This really isn't true. I've rewatched the older episodes recently and they are just as preachy as the newer ones. Sometimes it felt they were even more blatant and unsubtle about the morals they were pushing. You may be right about them not being as funny though, they aren't as young as they used to be. They're rusty.
They definitely hold opinions that are against the status quo, just not as many nowadays as they did in the past. I guess because more of society has been aligning to the stuff they believe in these days.
