The opening text states that the film is supposed to have been released in 1995, yet does not capture that era of film at all. If they wanted to go for that the film's colour pallet would have been tan and blue/silver. There would be no lesbian subplot. Buzz's best friend would definitely be black, but probably have been a guy, the grand kid would have been a chick and would have been in love, or at least had a crush on Buzz and they would have had one kiss at the end. Or it would have been more like Buzz acting as a father figure. Mo and Darby would have been one character, and played by Rob Schneider.

The 90s truly were the last great decade for western civilisation. 9/11 kinda screwed everything up globally because the US went nuts, dragged the rest of the world into their bullshit, and now we live in an age defined by paranoia and hopelessness. At least least in the 90s that grunge-era apathy was balanced by the desire to improve things. Now everyone just wants to wallow in their despair.

9/11 was absolutely an inside job. 9/11 was specifically to make money in the war industry, securities industry, private prison industry, lobbyists, the fascist Likud party, and hundreds of other organizations. the capitalists needed it because the cold war was over and if people started realizing what marxism actually is, the wars would stop. peace is bad for business

I'll actually respect the gay pandering once they have the balls to do it with gay men.
Disney has lesbians kiss in Star Wars and Lightyear (which are shot in a way that can easily be edited out) because that's socially acceptable and seen as "hot", but all gay men get is talking about being gay in vague way like that dude from the begining of Endgame (of course which will also be edited out in overseas showings)

Don't, it's not even bad, it's just mediocre. I didn't even have a problem with the lesbian subplot because it's so unimportant to the plot that I barely remember anything about it other than it exists. I genuinely can't remember if there was even a kiss or not. What annoyed me more was that the plot felt like it was being needlessly padded out, entirely by Taika Watiti's character being a bumbling moron.

I get that they were trying to have the characters face challenges along the way, but having him be just a bumbling idiot that constantly waylaid them was infuriating. That whole scene where they were getting the capacitor and he gets them trapped in the security cones, and then the building starts collapsing was completely pointless. And they thought having his suit have a pen was a big character arc? A better plan would have been to have the robot he hit with a harpoon actually do something, like instead of security cones they realise the robot followed them into the building and they had to keep it from getting in while Mo disassembled the console because he knew what he was looking for. So his whole thing is that he's a terrible shot, but really good with tech stuff.
They really needed work on the support characters, because they were all basically the same with surface level differences.
It should have been, Izzy - extremely self-conscious because she's a Hawthorne and keeps relying on other people to fix the problems she encounters because she doesn't think she can do anything (making her a good mirror for Buzz who is over-confident and keeps going it alone).
Mo - Completely inept when it comes to anything combat and was there waiting to wash out, but discovers he is really good with tech and tactics.
Darby - They were the only good support character besides Sox, but they should have gone further with it, like they are truly obsessed with weapons and have an encyclopedic knowledge of Star Command's arsenal, but maybe put in something like the weapons all have fingerprint recognition and so Darby isn't actually allowed to use any of the weapons as part of the parole, so they keep having to get other characters to use them. Which would make for a good dynamic between Darby and Mo, one isn't allowed to use the guns, and the other is a terrible shot, but they work together to improve.
