Angels reaching lilith will seemingly initiate third impact and destroy humanity utterly, at least this is what kaworu seems to imply.
SEELE doesnt want that to happen because (besides the obvious reason) they want to initiate third impact on their own specific terms that they read in their ancient aliens handbook so that they can use it for instrumentality merging all of humanity into lilith.

its not weird that you're confused by it because the show intentionally does not explain much about what's going on, mainly because most of the characters dont seem to actually know what the frick they are truly doing either.
I'd say if there is any hole in the show, its the fact that most people don't seem to question what the angels are, what exactly they wanted, and why the frick the world government had been secretly building giant robots for 15 years to fight them. There really is no "official" explanation for this in the show.

That's not what I'm saying, what i'm saying is that nobody else does despite the fact that there is no actual explanation given for any of this.
As far as the show makes it clear, the first episode is the first time an angel attacked humanity and the first time an evangelion unit was actually deployed.
So the angels attack earth out of nowhere and Nerv is very conveniently ready for them having built giant robots and built the geofront (that the angels seem to have an oddly specific interest in) into a super fortress despite there seemingly being no public reason for them to do this.
What exactly did the public and the overwhelming majority of Nerv's own employees think Nerv was actually doing? I will reiterate that the angels were an unknown until the very first episode. the truth of Adam at second impact was known only to a very limited portion of higher ups with the top clearance of the UN.

The coming of the Angels was foretold in the Dead Sea Scrolls. You can bet that governments all around the world had been briefed about it, and that's how come NERV got the funding to build their city base and all the money to set up the Evas. Etc

                Anonymous

To add to this - how many "normal" people do you even see in the show? For all we know there are riots around the world after the first angel attacks.

                Anonymous

I find it very difficult to believe that SEELE would share the hidden truth of the Dead Sea Scrolls with anyone beyond their own inner circle considering that the Dead Sea Scrolls are what they based their plans for Third Impact and Instrumentality.
Regardless that is still completely besides my point.
Obviously Nerv was created because the UN higher ups (controlled by Seele) knew the truth of Second Impact. The issue is that the truth of Second Impact was a secret known only to these people. The overwhelming majority of people, including Nervs own personnel, were not on this need to know, so what exactly did they think Nerv was for? This is never explained.

                Anonymous

They didn't share the whole truth, they shared just enough to get the funding and cooperation needed to advance their plans.

Anon, it's shown at the first Angel attack in the first episode that Misato, Ritsuko, and Gendo knew the Angels were coming. I'm pretty sure the regular wrench-turning grunt at least knew "hey, we're building these giant robots because some ayyy lmaos are going to come and attack us". If nothing else, at least told them something like "just in case some ayyy lmaos come sometime at some future date, we're building giant robots".

                Anonymous

So Nerv is some secret MJ-12 like organization created by the UN after second impact to officially deal with military responses for potential alien threats.
They are given an absurdly massive off the books black budget, because they and the UN governance know the truth about second impact (whereas Seele has ulterior motives). they use this to build evas which are ostensibly for dealing with a "potential" alien threat.
The construction of Nerv's fortress is done under the guise of a new capital city construction which was done for... some reason (make a city safe from another impact event or something?)
The theoretical reasoning for why aliens exclusively attack their base would be, "well... the evas are their main threat on earth." Not very convincing but perhaps good enough to cover for a time.
I suppose this is a somewhat satisfactory explanation

Yep pretty much exactly this. Also keep in mind that after the second impact the population is severely lowered, almost a mini-apocalypse, so the world systems and order is very different and the government is pretty much in absolute control, so the general public's opinion doesn't really matter anyway. I also always assumed the world was fricked and weird after the second impact, with the ocean being red and shit like that, where smaller occurrences of supernatural threats would have come up that would warn of coming, bigger ones.

It's weird that Japanese government got both the JSDF (=military) and NERV ( a UN agency), and when the first(anyway) angel attacked, JSDF tried first then left it to UN.

Speaking of Japanese writing, I think this issue is satirized in other "high school festival" animes.
The drama club would write a play with grandious setting, like genius scientists, evil creation of humans etc. But kids just watch the show for the romance or highschool drama, and take those outlandish setting for granted, despite the stage drama never have the effects to present those ideas like anime and movies

You cherry pick one or two quotes and then proudly sit on Dunning Kruger's mount stupid proclaiming you know everything there is to know about a silly tv show. It's deeply ironic.
You can just as easily find quotes where Anno talks about using Christian imagery on purpose, to avoid association with new age Buddhist cults in Japan that just nerve gassed subways. Or where he goes into autistic detail about the distinction between "Neon Genesis" and "Shinseiki" 's meanings in the title.

Tldr, all life on earth comes from Lilith in the black moon that crashed in Japan, some ancient aliens shit to seed life. But that wasn't the only one for some reason.

