I know this is bait, but I genuinely think this is a stronger season overall so far. The 1st Season Mr. Frog Episode really, really just wasn't that funny to me. I liked the Glep side story more and thats saying something.
Mr. Frog being brought back was an unwelcome surprised, but its okay when the wacky one-note character is only doing his bit for one scene, not a whole episode.
Only criticism I have for the last episode is the end where Charlie and Pim are talking about their wild adventure. In any other show this would (maybe) get a smirk from me, but I was really expecting more from this show. Something like Charlie and Pim actually hating their adventure, or as a twist the events are something that carries on to the next episode or two.

What makes Smiling Friends stand out is the fact that it's one of the best adult cartoons airing currently. However, the show itself is a solid 6-7/10. I don't see it going for a third season. Even three episodes into Season 2 it's already boring.
Just like Rick and Morty, the appeal of the first season was the wackiness and unusual nature of the show compared to everything else. Remember before Rick and Morty, the rest of Adult Swim was just gross out crap in the style of Superjail. Rick and Morty shook this up and was quite funny for it's first season - then it became boring and full of itself.
Now it's all Rick and Morty clones (that one with the evil scientist lady, I thought at first was literally Rick and Morty).

I know this is bait, but I genuinely think this is a stronger season overall so far. The 1st Season Mr. Frog Episode really, really just wasn't that funny to me. I liked the Glep side story more and thats saying something.
Mr. Frog being brought back was an unwelcome surprised, but its okay when the wacky one-note character is only doing his bit for one scene, not a whole episode.
Only criticism I have for the last episode is the end where Charlie and Pim are talking about their wild adventure. In any other show this would (maybe) get a smirk from me, but I was really expecting more from this show. Something like Charlie and Pim actually hating their adventure, or as a twist the events are something that carries on to the next episode or two.
An inverse of the same old trope/joke. Even Rick and Morty knew that they should make the trope sexier by using Boob World or Mermaid Orgies as the punchline.

I was also watching some of the season 1 episodes on the adultswim stream and they're alright.
What makes Smiling Friends stand out is the fact that it's one of the best adult cartoons airing currently. However, the show itself is a solid 6-7/10. It's mostly just overhype from the internet community and if people enjoy it that's fine. I think it watchable but it's just not worth defending in a thread critical of it. It's just an alright show that has it's moments.

I think its just that adult animation (or rather, western animation as a whole) is in a pretty shitty state right now so anything that comes out that's "okay" at best is seen as some sort of holy grail especially when juxtaposed next to everything else these days. Just like Rick and Morty, the appeal of the first season was the wackiness and unusual nature of the show compared to everything else. It's a collection of Zach's hypotheticals hyper spread throughout 13 minutes. Every scene had some comical charm to it, so much so that I can't think of a single scene that wasn't funny or interesting.
I guess you can complain about it not really being structured well as a coherent story but it doesn't need to be as long as it's fun to watch.
