Shard's fate was up in the air after issue 50 according to the Bumblecast, though the reboot made it a moot point.

Because Metal Sonic is boring. Dedede or Bowser have great personalities. Eggman too, nobody cares when they lose all the time because they are fun even when losing.
Metal has nothing going for him other than his menacing design, and he’s not menacing when he eats shit in every appearance. He’s a generic mute that could be replaced with literally any other Eggman robot and not change the story at all. Orbot and Cubot bring more to a Sonic story than Metal does.

Sonic Heroes suggested that Metal is envious of Sonic, to the point that it briefly turned into a full-blown identity crisis. Sega could've done more with that, but they didn't.

I think it comes down to publisher copyrights as well. All the legacy characters that aren’t SoJ owned like the SatAM cast, the reimagined AOSTH characters post-genesis and original ones were probably registered primarily via Archie comics, and even if it’s the same team working on IDW, I don’t think their former employers will be too eager to relinquish more control, and SoJ doesn’t care either way to put in the resources to scoop those characters back up.

Not a Britbong. I just think Metallix is easier to type than Metal Sonic. Plus it's a name that refers to that specific character rather than any of the other Sonic robots that got a "Metal Sonic" moniker, which includes Shard.

I think Sonic 06 started the trend of Eggman using general robots and only piloting one specifically for the final boss. It's not a hard rule (Unleashed had one boss fight prior, Unwiished had him piloting the other Day bosses while it's two robots in the HD versions, He fights Classic Sonic in Forces), but it's either for variety's sake or to give him being a final boss more weight (despite the classic games already accomplishing that).

Ian writes him as a really hands-off villain ever since the Archie reboot. It was supposed to allow the Eggbosses time to shine but it’s carried over to IDW because Ian treats this series as a continuation of Archie despite this type of storytelling not being a good fit for the setting.
