True crime is great when they follow the facts. It turns to shit when they can't prove anything and they have family members and police officers saying "We know what they did, we know, we can't prove it but somehow...we know!" for a full fricking hour
Some of the stories are fascinating and a few documentaries occasionally get the tone just right: the "What Happened to Josh?" ep from netflix's Unsolved Mysteries reboot for instance gets everything right: the unfolding story with new layers added at the end, the sense of place, the interesting characters etc. There's a Twin Peaks ambiguity to it
I suffer from having to live with my girlfriend's parents, and her mom is autistically obsessed with this shit. All that's ever on in the living room is the fricking news, cop shows like NCIS, true crime shit, and game shows. the house is decorated with a mixture of generic Live Laugh Love garbage while her bookshelves consist entirely of baby shit, Harry Potter, murderporn fiction, and Jack the Ripper larping. She is also the most manipulative, vitriolic, annoying, double-standard having, manhating, karen-tier seething, pro-establishment, anti-wrongthink, flouridated, verbally abuse b***h I've met, and I grew up getting beaten by drunks. She's one brain cell away from strangling her husband to death, and all my gf's siblings save for one are adults and just fricking sit around watching v-tubers and playing minecraft. I don't know how we even manage to survive on next-to-no income like this. I hate it here, and want to move states away (preferably a full continent) just to keep her out of my gf's life
Because I moved across the country coming from nothing. I would rather that than mooch off friends of equal poverty or being someone's loser homeless boyfriend. I'm constantly working towards moving with her, and we're pretty close, but life gets in the way. hospital bills, groceries, etc

Can't handle docs that go into detail about how a 5 year old was tortured for a year and was dismembered or whatever. It puts me in a bad mood and I don't think women should be eating that shit up.

this. ive never met a female who is watching true crime shows about white-collar stuff like Enron or Wirecard. they dont even watch stuff about people like john wayne gacy because he was fat and killed dudes.
The only time true crime has interested me was when I learned about Dahmer sometime in the early 2000's. Serial killers don't interest me; even the "clever" ones like Ted Bundy or John Wayne Gacy can easily just be dismissed as being high-functioning psychopaths who had something born wrong in their brain but they KNEW how to hide it.
Dahmer is just a bizarre recipe wrapped up in a mystery that psychologists can't seem to figure out. He was a fricking loser his whole life, he's an extreme introvert, he acted like a total spaz in high school, he rarely excelled in any academics, he could barely function on a day-to-day basis because of his alcoholism. Yet, he got away with just as much shit as all the other "clever serial killers" just because he put all his stat points into luck or some shit.
Dahmer doesn't feel real, he feels like a fictional person from the mind of a horror author.
The more straightforward, monotone, detail-oriented schizo fest ramblings that last for an hour or more are great. When it's two chicks giggling while talking about rape and murder it's not only embarrassing, it's obscene.
Some cases are kino with batshit insane twists. Most of them are a boring blur though.
