In an area like Baltimore, being a longshoreman isn't a bad job. Mix of consistency, low education requirements and dedicated union men like Sobatka make it pretty good all things considered. With their experience most of those guys would be lucky to be on a crew patching up the beltway for less money if they'd lost their jobs then and there.
I find the scenes of Kima's girlfriend to be pretty annoying to watch for the most part (something about that character/actress is very grating), but I basically agree with you.
