So I watched all of this.

The 1st season and most of 2nd were decent if you like some female sensitivity in your kino; it wasn't perfect but it did what it did well; also the build-up of the world was relatively believable because the theocracy was well grounded on religious rules with the exception that it doesn't make much sense that it only takes 4-5 years for current USA to turn into a total dystopia but we could suspend disbelief if it's just for that.

But oh boy did it turn to shit right after they had no more of the original book to go by and started making shit up; it gets especially moronic when it gets to no longer having even religious rules to go by; the commanders of the dystopia are no longer just weak humans who are hypocrites: they literally go out of their way to show off breaking the rules which makes no sense in a theocratic society because they'd have to somehow prove to their own peers they keep some decorum; and when the writing doesn't do that: it just repeats tropes of the 1st/2nd season for the 5th time within 10 episode and gets so tiresome.

All in all: worth it for 1 or 2 seasons if you're into some kino that is not just male capeshit; but I'm not sure it's worth going to the end; and it's a good reminder that most writers are absolutely worthless if they run out of book to copy cat.

I mean come on, they literally prevent women from reading, and start executing people on the streets.
Those things can happen to a single country only if they are invaded by a hostile nation or something.

        >a hostile nation or something
OR, a rising conservative backlash to progressives. It happened in 1930's Germany and it's happening now, the last President is literally being charged with doing a coup. Have you ever met any American religious zealots in 2022?

Sure, but that will mostly get you back to the 1960s, not the 1960s of Saudi Arabia.

            >we'd backslide to a more conservative time, but not THAT conservative
Conservatives are literally talking about repealing the laws that allow same sex marriage and interracial marriage. In states that repeal abortion next month you can rape whoever you want, including underage, and they are legally required to keep the pregnancy.

you'd be in jail and then get out and there's your 12-year-old stepdaughter with your new baby.

also in north carolina the law says consent cannot be retracted once given, which means if she says yes to sex, and then you get violent, it's not rape.

thats for c**ts that count 'regret sex' as rape, sexual violence is still sexual violence

Lol imagine actually thinking they’re gonna ban same sex/interracial marriage. They’re repealing erroneous SC rulings that made a state issue federal. The states will inevitably continue to allow these things

Not sure if this is copypasta or not? The book was the first season only; of course theocrats are hypocrites, if you're in charge who can stop you from breaking the rules? That was already there in the first season when the main Commander would go to sex clubs and cheat on his wife.

The show is probably just as dark and fricked up as GoT but 5 seasons is too much, and it'll probably go to 6 or 7.

It's not a pasta. The point was the book showed the brutality of the commanders to be mostly hypocritical and not explicitly in the open; it makes sense that it would be like that; you can't convince all those families that you have a "nation of god" and then openly act like an atheist as a commander.

When they run out of book they started doing shit like randomly executing people without even giving a theological excuse to it; it wasn't just inconsistent: it was just fricking boring; it's interesting to see a theocracy instead of yet another dystopia of lunatics as if it's a late season of Walking Dead.

        >i was secretly an atheist the whole time
That's not what's going on; it's the same as when a republican politician is all "family values" then gets caught with a gay prostitute. They are pushing an ideology inconsistent with human nature.

Capital punishment has always been a conservative belief, anon. "Repent or die" was a thing for hundreds of years, and still is.

It's based on a thinly-veiled bodice ripper self-insert fanfic from an ugly feminist in the 1980s. The source material was terrible, so the show was always going to be worse.

Agreed. Season 1 and 2 were decent. After Offred escaped the show got really really dumb.

My main gripe as the show went on is that the protagonist has ridiculous plot armor which removes all tension from the show. It’s supposed to be a total domination society where women are cattle/slaves and can be beaten, maimed, sterilized, or sent to a nuclear fallout wasteland if they misbehave, but the protagonist basically starts telling her owner to frick off in front of other people and nothing happens

Oh yeah I noticed that capeshit-tier trope too on the later episodes. E.g. bullets flying by and explosions happening and all plotlines being depended on the outcome of that total randomness.

If a good writer was asked how it could be improved: the right answer is probably "just don't do it after the book is done"; I see no reason for almost any episode after a few episodes into season 2; it reaches the level of "angry women lose all control and maim bad man like toddlers" which is pandering to the lowest common denominator.

    >The 1st season and most of 2nd were decent
i watched until half way through the second series and it was just shit the whole way. the world building is almost non-existent, they never even flesh out what "commanders" are, they are just a giant group of men who are in charge, without the distinct ranks they would clearly need to have, they're all just "commander".

you have absurd soap opera plots which go nowhere, like the lesbian handmaid they inexplicably missed, whose gf gets hanged while she (as a more valuable handmaid) is sent to shovel radioactive dirt and die more slowly over several months, who then gets pardoned when a bomb goes off and the entire US now has a shortage of fertile pussy because a few dozen women were killed.

one standout scene is when the handmaids are rushed into a stadium, bound and gagged, with nooses placed around their necks, they're pissing themselves and having panic attacks, the floor is dropped, and they only move a few inches. then the voiceover says "seriously? what the ACTUAL frick"

also (another plot which goes nowhere) gilead is going to sell kids to mexico and they display their fruitfulness by bringing out toddlers to see the mexican leaders. but because gilead is pure evil and the writers cannot let them have anything going for them at all, not even cruel effectiveness, the handmaid system actually is NOT fruitful as it locks fertile women to infertile men. so what the frick was all that about

I was willing to forget the technical issues with the world-building, because the main focus of the show was how humans allow that brutality to exist. So it made sense that the commander's brutality was hypocrisy behind a mask of religiousness.

It gets completely inconsistent to me when in later episodes not even that facade is kept because without it there's not even a point of showing a theocracy and it gets mundane because it's like watching a late season of the walking dead.

I don't even remember that part with the mexican government.

        >mexican government.
hm nevermind, it's probably in the 1st season, and I watched that back at release time.

that's consistent with the premise, because it's supposed to be theocratic but also hypocritical (and in this case they do pretend to be religious while they do politics).

in the 4th or 3rd season they have some interrogator just murdering people to intimidate the handmaid which doesn't even keep the facade.
