So, what does The Marvels failure mean for James Gun's DC? You think they will scale it back a lot, or even just cancel it? No way the exec's are looking at these numbers and staying calm.
I don't even think this failure has as much to do with politics as you guys think it is. I assume it's more just superheroes being played out, and people getting bored.
James Gunn is done
Peacemaker was a flop as was The Suicide Squad
all his project, The Flash, Blue Beetle, were flops as well
He's done. Zack Snyder is gonna come back and finish Justice League. Two billies incoming.
I liked Peacemaker tho.
all is great until snyder part. Capeshit is over.
despite me wanting the gunnverse to die before it's even born, flash and blue beetle were not made under his discretion, those were the last remnants of the snyderverse and were promptly stolen by gunn.
this, the only possible chance the gunnverse has of succeeding is that he is at least producing everything and will have a say in how connected or standalone it can be. of course most people are sick of the needing to watch movies and tv shows to get the whole picture, so if gunn is smart he'll keep them separate, aka it will crash and burn after superman and we'll all just be waiting to see batman 2 and joker 2 anyway.
I think the end result will still be the same. His DCU has no chance of being successful, regardless of what marvel is doing. It was never about what marvel was doing. WB never understood that. If they left it alone and let it be it's own thing, the DCEU could have been somewhat successful. Course correcting 5 times in 7 years was legit stupid and should go down as an example of executive meddling having a net negative with every single decision made.
If they pull out another Joker (2019) and The Batman(2022) every few years. They're gonna be fine.
Honestly, yeah. Double down on that shit.
Those films only stemmed the bloodloss though. The DCEU post 2019 has lost them in the region of $700m. They didn't even make the lion's share from Joker because they refused to cover the production. And the Batman didn't make THAT much money.
This.
The insecurity plaguing the higher-ups is what killed the dceu.
The dcu is fucked because Gunn is an idiot. The marvels' success or lack thereof makes no difference. If dc were doing prepared to actually make kino, marvel pissing and shitting about wouldn't affect that as we see with The Batman and Joker.
My man
>Course correcting 5 times in 7 years was legit stupid and should go down as an example of executive meddling having a net negative with every single decision made
All these idiots on YouTube that do essays on the stupidest shit and no one has given me a kino 60 minute breakdown of every reactive decision that buried the DC brand for like 7 years.
The market has been over saturated with superhero movies and shows for over a decade. It's about time they scale back. It's become the McDonald's of Hollywood. They've gone for quantity of quality.
Gunn has no chance, he's being sent out to die
They have no other good ideas to replace them with so they can't stop making capeslop
I know it's bound to fail; I'll just be surprised if the studio even allows it too. I can fully see them canceling the universe aspect and just okaying a batman or superman movie here and there.
Which is really what needs to happen.
They've paid so much for the licences they just can't bring themselves to do it though.
The hell are you talking about? WB owns DC.
the only marvel movie coming out in 2024 is deadpool, which will do okay.
if the black capitan america bombs, and the next dc movies bomb, then cape shit truly is dead
He is in a better position than Marvel is at this point.
Actually doing the intelligent thing and rebooting a franchise that wasn't working.
Shitsney is doubling and tripling down on their failing direction and will continue to lose money.
The consumer has already accepted that what Shitsney is putting out will be trash and have continued to reject it.
Gunn has a positive track record with what he has put out, so doing a new direction with DC has a better advantage if he is able to follow through.
Personally after seeing all the woke trash that is involved with his new universe I think it will fail, but the fact that they are starting from scratch gives them better odds in the eyes of a normie that has no idea what the fuck is going on culturally.
>Actually doing the intelligent thing and rebooting a franchise
He's not though. It's a half assed reboot where he gets to bring friends.
I agree, it is half ass, but it's doing something new, which Shitsney/Marvel is not doing.
>doing something new
>anounces 10 movies, before making a good one.
lmao. I seen this one before.
>wasn't working
It was working just fine until they interfered with Snyder's vision and started chasing the WOKE dollar.
its over
people now want something different
anime is where its at right now
preferably asian movies/tv shows as well
You’re talking out of your ass, dude. You’ll likely get something along the lines of LA One Piece than the average person watching anime.
It was like a game of billion dollar hot potato and Gunn was left holding it.
what the flying fuck does it have to do with anything DC?
