tired at this point. Just watch The Ring (2002) [or the '98 original for that matter], Final Destination (2000), It Follows (2014), The Babadook (2014), Hereditary (2018), or any of the other curse movies Smile is ripping off. Hell, just watch Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) for an actual good Horror film this one desperately wishes it was.

This is also why I will not be watching the sequel. First one already had a black boyfriend, israeli boyfriend, and POC characters shoved in everywhere, I knew that this director would cuck out and just make the following film even more pozzed. It's ironic he said he wasn't going to make a sequel at first, but then caved after they threw the shekels at him, probably under conditions he panders more towards minorities.
