I don’t know about the movie, but in the book Hannibal drugged him using an unnamed wienertail of drugs. But it’s widely known the author verbatim lifted the story of being drugged, then cutting your own face off with pieces of glass and feeding it to dogs. It happened in real life when a man took PCP. It was written about in a book called Practical Homicide Investigation: Tactics, Procedures and Forensic Techniques
