So I finally saw the entire 1st season, why do (some) people on this site hate it so much exactly?
I'm not gonna pretend it's perfect, the language is definitely excessive and some plot elements are definitely cookie cutter. But overall it was fun watch, the music was amazing for the most part, the visuals and designs are neat (even if it's highly dependent on red, which to their credit they use many shades of to have many places and characters stand out) and frick it, I enjoyed the characters, which it probably the most important aspect of a show.

I think outside of the more polemical anons on this board, most people had similar impressions. Rough at points, definitely needed more episodes to tell the story it wanted to tell, but fun characters and songs. Mostly it's nice to have something produced that feels like the vision of a creator, even if that vision is 2000's deviantart

There's definitely a late aughties sparkledog OC deviantArt feel to some of Vivzie's aesthetics (especially all the noseless characters with shark teeth, frick me it reminds me of bad old times). D5he's hugely inspired by Jhonen Vasquez whose work is arguably among the most iconic of that decade. There's very little that's reminiscent of the second half of the 2010s either, aside from the more tumblresque looking late additions to the cast like Emily and Sera.

Mixed morals for one, rushed writing lack of pacing, the fanbase is very aggressive. It has its positives but it also has its downsides it often gets propped up like the perfect show, but it has some pretty big flaws doesn’t mean it’s bad, but people keep making multiple threads of it at the same time so nit pics become bigger because we get tired of seeing it all the time. Overall though I’d say with the amount of attention it’s been getting and on Cinemaphile’s Cinemaphile not just the rest of the internet. It’s more loved than hated and you’re reaching to complain when you should honestly be grateful. So you get hollow meaningless threads like this one souring the taste of the show in more people’s mouth. TLDR the radio demon is like Dan Harmon he’s not a hasbin he’s just ok.

It's tempting to blame everything on lazy parenting but to be honest, there really is no protecting kids from age inappropriate content anymore. At bare minimum, you'd have to homeschool and forbid unsupervised internet use (and good luck with that now that smartphones are cheap and ubiquitous). You can take precautions like vetting their friends' households before allowing playdates and sleepovers, and only give the younger ones flip phones and devices with parental controls. But in the teenage years, it's out of your hands—you just have to cross your fingers and hope that good rearing is enough to outweigh basically all the pop culture they'll encounter thereafter.

This. The depiction of the afterlife is confusing and poorly thought out, and a lot of the characters are uninteresting. If it were written with more foresight, it could have told a much more compelling story while also posing some moral questions about redemption.
It's genuinely inferior to the quality of the pilot. Worst voices for most characters and doesn't feel like a natural continuation of the pilot at all.

He was just the initial poster boy thanks to being a) the most standout design, b) the most sexualized, and c) getting his own music video before the show aired. NTA, but you're not the first person I've seen lamenting the death of longform video essays, and not just for entertainment discussion. Either it's rambling unedited multi-hour livestreams meant to maximize superchats, or it's disposable ten minute long FotM vids jangling keys for kids with fricked attention spans. It sucks, but it makes sense. Why spend weeks meticulously scripting, recording, and editing one video when you can shit out something with maybe four hours of work and earn the same amount?

He's not my favourite either, but I agree. In terms of humour and attitude, he's a downgrade from his pilot iteration. But he's still one of the few characters where I can see the writers gave half a shit: he has social connections and a history outside the hotel, problems that can't be resolved just by getting musical pep talks, an explanation for his attitude and circumstances, etc. I still think season one should have focused on the hotel's residents and an inevitable conflict with the Vees once Angel's problems with Valentino came to a head.

Yeah, but that was the appeal—he's an abused junkie following an inversion of the golden rule: be cruel to others before they can be cruel to you. That's exactly how I'd expect someone beaten down by literal decades of degradation to act. By making him less callous and meanspirited, the impact of his gradual humanization and rehabilitation is blunted. Also, he's less funny. A show set in hell should have some meanspirited humor from somebody other than the angels, damnit.
Bit of a tangent, but there's one nuance of Angel's character/development that was nerfed to his detriment: his more traditionally masculine elements have been dumped in favour of making him enthusiastically effeminate all the time.
In his original form, there's clearly a conflict over what he's forced to do for work versus who he really wants to be. His background comic starts out with him wanting to do something other than whoring for a change: without Valentino's permission, he attempts to handle a drug deal by himself (harkening back to his past life as a mafioso). But things go wrong and Val tells him to stick to slobbing knobs since that's all he's good for. Similarly, the Addict music video has him fantasizing about lashing out violently and blowing up Val's club and running away with a female friend. He's an enthusiastic bottom homosexual, yes, but his life under Val is too far out of balance toward subservience.
In the show, the tension between masculine and feminine is mostly gone and his issue is more just mistreatment in general. I’ve been aware of the multiple earths thing long before, and it was from a prophet’s experiences with God. Assuming you aren't larping lucid dreaming techniques can help you to retain control while asleep and avoid nightmares.
The first and most important step is to regularly perform "dream checks" in waking life. My go-to is squeezing my nose shut and trying to breathe through it. In a dream you'll still be able to breathe because your actual nose isn't plugged.
Once you're in the habit of doing dream checks you'll start doing them in your dreams which will induce lucidity. Once you know you're in a dream you know you're safe and at least partially in control.
If you find yourself in a frightening place then imagine a door is right behind you, tell yourself out loud there is a door behind you, and when you turn around it'll be there. Picture the safe and familiar place you'd rather be, say out loud that that's what's behind the door, and that's where you'll be when you open it.
Dreams are nothing to be afraid of, just your mind playing tricks on you.
Sometimes I have lucid or semi-lucid dreams, but I can't activate the state, it just happens. My sleep therapist told me to go to bed with the affirmation that I'll be safe and that seems to keep the nightmares away. I've started dream journaling to get control over entering the lucid dream state but in the end I think I'm still scared. The memories of some of my nightmares feel like real trauma that happened to me and I think it's all connected to my childhood.

Most of the songs were bangers. The story really felt badly paced and basically needed double the episodes to even approach any decent characterization. The Vees take up a lot of screen time when they do nothing all season. Viv’s designs are very polarizing, though I was orrery impressed with the overall quality and the detail they slapped into every frame, even though that made some scenes quite busy.
It was a 6/10 experience for me. Fine to watch once and rewatch some favorite parts and talk shit about it on Cinemaphile

How can a sinner increase their power level? Like Alastor is what 80-100 years since he died and yet he is already an Overlord that makes all the background characters run in panic. While re there must be sinners with centuries under their belt and survivors of multiple purges.
Making deals, getting other sinners under a soulcontract with you, possibly getting a more powerful sponsor and of course being more sinful.
That is outside of raw exprience gained over time.
I like to imagine it's similar to Vampire: The Masquuerade in that regard.
You may grow in power but become less human over time. The beast starts taking over, people start going crazy the longer they are down in hell and would have to actively resist it to not lose any semblences of humanity and morality.
Alastor is more demon than man at the point he's at and i think being like that is a soft requirement to have a shot at overlordship. Renouncing your humanity because you won't be able to compete with others unless you're the cruelest piece of shit around. Lute was never human so she can't be sent to hell as a sinner. She was created as an angel to be Adam's second in command/sex slave.

We know that the primary villains next season are the Vees and this one character we've only seen the symbol of in the background, but there's every likelihood there'll be a B-plot where Adam resurrects as a demon.
I'm fairly sure he was supposed to stay dead, but I'm counting on Viv being malleable to fan/coworker pressure. We just need to hit critical mass of Adam/Lute simping and she'll fold. I expect flashbacks from Lute if nothing else.
