So is Mlaatr basically carried by the Astro Boy-inspired art style and Jenny? After watching the actual show, it's not really that good

It was a mid cartoon for the time period and was literally and actually only remembered for the porn which is a hilarious legacy to have.
The design and characters were memorable but I couldn't tell you what a single episode plot was other than "monster/evil robot of the week and either Brit/Tiff being buttholes or Sheldon being a dweeb" was basically every epsisode.
Brad and Tucker if I remember their names right were basically just there so Jenny could have someone to talk to or be saved, those dudes were the damsel in distress mostly.
The most fricked up episode was addressing the fact that earlier models existed and were basically just left to gather dust in a basement.
For me it was Vexus, Jenny, and the Crust cousins
how many shows that Cinemaphile say is good are actually trash? HARD MODE: no cartoon after 2010
I agree with the Bojack Horseman hate. trash show
BJHM is the quintessential midwit show
duckman is basically a 10 times better version of what bojack tried to explain
>how many shows that Cinemaphile say is good are actually trash?
Honestly, pretty much all of them. There are only 2 kinds of people who obsess over old shows: Nostalgia-blinded manchildren, and pedophiles. There are really only a handful of shows per decade that hold up as more than cheap entertainment for idiot children.
The hate uncle grandpa got was honestly a bit harsh. the show isn't that good but it's also not the worst thing ever
The Clone Wars (2008).
Avatar.
Kalvin and Hobbes
Ed Edd and Eddie. Every episode is the fricking same.
Megas XLR
still has a funny OP
I watched it recently and liked every episode but the one with Coop's cousin. That one sucked.
i couldn't stand the pacing of the shots. that might have just been a problem in the early episodes or low budget episodes, but what i did watch gave me a headache. i get that with some modern shows too. might just be me.
Grossology and HiHi Puffy AmiYumi
people actually think that HiHi Puffy AmiYumi show is good?
I really hope they dont
Never underestimate the power of waifuism
they were completely wasted on such a bland ugly show
Jenny threads are like 18 years old
my sister loved it so I guess so
Yes, it's pretty mediocre overall. Jenny herself isn't even really that good of a character, she's just cute. When I was a kid I watched it basically exclusively for the 1950s-era Astro Boy meets Art Deco aesthetic and found the plots to be really boring.
>Art Deco aesthetic
As a kid, I watched it just to look at the backgrounds. I recall being frustrated once in a while at the characters getting in the way (which probably also speaks to how rough the writing could be at times).
Fun fact: Guts was fricked when he was 9.
>Posts manga
>Mangaka dies
Kek
take that, homosexuals
poor dude
It's a fun action show with a cute robot girl, interesting robot transformations, and art deco art design. It's not rocket science.
It was alright. A lot of the shows short comings imo came from the era and network it aired on. I think it could benefit from an action focused reboot. Same with Danny Phantom.
it had its moments
Holy shit that's kinda crazy, like Bubbles impaling a monster through the mouth with it's own horn
You think Jenny feels bad about marauding robots since she's... one ?
>Nice art
>Cool monster designs
>Memorable characters
>Decent action
>Occasionally funny
It was fine. It was kind of like a less good Powerpuff Girls. The modern fanbase is all about the porn but I feel like the gooners are way too quick to instantly trash the source material for their favorite meme girls.
most mlaatr fans have never seen the show
action
Debatable.
PPG and Dexter had better fights and that weren't even action focused.
the only reason people like it is because of the porn of Jenny
It would be a great show if it had humor. But it feels like it's actively avoiding constructed jokes and comedic payoff. Most you get is slapstick.
Yeah I agree with this, the show basically played its plots entirely straight barring some minor visual gags and that made it feel pretty off. In theory this wouldn't be a problem but the show was barely even taking its plots seriously either, so it's not like it had a strong story to lean on. It was just dull, and I say that as someone that wants to fill Jenny with human sperm cells just as much as any guy.
Yeah I remember there's that episode where her mom treats her like an actual robot servant when her scientist friends are around. And she realizes that's wrong and everyone learns a lesson. But there's no real joke there. It's just like a family sitcom plot played straight but with a bit of levity that never quite elevates to humorous.
Why did her mom even bother to give Jenny a personality? Or any of the XJ sisters at that. It just seems to be a constant inconvenience that stands between them and what they were actually made for. You'd think Nora would've learned by now.
I have no clue. She acts like it was unintended in many episodes. But she keeps including it.
Because Armagedroid. The goal was that one who functions and thinks similar to humans wouldn't end up like that.
Even as a kid I thought it looked cool but lacked humor or good action. And I thought it was weird that Jenny didn't have any female human friends.
>Astro Boy-inspired art style
hardly
it was more Fleischer/UPA with a bit of tezuka sprinkled in
>AI art
I wish MLAATR had stories that were as fricked-up as Astro Boy. At least then it'd probably have been more memorable. Nickelodeon also had Invader Zim, so I don't see why not.
