This film is hard to watch
Not the rape, I found that a zesty experience, but the general setting was trying on the audience

it's a druggy film with a lot of weird mystical 'bad dream' vibes, not a comfy western by design

Once Upon a Time in the West was a shit film (besides Morricone's score) and The Good The Bad and The Ugly continues to be the greatest western ever made.

Westerns were at their most kino when the people making them were connected to the actual time period of the Wild West. The classic western actors and directors were either born in the late 19th century/early 20th century or grew up around people who were.
Actual "Americans" with roots in this period barely exist anymore. The culture dies the more the demographics get diluted.

Spaghetti westerns shouldn't even be in the discussion, they're just moronic action movies with no substance

Bullshit. Read up on how John Ford made My Darling Clementine, how much Wyatt Earp lied to him and how much lies were put in the story because his widow threatened to sue the producers. There was as much dishonesty and embellishment back then as it is now.

          >Read up on how John Ford made My Darling Clementine, how much Wyatt Earp lied to him and how much lies were put in the story because his widow threatened to sue the producers
It's based on a novel called Frontier Marshal, which was also adapted by Allan Dwan (whose movie I prefer)
          >There was as much dishonesty and embellishment back then as it is now.
Not nearly as much, if only for the fact that traditional westerns had stories that could be applied to any time and place with valuable and realistic lessons, while spaghetti westerns are invariably some wop's power fantasy about being the best shooter that nobody can frick with in a consequence-free world

          >how much Wyatt Earp lied to him and how much lies were put in the story
'tall tales' were a fundamental part of American frontier culture, bragging of outlandish proportions
          for example

it's crazy to think that he lived old enough to know the modern era

Paul W.S. Anderson talked about this. Studios consider them very risky and don't want to fund them. So directors end up making a western in disguise.

Paul mentions that John Carpenter wanted to make a western, but no studio would fund it. So he made Assault on Precinct 13, which is full of western iconography and is basically a western in disguise.

Assault on Precinct 13 is essentially Rio Bravo/El Dorado/3:10 to Yuma. That's probably why nobody wanted to fund it.

After watching a bunch of westerns, I wanted to travel to Monument Valley, rent a horse and some basic provisions, cigars, whiskey, etc, and camp out for a few days, but apparently it's owned by the Navajo tribe and you can't actually explore it. I thought we conquered all the land and got rid of the indians.