Some of the movies Gunn announced might have woke stories especially the Authority.
so absolutely nothing, got it
Are you retarded?
when im in charge of dc movies, my first slate would be the following
team 7 - think apocalypse now/a thin red line/platoon
wildcats - think alien franchise
batman/simon dark crossover - they travel into the underworld in search of a missing superman
wetworks - which coincides with team 7
green lantern - hal jordan, along with other lanerns, are tracking the whereabouts of a missing superman in space
these guys in the jungles of cambodia fighting unknown entities - think predator
they fought vampires anon
saying vampires makes it gay
unknown entities is much better
>saying vampires makes it gay
y
vampires wouldnt work in the arc of the story
its gotta be different
the underworld has been open, entities are coming through - wetworks have been dispatched to cambodia to take care of man-eating creatures
>vampires wouldnt work in the arc of the story
y not
>underworld
y
you think im gonna tell YOU, you fucko HACK
when im in charge, ill have you FIRED
t rad
I would direct them all better than u anyways
superman has been killed
his remains scattered across the cosmos AND the underworld
batman and simon dark travel into he underworld in the hopes of finding rementants of superman there - they find his rementants BUT it has transformed into something else, something different, something deadly...
think, the cell directed by Tarsem Singh
Are Snyerfags gonna mass suicide when his Superman makes a billy?
Superman isn't a popular character.
If Gunn's Superman Legacy flops, his DCU is over. WB dropped Singer's Superman Returns trilogy after the first movie failed.
They should just put the DCU on hiatus until Paramount inevitably buys them.
His GotG 3 was the only Disney Marvel film that made any money this year. Will have to see if he can get eyes on his DC projects when people are getting tired of capeshit
The market is just oversaturated and people got bored with all the product out there. The comic book industry plateaued around 2017 and then started dropping and collapsed during the pandemic. They shit on fans so much that even comic book readers had enough. Studio executives should have used the comic book industry as the canary in the coal mine and should have known better.
He’s fucked. No way his Superman movie will make even MOS profits. Even if it’s good. Superhero fatigue is a reality. Nobody wants another Superman reboot. Superman not very popular anymore. People still annoyed they never got MOS 2. DC brand is ruined. Nobody trusts it. All these things are stacked against him
Batman and Spider-Man will always sell. X-Men would always sell as long as you have Wolverine in it, preferably as the star.
Sony going to ruin Spider Man. Already happening. Because they had put out something SM every four years or Marvel gets the rights. Holland is least popular SM. Last one only did good because of Maguire. Eventually have a new SM be 5th counting Miles in 20 years
MCU Spidey made a billion each, dude. The whole trilogy was successful.
>Holland is least popular SM. Last one only did good
Then why did Homecoming reverse the downward trend of Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Far From Home become the first Spider-Man film ever to cross a billion dollars?
>and Far From Home become the first Spider-Man film ever to cross a billion dollars?
Because inflation. The Raimi films would have all been billion dollar films in today's money
>Superhero fatigue is a realit
Then why did GOTG3 and Spider-Verse 2 do well this year?
Spider verse did worse than every live action Spider-Man. Miles isn't anywhere near as popular as you think he is
And yet, it grew hugely from the first film.
The first film got raped by Aquaman
Why did you just completely blank my statement?
And do you believe that Aquaman 2 is going to increase from Aquaman 1, the way Spider-Verse 2 increased from Spider-Verse 1 (almost double its predecessor's gross)?
Spider Man is most popular Superhero. Not even debatable. GOTG did below expectations. But did well because people knew it was probably last time we’ll see them again. Saldana is definitely never coming back
Excuses excuses. How much did "the last time we'll see them" help Indy?
Crystal Skull sucked. Harris Ford is hundred years old. People don’t trust Lucas Film anymore to point even South Park is mocking it
Homecoming made 880 million. With Downey Jr selling. Far From Home had Infinity War coming up to sell it. And then finally, last one had Maguire. I’ll be real interested in seeing what 4th Holland one does. With Downey Jr, Infinity War or nostalgia to sell it
>Far From Home had Infinity War coming up to sell it.
That's impressive given it came out 14 months after Infinity War.
The endless excuses are hilarious.
The only hope for DC and Marvel movies is to cast Asian (not Asian-American) actors and make films centered around Asian characters. Anime is much more popular than comic books and so it shows that the market prefers Asians.
That they should just not do it. I'm in the minority's here and I trust Gunn but nobody is going to give these characters a chance. DC and WB have missed the boat
People gave The Batman a chance.
Batman is a brand in itself
More people at The Holdovers than The Marvels at my theater on Saturday night (Chicago suburbs).
What would you do if you were put in control of dc's film output?
Me?
>scrap the dcu altogether
>focus on The Batman and its world
>make sure Penguin is kino
>fast track the sequel
>push for a Batgirl movie with Pattinson reprising his role as Batman in it
>make the third film of the Batman trilogy introduce Robin, with Batgirl in it as a supporting character
>throw in a grittier Harley Quinn and Joker film, see if Pattinson will come back - if not, put a stuntman in the Batman suit since he'd only be a background character anyway
>end the initial arc with a loose adaptation of the killing joke
>simultaneously try some low budget Superman ideas, see if any of them stick
>build a new dcu off the back of whichever Superman concept you can make work
>accept that the golden age of capeshit has passed and focus on tight stories with cool action scenes instead of constantly going for doomsday end of the world cgi armies stories
>ten years down the line, talk to Snyder about adapting his ideas for Justice League 2 as an animated film (ai might even make it possible to look live action for relatively cheap)
as batman and simon dark venture into the underworld, nightwing goes on a deadly mission of his own - think the raid - i originally planned this for a batman film, but i feel a nightwing solo film is long overdue
>nightwing goes on a deadly mission of his own - think the raid
They made that movie. It was called Dredd
yeah, and now nightwing gets his version of the raid, which is just an updated version of bruce lee;s game of death
Why are people talking about Marvel's failures when DC's RECENT failures were even worse? These movies were all produced by the current co-CEO and James Gunn's buddy, Peter Safran. Some of these movies were even meddled in post-production by Gunn in an attempt to market them better.
