A major plotpoint in Sonic Adventure 2 and Shadow the Hedgehog (the game) is that Shadow was friends with Dr Eggman's younger cousin and she got shot during a military raid on a space station they live on.
This movie is supposedly adapting Sonic Adventure 2.
Shadow... had a hard life.
A lot of Shadow's lyrics had to do with how conflicted he feels. Even in his theme, "Throw It All Away", it comments on how, even if he is immortal, it doesn't matter and he would rather throw it all away because the life itself is meaningless.
In Rhythm and Balance, the White Jungle stage where you have to save Rouge before the island explodes, the song asks over and over if Shadow is scared, once again that if he fails, he will lose yet another person close to him.
In the Supernatural, Final Chase's stage, the song starts asking if Shadow is even the Ultimate Lifeform to begin with as he gets closer to Maria's "dream."
The Biolizard of course, is unironically what I'd call Shadow's swan song. "Supporting Me" sounds just like the title, Shadow has finally given up revenge and learned that he wants to protect the world but he doesn't really know how to do this. He will do everything in his power, knowing that Maria is supporting him in order to fulfill her last wish, even if it means his untimely end, which the song references at the end of the song as well.
And of course, Live and Learn. Pretty explanatory, but it's learning to live with your mistakes and to keep moving in life even if all seems lost.
Shadow's story was unironically a great lead up from a broken individual lead on by hatred to one of redemption, giving his life to the ones he tried to destroy in the first place. We really won't have kino like this again, but at least its here.

It's worth playing if you really like Sonic Adventure 2. It's not great, it's very janky with shitty controls and a few frustrating levels. I actually enjoy it but it's not for everyone, you've gotta handle the jank and find entertainment in the fact you're playing an edgy Sonic game where you drive cars and shoot people.
One thing that is cool is that you can do different objectives in the levels to go down different routes. There's "light" levels and "dark" levels.
Shiro Maekawa, the guy who wrote it, no doubt grew up with a lot of manga and anime that had sad and tragic deaths in it. He wanted to put some of that in the story he wrote. SA2 was a rather bittersweet story

And it wasn't the sudden "my granddaughter is dead so now I am evil" kind of switch; it was a slow and steady descent into madness, the "oh god I shouldn't be doing this, but I want to burn the world so bad, but I can't control myself, but I just hate everything, someone please stop me" kind of descent that eventually eased him into not caring about anything but revenge anymore.
Plus he revealed his plans through a pre-recorded "death sentence" to the world he made moments before his execution.

On another note, Maria is Dr. Eggman's cousin. He was a kid when she was killed and he barely even knew her, but the fact that his own family overlooked him while singing praises about her fed into his inferiority complex. I wonder if that will play into Eggman's role in the movie, since we know Carrey's Eggman grew up alone and neglected.

If you think that's dark, look for the Japanese version. The actor's shift from "I'm losing my mind, someone help me" to "Frick the world" is chilling. Plus it was the same actor as Eggman himself.

All of the lost tracks are great, I heard Sega pulled them becuase they couldn't get in touch with that band at the last minute. Shame, since post-rock was at an all time high during 2005. Gaylo had Breaking Benjamin and Burnout 3 had MCR.

The game was lightning in a bottle, imo. I was nine when SA2 came out and played it every single day.
Music is fire and all the characters are cool. I was honestly coming off of Mario games at the time and wasn't expecting what I got.

Shit like Maria getting gunned down is the reason why I always preferred Sonic to Mario. The Mario franchise for the most part bland. The games are good, but they feel so calculated. Like Nintendo is doing everything they could to make the most safe branded game for Mario. Meanwhile, Sega heads are doing a mountain of coke and thinking of the most moronic idea for a Sonic and for better or worse, they commit to it. Mario games are objectively better, but I'd rather play SA2 over any Mario game any day of the week.

Sonic Adventure 1 coming after 2 can make sense, considering "space alien water god who lives in the Chaos Emeralds flooding the city" is potentially higher stakes than "Eggman and evil Sonic shoot the moon."

