why does spawn keep refusing? violator was right about everything
he clearly has no qualms about killing people either

i think it has to do with both heaven and hell not allowed to just send demons and angels and instead having to work through agents like Spawn and the Redeemer. otherwise demons could just appear in nuke bases and frick shit up, it has to be by human hands

probably because he was human. so Malebolgia has to use sinners as his best shot as Violator conning humans only got him so far.

      Not always
I movie violator was. In early comics Violator was on par with Spawn, and often Violator was a bit stronger than hellspawns at first cause he was meant to be a training stepping stone. Its shown on the medival story how Violator thought he could frick with the current hellspawn and win the commanding position he wanted, but after barely been defeated he realized he did exactly what Malbogia wanted basically getting played.

Then again I only read early spawn so for the last 500+ issues of spawn Violator could have gotten a power boost.

Image was founded on "creator's rights" and it was good that Todd was forced to live up to the contract he drew up even if Neil didn't really need the money. It's all about the principle.

Except the "small" potatoes Gaiman was crying about was decent windfalls to everyone else.It fricked things up for everyone afterwords. Gaiman wanted to get paid in 98 as if it was still 91 and Image was selling in the millions, and his complaint was based around "Well DC pays me more"
It's like if you have a restaurant that pays under the table and everyone is happy, then some trust fund kiddie gets a job and starts making a big stink about pay not being on the books and fricks everyone over.

    >>he still refuses to kill them for some reason
This was such a bizarre change, especially considering how notable Spawn killing Billy was in Spawn's early issues. The cartoon gets a lot of praise for streamlining things, but it also added some bizarre changes.

      Anonymous

Animated Spawn didn't kill Billy because he realized that's what Mal wanted. Clown had to finish him off. Todd McFarlane isn't a good writer, the people he hired to do the cartoon improved on it.

        >If you kill the multiple child killer/rapist you're just as bad as he is!
There's no way to make this seem reasonable. If it was another black ops military guy like Al who has the dubious distinction of doing it as a job, sure, maybe. But Billy Kincaid deserved it. Even the writers knew that which is why Violator kills him.

          Anonymous

You misunderstand. Billy being killed by a Spawn opens up agreements that he can be used as a force in hell's armies against heaven. He was groomed (ha!) into becoming a general. With him being spared in the TV show it removes that possibility, worse still Billy will now be left to authorities and will likely be medicated and kept alive in a very dower environment, weakening his hellish potential. Hence "what a fricking waste"

I mean I get it on some level but most things aren't explained so you don't understand the rules of power. Like wouldn't someone like genghis khan be top spawn? Like get the old spawn probably killed them I also get regardless of being a hell spawn hell can't take away free will. Billy was evil but like he wasn't a fighter or anything so why bother recruiting him. Does evil translate to power? Is it some sin points deal that made him and Al desirable?

              Anonymous

According to that anon the logic would be that Khan, as someone who died from a long illness after falling off a horse, would be considered "redeemed" and not at the height of his power and thus not eligible--which is fricking stupid.

To build off of things, Al understood that killing him was just growing an army and being part of the intended plan, it also left Billy in limbo of what he could become, while the chances of him being redeemed were nonexistent him broken in a way where he be no value to hell was still a real possibility, hence why Violator was so sour about it and killed Billy anyway.

No matter how much you try to justify it it's still stupid.
I'm not saying Todd is a brilliant writer by any means, but killing Kincaid was a cathartic moment that served to show that Spawn wasn't limited by Big Two standards. The fact that Todd would completely lose the plot and that aspect just a couple years later doesn't change that.
        >Hell won't take him because he stopped child rape-murdering after getting arrested
How is this even meant to work? Is he still going to be drugged in hell? Does he need to kill more? He was already far more sadistic than Al was in life, given the fact that he FRICKING KILLED CHILDREN REGULARLY, OUT OF HIS OWN DESIRE.

          Anonymous

Spawn can only win by redeeming his enemies, not making Hell's army stronger. In the comic they actually show Kincaid turning into another Spawn.

            >Spawn can only win by redeeming his enemies,
Lol how is heavily drugging up a nonce "redemption?". He's not redeemed, he's just a few missed medications away from doing it again. His redemption doesn't come from his own choice.
            > In the comic they actually show Kincaid turning into another Spawn.
Spawn is theoretically gonna end up fighting a lot of other Spawns, what's one more?
            >oh but then he's gonna make a billion spawns think of that!?;^)
Then he should find a way to get strong enough to defeat them all again.

Kill some evil bastard at the peak of their cruelty, they keep all those talents after death, kill them once they are past their prime, and they have little to offer. The cosmos has rules that won't let Angels and Demons the allowance to just kill humans at their peak so they have to use humanity as the middle man of it all but with consent of the human, Al was the chosen middle man as he did enough hellish deeds to become a Spawn but naive enough that they were putting him on the stage to remove "villains" at their peak as a means to grow bigger armies, it's one of the reasons why Violator doesn't like Al in the comics.

This is stupid, convoluted writing though. Why don't they keep their talents after death if they stop killing for a while? They didn't repent. The hell body is a whole new body.

Wouldn't you rather the child rapist just die a broken mess that has no power or risk of hurting others?

I'd rather my tax money not keep him alive.

Billy only had fragments after he died, it's why the demon took the form of a small girl and had Billy play hero at first, he needed to make sure his sick urges were still there.

and his head canon he didn’t kill Billy because he knew mercilessly executing a guy who posed no threat and was a tit hair away from getting arrested is exactly what Hell wanted. The whole point of the season was “will Al fall into old habits and become a puppet of hell or break the cycle of violence and work towards regaining his humanity”. It’s a more adult take on the concept than “good guy kill bad guy who hurt kids”

"re"-watching Oz(I say this because I didn't exactly follow it the first time since I was too young) I was amused to find how low budget it felt, not just production but editing and all. It feels borderline like a public access show.