Hell, the screen-writers and directors responsible for these failures were all hired to write/direct the new movies. The director of THE FLASH, that was a huge bomb, was hired to reboot Batman a second time.
>Why are people talking about Marvel's failures when DC's RECENT failures were even worse?
Because the Marvel's made less than Flash and Shazam 2 and Blue Beetle cost half as much to make. Aquaman 2 will also make more than the Marvel's
>The director of THE FLASH, that was a huge bomb, was hired to reboot Batman a second time.
I don't think the director of the Flash did a bad job all things considered. Flash was tanked by Ezra and some lackluster CGI
The CGI is a responsibility of the director.
Also, Christina Hudson, the screenwriter behind Birds of Prey and The Flash is one of the hand-picked "architect" for the new universe. The bitch is writing half of the movies and shows planned.
>The Flash
The film that had eighty different versions under six directors?
Ezra’s performance was great in Flash. His reputation was tanked by media bullshit and Twitter hypocrites and Warner thinking they were above basic PR establishing their lead actor didn’t actually kidnap anyone
Not memeing or trolling.
I think capeshit is done, The Marvels is not a great film but it doesn't matter, Endgame was a logical conclusion and the public just doesn't care anymore. DC CU will fail not because its good or bad but because the train has left the station.
You cannot recapture the shared universe excitement anymore. I think you are correct.
Disney saturated market with Marvel Disney+ shows that are all shit and even biggest MCU shrill had enough. MCU no longer an event, which what you have to create to get asses into theaters these days
This. There will always be Batman and Superman movies but the cinematic universe shit is over
Frankly i say good. The movies were always held back by being in that stupid cinematic universe. I want good Batman movies but i dont care about the cinematic universe shit.
>I want good Batman movies but i dont care about the cinematic universe shit.
Yes, we've never had a Batman film that wasn't in a "cinematic universe" before, of course.
Spider-Man No Way Home did nearly 2 billion dollars WITHOUT a Chinese release two years after Endgame and after COVID wrecked theaters.
DC should stick to solo movies of their famous characters and that's it
The fatigue extends from the movies to the comic shops. I work part-time at one while I'm at college and traffic has only slowed down since I started. And the new generation doesn't care about comics. Zoomers just come in for Funkos and don't even look at comics or manga.
Since the '80s, Diamond has been distributing all comics to retailers. The market has shrunk so much that in the past few years Marvel, DC and Image have left Diamond to do their own distro thing. People are downplaying it, but comics might see a collapse similar to the '90s. My boss is old so he'll probably sell everything and retire if that happens again. It's not just movies, all comic related business might see a huge contraction soon.
https://www.comicsbeat.com/with-image-gone-what-is-diamonds-future/
Aren't comics $4.99 an issue now? It's only a matter of time until the bottom falls out. That's not sustainable these days. You could get the Shonen Jump app and read the entirety of the big 3 for less than $5 a month
Manga is doing well, very well actually. As for comics, universes ruined western comics. I remembered being like 13 and wanting to get into them, walking in a comic store and seeing the 50 versions of spidermand and wolverine, it was overwhelming and it was also stupid. I just wanted a story. Manga does well because you can actually follow the plotline instead of this stupid universe thing. Also manga is way more varied, you can find almost any subject for manga, in comics its only superhero stuff.
To you, my friend, I would recommend Image Comics titles. Most stories run like 6 issues and the most popular ones like Saga never reach 100 issues and they are all collected in trade paperbacks. And NO interconnected universes. Image is also creator owned, so for each issue Image only takes like $3,000 for printing and admin and the rest goes to the creator. So for Walking Dead, Image only got $3000 per issue and Kirkman kept the rest and all merchandising rights. I think they only split profits in the trades. Image is a great company for creatives. As for Manga, I think it depends on the area. Kids that come to the store don't look at it here. I'm guessing they just get that online.
Thanks anon, i heard of them before. Ill look into it more. I do have to day tho that i think it might be too little too kate for western comics. Manga ate their lunch
What the fuck has The Marvels got to do with Gunn's DCU?
Whoever keeps making these James Gunn threads with his face as the OP has the biggest fag crush on him, almost worse than the Gadon poster