By tampering with Adam in Antarctica where a second moon was located they activated a failsafe against a second creation event = Second Impact happens. (All there in the manual)

The show is about what happens afterwards, Seelee/Gehirn figure out how this shit works and want to highjack the process to remake humanity into something new and exciting. The Angels got spawned during Second Impact and are driven towards Lilith to finish the contingency and in the process destroy all life created by Lilith = everything on Earth.

      Anonymous

      >black moon that crashed in Japan

Lilith was seeded on another planet which collided with earth which was seeded with Adam, the resulting debris formed the moon that is why Rei is always on about it.

      Anonymous

What is the failsafe? Does it just undo a creation?

Does it simply flood the land, or does it change space and time and create a new universe, in which the original creatures live? or something?

      Anonymous

none of that makes sense, moons aren't eggs, creation event is a nonsensical term without a proper definition, much less would you expect anyone to grasp what a failsafe would be meant to do in these circumstances.

None of them are properly defined.
At first they said the "Creation event" in "guided evolution" version so we got dinosaur fossils.
But later when they introduced the "reboot", suddenly the creation event becomes conjuring an organism out of no where.

wait so the third impact and instrumentality are separate things?

      Anonymous

Yes. Instrumentality is the act of all Lilim (humans) forming into a single entity. The Third Impact was what happens when a Lilim encounters the Adam's Seed of Life (nuke that tries to kill all Lilim.)

      Anonymous

As far as we can tell
Third Impact = straight up death of all humans (offspring of Lilith)
Instrumentality = all humans returning to Lilith's egg (the black moon) and merging into a single consciousness

      Anonymous

Thid Impact is "Angels make contact with Lilith and shit's getting fricked bigly".

Instrumentality is "We can use the destructive forces released by Third Impact to advance human evolution and turn us into immortal goo-gods".

I'm not an Eva head, only saw it once, but how I understand it is

    >Second impact happens
    >Seele knows the truth behind it, realize they can use angels to achieve their cultish goal of merging every one, making "We are all one" more material and literal
    >Nerv is created by seele out of the military/defence contractors, turning cities into fortresses
    >Lilith is found, I guess, or they had Lilith the whole time
    >Seele wants to wake up Adam to bring about the third impact, but shinji's dad wants Adam to make a better rei clone (I think).
    >Picking Shinji's dad was part of seele's plan, better to use someone with his own motivations and reasons to do the same bidding than to explain to him your cooky elite religion.
    >Angels start showing up, seele and nerv knows they are prepared to fight them this time
    >It's beat down time
    >Karaowuwoow (gay guy) shows up, realizes humanity doesn't have Adam, thus humanity can't do something that the angels were afraid of
    >Seele steps in and fricks up nerv so Shinji's dad can't do what he would like to do with Lilith
    >Rei is painfully aware of her true purpose the whole show and is relieved at the end of eva bc she's finally doing it, she's finally destroying the world
    >Idk how exactly but seele enacts instrumentality, saving all of humanity's selves and memories
    >Shinji fricks this all up by separating humanity again with his choice, effectively erasing everyone else as humanity marches into the post apocalypse

    How wrong am I?

      Anonymous

      >Seele wants to wake up Adam to bring about the third impact, but shinji's dad wants Adam to make a better rei clone (I think).
Gendo thought Instrumentality was the only way he could be with Yui again, by making everyone one being with no one being separate.

      >Shinji fricks this all up by separating humanity again with his choice, effectively erasing everyone else as humanity marches into the post apocalypse

He's left with the choice of either leaving everyone merged as one or being able to bring everyone back. Initially he only brings Asuka back (whether he consciously did this or not isn't clear) but eventually he brings everyone back, leading to the Rebuild movies. No I don't care if people like them, they are canon.

        Anonymous

I haven't seen rebuild, didn't plan on watching them, but it takes place after eva? Do shinji and asuka frick and then thousands of generations later they re emerge?

          Anonymous

It takes place an undisclosed but presumably short time after End of Eva. Basically Shinji, who is in control of Instrumentality, brings everyone back to life but no one has any memories of what happened, and things repeat mostly the same as they did in the series. So the Third Impact of the show is the "Second Impact" of the Rebuilds, because they have no memory of there being a third.

            Anonymous

So do people start appearing out of thin air, and shinji and asuka just get amnesia?

We don't know exactly how it works, we just know they all came back and no one had any memories of what happened in the series. Except for Kawaru, who seems to understand what is happening to some degree.

Thank you all anons in this thread. you brought me enternainment and joy today.

