SO OVERRATED

Why do people act like this is so above and beyond other Ghibli movies? It's really not that great.

Objectively(as objective you can be when talking about art) you can in good faith make a good argument for Princess Mononoke or Grave of the Fireflies to be the best, maybe even My Neighbour Totoro but most certainly not Spirited Away.

What's with the massive hype?

True but it bothered me more in this one. The epilogue could have been slightly longer and I found the trauma plotline from the beginning of the movie to not be properly resolved.

sure adults can still appreciate it ( we were all young once) but it's still made for teenagers and their relative lack of experience with the world

          >it's for teenagers.
Western entertainment is for wine aunts and homosexuals. The simple fact is anime made live action obsolete by the time 80s rolled around, and has dwarfed it entirely. This makes the americans go into a muttrage, but it is what it is. Live action is inherently an exhausted, obsolete medium.

why are Ghibli movies so boring?

      Anonymous

because the plots are not good. mononoke and fireflies are the only ones with a decent structure

their philosophy is making the film as they go along they don't have the whole scripts figured out at the start so especially the climax/resolutions tend to be pretty underwhelming and not very satisfying

      >inb4 hurr it's about the feelings and emotion not the story

That IS its direction. It all feels very natural and fairy tale-like, except perhaps the very beginning and the very end. Mononoke has so much useless plot that fails to do justice to those very splendid elements in it.

Yup. People think that if they can mostly make out what's happening in a scene, that's good enough. They don't understand the crispness, the clarity, the detail, and the way colors pop in a proper encode.

Dim wits--bright enough to know something's happening, but too benighted to grasp more than a dark glimpse of what it is--become frightened, dogmatically preachy bullies, concocting simple-minded worldviews that they are desperate to batter into other people's heads to quiet their own inner confusion.

Miyazaki proved he's at least a generational talent for Japan by making princess mononoke and then he made spirited away a few years later and it's easy to watch so everyone in Japan watched it
It was pushed by Disney in the US so it was easy to praise him in the US at that point as well
