Movies have had high budgets for literally 100 years and only in the past decade have they decided they never want to take a risk ever again and just churn out absolute mediocrity or outright unwatchable garbage instead. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was a huge gamble and it worked out. You can go throughout the history of Hollywood and find risky projects that turned into long lasting classics. Not anymore though. This will be forgotten like all the rest, but Peter Jackson's version will live on.