Let m,e try to contribute without checking the wikis again, bc i am too lazy:

The "creators" send two kinds of seeds into the universe to populate it: seeds of wisdom and seeds of strengh. Fprmer ones with conciousness, latter one pure will.
For whatever failed reason, both land on earth and Lilith (Wisdom) became dominant. Millenia later, humans dug out the strengh seed including Adam activating it, googledogoo-ing everything up and instanciate a fail save program to take over Lithith by Adam. This program are the Angels.

Seele knows about this fromt he dead see scrolls and reveal as much so the UN is on board building EVAs to fight upcoming Angels. Originally, they wanted to build EVAs from Lillith, were EVA 01 comes into play and Gendo's wife got sucked in. The other EVAs are from Adam. Why? Dunno.

Seele doesn't want the third impcat not to happen, they want to use it to become gods over a goo of souls. No one is seperated any longer, all is one. The seperations are the AT field. EVAs have them, but humans too.

Gendo though just want him to be goo-ed together with his wife, period.

Neither Seele nor Gendo, not the Angels are successful. Latter ones mistook Lillith for Adam, didnt know Adams seed was in the Antartic and thought its the one in the geofront.

Lastly Seele was activating the third impact and instrumentality, but they didnt took Shinji into account, who in the end had the ultimate saying due to Rei liking him, with Rei being a clone of Shinji's mum.

Shinji chooses everyone to be human again - bang - now we are in the rebuild series.

BTW if have some issues with rebuild as well, but ultimately, it was a message of making peace and becoming mature. I really liked it. But one has to see the original series first.

You can also completely forget the background and just enjoy the ride.

is rebuild worth watching? I imagine it wont be as raw or animated as well as EVA because of modernization

        Anonymous

The animation is better in every way, and I'd argue the soundtrack is as well. I say it's worth watching at least the first two, which are more or less a condensed version of the series. Movies 3 and 4 is where it does a bit wacky but I still think they are good.

          Anonymous

          >the animation is better in every way
i highly doubt that, I grew up on 90s animes and I haven't seen anything animated better than those since then except for maybe the peak moments of a few animes like Naruto or Bleach. The cleaned up look of modern shit just doesn't look good, and the designs of the angels in the original run were alien and angelic in the truest sense of the words. Show me an angel design from rebuild that is as good as the first angel

That’s why watching anime is a waste of time: Whatever meaning you think you derive from it is just a delusion. The people making it are eternal 13 year olds who just put whatever shit they think “looks cool” on screen. No surprise then that 90% of anime ends up being robots punching each other, regardless of whatever seemingly intriguing premise they use to lure gaijins in.

it should be painfully obvious to you by now that any visual art form is going to care more about style than substance. Hell when has a music video had a decent plot? Manga artists are going to pick elements that make the best visuals, then do their best filling in on what the substance is. At least the Attack on Titan author did a good job of this unlike hacks like mystery box JJ Abrams.

Besides budget problem, the director had to decide whether to spend the movie screen time on his Shinji issue or on the alien conspiracy.

They have decided years ago that people can read the lore from the merch and devoted the movie on the Shinji issue.

Nadia was a great show. Eva lost that balance.

They never planned the story out in the beginning and just made shit up as they went along.
So it's just a big clusterfrick where some nothing throw-away line suddenly becomes crucial to the plot.

Nobody ever showed Shinji even a little fricking bit of love and concern and you expect him to be happy about getting packed into a sardine can to fight diamonds and circles, frickin all kinds of shapes?

    It works like this.

Ayy Lmaos send god like organisms designed to seed planets in giant "moon" ships equipped with fail safe devices known as "Spears of Longinus"
Two hit earth, Adam and Lilith. Each are designed to release an "Anti-AT field" which reduces organic life forms into primordial ooze.
To prevent an endless "lock up" loop of a god nuking all life on the planet every time it encountered the others "children" the Spears would automatically incapacitate one of them.

Lilith's spear was destroyed in its collision, causing Adam's spear to shut him down. Lilith-based life took over.
Humans experimenting with Adam accidentally caused it to produce a weak anti-AT field which caused a massive hit to all life on earth (second impact).

Adam and Lilith are designed with two separate philosophies for the life they create.
Lilith creates life as we understand it on earth, driven by natural selection. Adam instead produces self sustaining super organisms (angels) that have no need to reproduce to adapt.

With Lilith and Adam both active on earth, the two descending forms of life were at odds. The Angels wanted to reclaim Adam to prevent an instrumentality event. Seele's goal was to basically cause instrumentality but then lock it at a certain phase so life would become a singularity.

The angels have no interest in Lilith, them touching Lilith would cause an anti-AT field event just as humans touching Adam did, hence Kawuro basically giving up.

If humanity handed over Adam would the angels have just fricked off to another planet or something? They don't seem like the bad guys in this situation.

The angels seemed to want to eliminate humans. Even the most sympathetic of them seemed to have no free will to not go with the plan.
