It is when you deploy drones. Ravage was more of a menace than half the full on Decepticons

This. There were a couple of times where Ravage was kicking Optimus Prime's ass.

I'm not crazy about ES' designs, but SW' alt-mode is the part they got right.

And Laser beak was their most effective support and intelligence officer. Combine that with Rumble and Frenzy for idiot muscle, and Soundwave is like 90% of the effective Decepticon army.

Wasn't he a giant cannon when we saw him in scenes back on Cybertron?

Doesn't matter anyway. Soundwave was always one of the coolest transformers of all because of his design and voice. He also seemed competent instead of being a clown who constantly jobs, like Starscream.

What the Hell is this question?
Soundwave - Stealth Cassette Player, with multiple Cassette bots. Usually the most loyal Megatron supporter.
Shockwave - Psychopath "Doctor", That one eyed bot. Allegiance with whomever allows him to pursue his tests and experiments.

When you want to compete at that level you just don't transform the fricking cannon on your shoulder into a little battery

his function was basically spying/espionage/information gathering, not necessarily front line combat.

Pal there's a reason he's second in command, and the true successor to Megatron.
And it's not just the cool shades