Invader Zim was a result of Nick dabbling its feet in content targeted at older viewers and then pulling back before greenlighting anything else, leaving Zim as the standalone anomaly from that project. In an alternate universe where they didn't ditch that concept maybe MLAATR could have had more fricked up Tezuka-esque shit going on.
Some episodes got about as close as I think they could have gotten away with, like the Exo-Skin from Raggedy Android had a bit of a body horror thing going for it, like Venom and Spider-Man, and did it about as well as they could have. But there was one episode that came to mind recently while I'd been trying to read old Astro Boy manga, and I think they might have tried to do the same thing in MLAATR, but executives meddled.
Kenny YK-9 in the episode Love 'Em or Leash 'Em was a robot boy with AI that made him like a dog. In an Astro Boy storyline dogs were stolen, had their brains removed and put into humanoid cyborg bodies, and brainwashed into thinking they were just robots, because real robots couldn't be made to kill. Something tells me they wanted to make it so Kenny had a real dog's brain, but it was considered too gruesome. Meanwhile Zim had on-screen organ harvesting.
it coulda used more drama, there was an episode where some guy from Skyway Patrol got Jenny's mom arrested and almost had an order signed to have her shut down permanently.. which is pretty fricked up but it plays like any other episode of the show
It could have used more drama, more comedy, more anything. I think they didn't really know what to do with the concept.
I think it's just supposed to be a throwback to older scifi series where the writers don't really know anything about technology, so a robot is basically just a living thing but made like a car, so it can't really grow or change, but can be taken apart and put back together without hurting it. Wakeman even made a robot baby.
Pretty much. It's Cinemaphiles slice-of-life moeshit.
>It's Cinemaphiles slice-of-life moeshit.
Not really. Moeshit is usually about character interactions and general cuteness.
Horse show is Cinemaphile's moeshit
MLAaTR is more like one of those mostly forgotten shonen series that is remembered by a small few as being stylish but mediocre. Like Rave Master or something.
I think it's more like it's too much of a throwback to those 50s and 60s hero cartoons that were about limited action and threadbare plots. Animation and audio quality aside it seriously reminds me of early TV cartoons in terms of content. Basic problem of the week plots resolved simply and wrapped up in a little package to make kids feel good, with minimal comedy.
>Basic problem of the week plots resolved simply and wrapped up in a little package to make kids feel good
God, I miss that. Now everything is a soap opera and you have to watch everything in order and if you're lucky you'll get some semblance of a conclusion after several seasons worth of plot that barely goes anywhere and subplots that either suck or get abandoned entirely.
Fricking Surf Dracula bullshit
First off: nice double dubs.
Second off: Yeah, I absolutely get what you mean. MLAATR has always been carried exclusively by porn and waifu posting. Which I'm not particularly surprised by, it has good designs and everything, but the show itself is shockingly dull. Retrospectively that a bit strange because it's an interesting enough premise, but it's like the show is actively working to be as milquetoastesque as humanly possible. Absolute style over substance is pretty to look at for a while but eventually is going to get boring. Jenny in particular isn't really that interesting of a character, she's just the most bland possible teenage girl stereotype.
I was always fascinated by how jokeless it was. It wasn't like it was trying and just wasn't landing jokes. It wasn't dry or deadpan. There was very little appeal to humor outside of visual gags in the first place. I remember there's an episode with villains that seem to be parodies of Mario and Luigi and they just didn't do anything funny with them. They were just there.
It's weird because it's Rob Renzetti, the same guy who made the newer Mickey Mouse shorts. Which have amazing pacing, timing, and are loaded with jokes. Maybe it's just a matter of Disney telling Renzetti that it HAD to be that way or something, but it's not like he's incapable of it.
i think it was a budget/technology issue mostly.
Limitations breed creativity.
This is the designated bait thread
Give no (you)s
coomer
This thread is pretty full of reasonable takes about the show that aren't outright bashing it, feels like a pretty honest thread to me. I wanna frick Jenny too but that doesn't make the show she's from especially good.
yeah we know, it's weird to see a regular thread that isn't bait
So the show's all style, no substance.
pretty much
also this
Has anyone watched this? I haven't seen anyone talk about renzetti in a while
I mostly know that Ashley Johnson was the voice of Mina in the 1st episode.
apparently CN or Nick didn't like the idea of a little girl hanging out with a vampire
it was nick, but that reason sounds unlikely
Why make more anime threads? You already have this?
The image isn't even from Astro Boy, so it seems to just be a reaction image instead of actually being about Berserk.
It's an anime pic specifically to shit up the board with anime pics. Other thread asks aislop generic questions specifically to put anime pics. Astro boy isn't even Cinemaphile
The movie probably is, since it is from Hong Kong instead of Japan and based on the dub.
The only memorable episode is the one with that tiny robot who wants to dominate the world and maybe the one with the girl who was secretly a robot. It really is a series that became famous mainly because of the designs.
Circuity
moeshit but western
moeshit is way more boring so this doesn't apply at all
Jenny so cute
Guts, my favorite MLAATR character.