I truly wished we lived in a timeline where Shadow wasn't tossed aside and we kept getting a Shadow line of games/music/tv that explored a darker side of the Sonic universe. He could have been the rated M hedgehog for more adult fans to grow into.
Adult fans at that time hated this direction saying "this isn't sonic" and it was half the reason Sega went back to playing it safe forever. It didn't help that the games were jank either, Sonic is somewhat coming back around to this style with Frontiers, or so I've heard. I haven't played it or any Sonic since Sonic 06.

They've been rewarded twice for pandering to the fans, first by delaying and spending extra to revamp Ugly Sonic, then by going pretty much all out on a CG Sonic 2/3 adaptation with just live action Robotnik (people complain about the wedding subplot, but all the non-Robotnik humans were sequestered off in this comedy subplot while it was all Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Robotnik in the main plot, that's a good tradeoff).
So no surprises they're going even harder into just adapting Sonic directly, with SA2 now. I hope now that they're past the music rights minefield that is Sonic 1, 2 and 3, that they might get more of the music in the film. They slipped in a little here and there (I heard notes from the drowning music subtly on the score when Sonic was....drowning) but other than Green Hill Zone in the first film they haven't been able to use the music properly. But there should be zero problems getting Live & Learn in there for the climax.

Sonic Adventures 1 and 2 are basically where the bulk of the Internet's raving Sonic autists came from for a long time. When they came out they created such weird tonal whiplash within the series because they took themselves so seriously. On one hand, they were so unabashedly moronic that I really respected what they were doing; on the other, Sonic basically became an edgy fighting anime with colorful animals so a bunch of DeviantArt autists were inspired to insert their OCs into it.
The interesting thing is, with SA1 especially, they backload a lot of the edge to the end of the game, and most of it is cartoon antics of Sonic and Robotnik fighting over the Emeralds.
Yeah SA1 kind of eased into it. You could sorta tell it was getting up its own ass once Tikal showed up though.
The games are jank but I think they're worth playing if only because the Saturn/Dreamcast era of SEGA is the best and its games reflect late 90s/early 00s so viscerally.
Incidentally I fell off Sonic after Sonic 1-3&Knuckles so I never saw any of this shit.

