They don't have to even be faster than sound. 200mph is insane, dodging bullets, running on water. 600mph is faster than a fighter jet. Literally anywhere between is a crazy powerful character who is ridiculously broken as is, why does everyone have to be faster than light? That's completely moronic and unnecessary

Immediately Failed step 1 the character has no limits at that point, it stops being Super speed and turns into time stop to the human eye and that's still long before you even come close to reaching the speed of light

Power scaling is the worst thing to happen to speedsters in comics. Not only does it make them look stupid for not solving all the problems but the way it's portrayed is so boring... it's just teleportation.
A speedster’s limit should be somewhere between Mach 1-5. Going at the speed of light is too OP. Don’t think people realize just how fast that is. Breaking the sound barrier is cool and strong enough
