wreck it ralph wasn't really portrayed as a forgotten character and was a clear parody of donkey kong, and the parody was too on the nose. gwimbly made a bunch of really obscure references, none of which were too specifically obvious, and they also had a bunch of obscure video game jokes that a normal audience would never appreciate. for example, on this far shot of the building you can see that gwimbly actually seems to have a distance model.
The dithering going away for the cameo call was one of my favorite parts. And there's a part in the CEO's office where his arm is next to Pim's face and it keeps changing shape. Its so charming.
Because it was made by people who were actually familiar with what they were referencing rather than a committee/boardroom full of out of touch people who have to keep dumbing down their own work for higher-up producers who are even more out of touch than they are

So that first domino had to fall to give us SF.

Depends on the premise. Mr Frog was strong enough to all be one episode, but sometimes I dont mind splitting it if the guest characters arent as interesting, or as an excuse to give Alain and Glep more screentime

Yeah, his improv and off the cuff statements are really funny. But Leo and Satan wasn't. And outside of a couple of jokes in the Christmas special, neither was Hellbenders.
To be fair, Oney's friend also wrote and helped with Leo and Satan but it seems like they both have the same sense of humor and that doesn't help if you're trying to make a show
Smiling Friends (and a much minor extent Hellbenders) work because Zach and Michael's sense of humor are similar but different enough to make every episode feel unique
Hellbenders wasn't really rejected in favor of Smiling Friends, it was pitched like a decade prior. But yeah, Smiling Friends is definitely way funnier. I enjoyed Hellbenders back in the day but it doesn't hold up now outside of a few jokes.
I used to love Hellbenders but it doesn’t really have a premise or characters that could have given it legs, I think Zach and Chris were too young to deliver a good show and the rejection helped them in the long run

Family Guy's true advantage is that you can watch clips out-of-context and you can understand it because there's no context to begin with. I don't know if that applies to Smiling Friends, though.

I remember Rick & Morty getting a lot of shit back when it first started because viewers found the pupils distracting, but Smiling Friends never seemed to have that issue (possibly because the rest of the show looks just as charmingly crude)

Adult Swim asked Dan Harmon to pitch something, Dan reaches out to an animator from the Channel 101 days to make a cartoon that becomes a hit, that animator reaches out to an animator friend who makes a spoof of the hit show who ends up getting his own show on the channel who then reaches out to his friend to make another show for the channel. So that first domino had to fall to give us SF.
I fricking detest Dan Harmon, but yeah his celebrity status in the early 2010s is loosely to thank for Smiling Friends ever existing.
I think it was Mike Lazzo being terminally online that did it. He saw that the target demographic for Adult Swim wouldn't shut up about Community.
Fricking moron. Yeah Zack is probably funnier but the show wouldnt be nearly the success it is without the combination of their two styles and senses of humor.
I agree, I feel like Cusack and Zach balance each other, it's the combination of both styles and humors that keep things fresh, Zach likes to explain everything with long jokes while Cusack throw some fast compeltely random moments while you are distracted.

So which do you prefer more, when episodes are just one continuous plot, like the Halloween one, or when it's divided into A and B plots like the pilot or the Mr. Frog episode?
Depends on the premise. Mr Frog was strong enough to all be one episode, but sometimes I dont mind splitting it if the guest characters arent as interesting, or as an excuse to give Alain and Glep more screentime
I like the A plot and B plot approach and I really liked how the Gwimbly episode split up Charlie and Pim.
The Halloween episode is the only boring episode of the show IMO
After sitting through season 7 of Rick and Morty I don't want to watch an episode that doesn't have an A and B plot in my life ever again.

Damn, I'm thinking back to season 7 and they really didn't have any B-plots, huh? Only one I can recall was the finale and that's technically because "Rick" got distracted and was split from Morty. No wonder the whole season felt so off even outside the voices.
I liked the back half of the season but the first few episodes sure were lame. I almost dropped it if not for this season's fake clip show.

The pilot and the shorts doesn't really give much premise compare to Smiling Friends.
The character designs makes me not want to watch Hellbenders. The tiny face on giant head shit just seems so droll that I don't want to give the show a chance.
That's something you'd see on a character they interact with for 20 seconds on SF, because that's about as far as you can take a design like that.

It would've been more Aqua Teen/Billy & Mandy. "Friends have weird things happen to them." I like with Smiling Friends that there's a good reason why weird things happen: it's their job to deal with that stuff. That and let's be honest, Chris O'Neil isn't a funny writer.

he can definitely write skits and do improv. Dragonzball P still makes me laugh. But I would be curious to see what a long form story from him would look like. I bet I'd be disappointed.
Yeah, his improv and off the cuff statements are really funny. But Leo and Satan wasn't. And outside of a couple of jokes in the Christmas special, neither was Hellbenders.
To be fair, Oney's friend also wrote and helped with Leo and Satan but it seems like they both have the same sense of humor and that doesn't help if you're trying to make a show
Smiling Friends (and a much minor extent Hellbenders) work because Zach and Michael's sense of humor are similar but different enough to make every episode feel unique
Hellbenders wasn't really rejected in favor of Smiling Friends, it was pitched like a decade prior. But yeah, Smiling Friends is definitely way funnier. I enjoyed Hellbenders back in the day but it doesn't hold up now outside of a few jokes.

I know that. What I'm saying is I'm glad their first attempt failed, so they improved it with the next project.
I used to love Hellbenders but it doesn’t really have a premise or characters that could have given it legs, I think Zach and Chris were too young to deliver a good show and the rejection helped them in the long run

I feel like Smiling Friends's popularity online along with Family Guy being met with open arms nowadays is the biggest proof that people just want super outlandish comedies with practically no in-world logic. Just let your characters get caught up in some insane shit and the audiences will come
Family Guy's true advantage is that you can watch clips out-of-context and you can understand it because there's no context to begin with. I don't know if that applies to Smiling Friends, though.

It wasn't a complaint at all, I was just tryna make a silly meme comparing the two shows' different approaches to drawing eyes. I remember Rick & Morty getting a lot of shit back when it first started because viewers found the pupils distracting, but Smiling Friends never seemed to have that issue (possibly because the rest of the show looks just as charmingly crude)
if you ask me its because rick and morty has a distinct style that its world abides by
smiling friends is simply able to get away with much more due to the myriad of different artstyles and character designs in every episode, even on the same character
desmond is a good example, look at the severe contrast between his two hands, his free hand being crudely drawn and the hand holding the gun being extremely detailed. smiling friends' lack of one artstyle allows it to do so much
someone should swap the pupils and see how both styles would look with the other's pupils
