I think in some ways it leans a little TOO hard into trying to be topical. I know it always was, but if you go back the episodes felt a lot more about just being as funny as possible, nowadays it feels like they’re trying too hard to make an actual point.

The A plot in this episode was just Chinpokomon again. The B plot was just the informative murder porn again.
Whatever the season was where they spoofed The Shining and Blockbuster I stopped watching. That was like the millionth new episode in a row where I didn’t even crack a smile and I never tuned in again.
For me it had a minor resurgence around 2014-2017, mostly because of the videogames being giant loveletters to classic South Park.
A lot of South Park not being funny anymore though is that America's reality has become stranger than fiction, so satire loses its meaning.
The most funny thing mutts did this last decade was Succession. And it's written by two brits, so it's not really American

The move from isolated episodes fricked it up. Cultural references and the like used to be more concise because they were isolated to a single episode, now they're spread across a whole season. A referential joke isn't funny when it's a season long, they have to hit hard and fast. I think Matt and Trey know this and have done for a while but don't particularly care about the show anymore.