My knowledge of Sonic Adventure 1 comes from the loose adaptation the British Sonic the Comic did of it, since I never owned a Dreamcast and by the time it was ported to Gamecube I was past Sonic. And I'm quite certain it was very loose indeed because Chaos is 100% evil in the comic version and has an origin specific to that comics' version of Sonic story stuff which would take a bunch of background stuff to explain and it wouldn't mean anything to anyone since I'm the only kid who read those comics instead of the Archie ones, Since I never played the game I'm not sure what its origin is there but I'm pretty sure it's not an evil entity in the game.
In the game Chaos is a mutated chao that was the guardian of the Master Emerald. Knuckles’ tribe tried to steal the emeralds for their power, trampling the chao in the process, so Chaos got mad and destroyed them. Then Tikal sealed him inside the ME until Robotnik breaks it open. Chaos in the games is effectively a neutral rampaging monster until Sonic defeats it and calms it down.
Well he is mutated, but chao don't even exist in the comic so yeah. In the comic Chaos is introduced as some kind of near unstoppable monster connected to the Chaos Emeralds Robotnik had contained in a secret lab, until it's let out unwittingly by his underling who thought it could be controlled (at this late stage Robotnik has descended into defeated nihilism and just laughs at this because it's probably going to destroy the whole world once it obtains all the Emeralds and becomes Perfect Chaos).
Time for the background dump. In the comics one of Sonic's recurring enemies are the Drakon, which are evil alien sentient fish that pilot humanoid mech suits (naturally revealed in a panel where Sonic beheads one only to find that's the entire creature), and have an interstellar empire.
Back to the present, briefly, after Chaos kills one of the main Sonic gang (not one from the games, he was a rabbit guy), Sonic winds up being thrown back in time to the echidna empire on Mobius (not Earth, there's a whole other arc of Sonic getting stranded on Earth and it's regular ass Earth), in this one the echidnas like Tikal are the guardians of the Chaos Emeralds, including Knuckles who turns out to be like 5000 years old but with no memory of this since he was in stasis while the echidnas were at war with the Drakon, who wanted the Emeralds. Sonic subdues a Drakon lieutenant and he's interrogated by the echidnas out of his mech suit. Shenanigans with the Drakon attack, etc etc, end up fricking the Chaos Emeralds up and they wind up blowing up half the capital palace, with said Drakon at ground zero. Cue cliffhanger panel of Sonic looking to see the Drakon has been transformed into Chaos. Sonic is thrown back to the present soon after and the story continues from there but it's implied Knuckles being in stasis til the present day makes him the only surviving echidna after the war.
It's weird how I remember all this, I read those comics when I was like 9.
Oh yeah and in their first fight exposure to Chaos inexplicably turns Sonic's eyes permanently green, like they were now being depicted in the SEGA games, instead of black like in the Megadrive art. Weird bit of brand alignment.
Holy shit, kek. I'd only read some really old issues and then like a handful of the Sonic Adventure adaptation back when I was still pretty young so I had no idea about most of this. Still, arguably more entertaining than Archie's "who is Sonic gonna frick???" plotlines. Chaos' design in the Fleetway comic was cool.
I think my favorite arc from it as a kid was everything leading up to the 100th issue, which wound up being a big climactic status quo upheaval where all the normally separate comics strips in the issue crossed over, which I hadn't seen before, I would explain it to justify my recalled childhood hype, but I'd have to elaborate on the Special Zone and Super Sonic and Robotnik's setup and the Floating Island and they'd all take their own posts to do them justice. I mean it's all probably incredibly simplistic and for kids if I went back and read them now, but in my memory it was a very compelling story with revolution and cataclysm stuff, I didn't really read superhero comics so this was all I saw of those kinds of stories. It's just fun to indulge in some nostalgia.
Oh yeah he's just straight up evil (until he isn't...ish, that's another long story) and just destroys everything any time he appeared.
Also just from seeing images on google, I do miss that 1990s inking, the colors pop.
the main thing I remember from the British comic is Sonic is hilariously unpleasant. Like he's the hero saving the day ultimately but he's unbelievably arrogant and abrasive in the process. So it's funny that he's usually a nice guy in other Sonic properties, self assured and wienery yes but never a prick

It had a good Knuckles too, he was not remotely dumb like apparently the games leaned into later on, he was just very serious and stoic.
I don't remember it very well, but yeah the British comic version of SA1 is super loose. In the games he's just an entity that protected the Chaos Emeralds and a race of little people that was mad because it got attacked and sealed by Knuckles' ancestors because they wanted the emeralds. If I remember right, Chaos is related to the echidnas in some way in the comic but it's just an evil dude who mutated or whatever? Much later in the games it's revealed that Chaos is actually a member of a race of highly-sophisticated aliens who crash-landed on Earth and had used the Chaos Emeralds as engine fuel.
Yeah, old fans hated this era. You would have never seen an SA2 movie 15 years ago. Classicfans used to be the people Sega listened to for a while but now alot of people who grew up with this era are now grown adults. I'm curious to see the tone this movie will have, you can't please both groups with this movie.

I don't know; I think amongst the hardcore fans most people warmed up to Sonic Adventure fairly quickly, and most of the hardcore classicgays are either very casual fans or zoomers. I posted a lot on autistic Sonic forums and it took much less time than a full generation for people to warm up to Shadow.
Just wait until you learn about the ancient echidna propehcy heiroglyphs that inspired Gerald to create Shadow and how SA2 is in fact the culmination of a background plot that had been brewing for a decade's worth of games.
Then there's also shit like Sonic's relation to Chaos and how that ties into him being the ultimate life form and Shadow really being the faker.
There are people who: A) didn't recognize this when they played the games and B) still don't believe it.

Some of it is, but the game itself does clearly show Gerald studied the Emeralds and Chaos considering there are Maya glyphs and Echidna ruins all in the ARK's core and there are artificial Chaos enemies; and Shadow does have a line in the Final Hazard fight if you take long enough where he says "Now I realize it, the real ultimate lifeform is you, Sonic", which ties into a report Rogue gives in a JP guidebook which implies there might have been multiple shadows, which Heroes/StG is also clearly drawing from in their plots.
