So were they actually looking for someone to shoot the little girl, were they satisfied with J's explanation, or was it simply comedy?

The point was his scores didn't matter, K was vouching for him.

This, it was to show Kay was the top agent and had a lot of pull.

        So the tests were meaningless?

More or less. It's a parody of the interview process.

Yes they wanted you to shoot little Tiffany. Their whole organization is about normalizing being around aliens and to look deeper than that to find your targets.

They wanted out of the box thinkers, "detectives", not necessarily soldiers. It was kind of contrived though still, J wouldn't have shot the little girl off of those slight suspicions alone.

This. It was the same thing with the pencil and paper test, when J was the one who said “frick it” and improvised by dragging the table.

      This, pretty much.

All the other soldiers were just following orders, while he actually had an original thought. The point wasn't to give the 'right' answer, it was to give an answer that a person might give as opposed to a 'dumb panicky animal'.

well it was made in 1997 so we'd probably consider it pretty racist now

I think it was also a joke about how a black cop would be the only one who wouldn’t just automatically see “others” as threats based on their appearance.

Yes. These people already proved their worth in physical talents like marksmanship because they're the best of the best of the best.

The point of the test was not to shoot at any of the targets. None of the targets were an immediate danger that justified the use of deadly force. The little girl was suspicious, but being suspicious doesn't justify the use of deadly force.

All of the applicants failed, while J came the closest to passing and gave correct responses for why he didn't shoot the monsters, but he panicked at the last moment and felt he had to fire a shot because he saw everyone else shooting so he still failed. J became accepted by MIB because K vouched for him after seeing him chase down a Cephalapoid on foot.

No, he realized everything is not what it seems since before the first test and his patience was running thin. He shot the girl target for lulz.
