ASM 31 dropped and we have our first look at Madame Monstrosity. Her name is Dr. Shannon Stillwell. She is the mother of Farley and Harlan Stillwell who created Scorpion and the Human Fly respectively.

Madame Monstrosity also has a daughter. She will probably be sent to track down Bailey for her mother.

I was hoping Madame Monstrosity herself would be a monster girl. I guess we will see how this goes. Also does this mean Squirrel Girl gets involved in the first issue because Madame Monstrosity thinks she is also made with her tech? I look forward to seeing how they escape from her or whatever she throws at them.

As for her claiming that she’s the mother of every monster villain in Spider-Man, remember that she’s supposed to be a megalomaniacal nut. So it might not necessarily be so.

This is Slott, he's enough of a hack to try to make her the literal mother of all spider-man villain research. It's the later authors that are going to be smart and make her a crazy b***h who presumed everyone from stegron to walrus man has a link to her.

There is utterly nothing to get invested in because it can be undone at a whim.
Any new idea that isn't loyal to 80 year old rat's nest of continuity is purged or diminished.
Nothing meaningfuilly new can be added because it's all been done before, or the aforementioned point.

Don't count your chickens yet. I'll agree with you if she is as bad as characters like Black Hat from Villainous who was used to take the credit for EVERY Cartoon Network villain. Even fricking Aku from Samurai Jack. There is still a chance she is just paranoid about her work being used by others. The fact she went to threaten her own daughter about her probably using her tech behind her back (panel is not posted) and how she writes down faulty instructions implies paranoia. Her only reason to think Bailey is a result of her work is because she saw his fangs in the paper. Slott still hasn't fricked up yet, but I do expect it. Don't get me wrong.

I would not say it's ruined. Not yet at least. I am kind of disappointed at the implication Connors may have used her research, but the Stillwells having connections to Spider-Man villains is not far fetch. Her sons are responsible for the creation of Scorpion, Human Fly, and their research would later go on to create The Answer and James Natale becoming the Vulture. Anyway, Bailey himself is still solid as a character, and there are more villains planned.

Slott can't help trying to make himself look like a good writer by forcing in all his OC's and tying them into other, better creations. Oh look more regent garbage. Oh look this character is tied in further to every other character's histories and it's yet another mystery for the customer to buy more books to get shit retcons. Yeah I get it, Slott is somewhat rational in becoming the most cynical writer and it's a smart business move for the writer to make safe bets that could net him more sales and characters that could turn our popular. Though at some point it dilutes the interest so much that it becomes what it is now. It just reeks of Slott ripping off JMS yet again while combining it with his obsession of making his writing feed back into obscure characters so it looks like he knows continuity.

I think it's more that, like any scientist, her research has been released to the public and other scientists have used aspects of it in their own work over the years. It's not like she kicked Kurt Connor's door down and gave him a perfect plan and then he made an oopsie. He did his own research, used data found by another scientist alongside it, and then it all went wrong. Which isn't weird for science it's normal to use research from others. But maybe I'm just giving it a more generous read than it deserves.

            Anonymous

To be honest I assumed something similar. We don't really know much about Madame Monstrosity. We don't even know her real name except that her last name might also be Stillwell. At some point she could have been a well known scientist someone like Dr. Connors heard about and studied. She is old and definitely has a history. It could be a more nuanced influence than something direct. Otherwise we are going to need panels showing us this.

It might play out that way. Squirrel Girl is going to be involved with Madame Monstrosity along with Bailey, and the only reason why I can think of is because she thinks SG is also created with her research. We obviously know that she isn't, and it gives her more of a reason to team up with Bailey.

Some depictions have him drawn like a hybrid of a rhino. The latest example I can think of was his planned design for Across the Spider-Verse before he got scrapped.

          Anonymous

That was basically the animated "Ultimate Spider-Man" version.

In comics, his main origin was experimentation with gamma and a hard suit.

      Anonymous

I don't get why anons are upset about this. Dr. Connors I understand, but Rhino is a thug with no brain. He got turned into Rhino by nameless scientists. Who is to say they didn't recycle equipment of Farley after he died or whatever? That is how they managed to have Farley be indirectly responsible for the existence of the Answer who is a pain in the ass for Peter. As for Morbius who the frick cares. Marvel can never decide if he should be an anti-hero or whatever the hell they try to do with him.

As someone who is actually a fan of Morbius, Marvel can go Frick Off with that implication and stick it up their pimply virgin, unshaven troony asses. Because whats implied there is that he stole her research, possibly even for his Nobel prize research. Which coming from a genderbent Professor Pyg, a two bit Jackal/Sauron rippoff, is fricking stooopid and lazy. "Look, our villain is cooler because we retconned shit so that they took inspiration from her?" Does she actually do anything evil or cool?

I'm glad Leto's movie ruined any further use for the character if the Vita comics, B-Negative, and these awful cameos are what's coming out. I hope it costs Marvel more to renew the trademark and copyright than what they'll ever get outta using or reprinting him.

Given the (pretty decent) probability that Bailey is a animal-human hybrid freak and has shown he can grow additional eyes and fangs, perhaps he will have a full on spider monster transformation?

You're welcome and I agree. Just six more days until we get the rest of the issue.

We are going to get a bunch of cameos according to Slott. I am already betting on the Fantastic Four. Bailey is obviously going to explain to Peter about how Reed gave him the costume.

Now I am really looking forward to the next issue. Daredevil being in this was something I didn't know I wanted. Also, I love seeing Peter's old suit. The current one looks too weird.

This is giving me good vibes so far. Hopefully that isn't a false positive.

Why would it? Seems like Peter will come to understand Bailey. We will see why Peter took him in as his sidekick.

Spider-Man says the boy has 8 eyes. Unless his human eyes no longer work, that seems different than what is depicted.

It's just poor wording. I think Peter was meant to say that he has 8 extra eyes. Not that the number is suppose to be 8 in total.

So not only does he have a costume similar to House of M Peter, he was bald like him too.

Holy frick. Also I don't think he becomes bald. He probably had his head shaved while he was experimented on. Unless we see him transform without his mask we can't be sure though. Anyway, so the lens do have a purpose, and I guess this is what Slott meant by Bailey's story was going to be weird. Cool he got to meet and be trained by Daredevil though. I have a feeling we will also see the moment Reed gives Bailey his costume.

I really like that Daredevil helped train Bailey..

How many young Spider People is Daredevil a mentor figure with? Off the top of my head is Peni and her version of Daredevil.

.....Rhino isn't a animal hybrid, he's a gamma (hulk) mutate with a special suit of armor grafted to his body. The frick is this? This b***h is just a weird mix of High Evolutionary and Doctor Tramma

The same why how Scorpion is not exactly a hybrid even though Farley managed to create him with her research.

Good thing his hair grows back later on. He was just shaved like most test subjects in fiction.

ahh, okay. i was still half asleep and had to re-read that part with Daredevil being a flashback, my bad. imagine if he was stuck being bald lmao. also, i'm still warming up to madame m. kind of mixed feelings. slott didn't write her to be the progenitor of the older characters, just that some they used some of her research and bad things happen to them. chalk it up to narcissism or something even if in a way, it makes them look a touch extra incompetent. harlan and farley, sure, they're her idiot kids now but dr. connors, rhino and morbius? that's where it's kind of a mixed bag to me.
like the other anon said, it's possible that they took some of her research without crediting her but she is a new character and that makes it a bit harder to take in. it does reflect the scientific process in the scientist characters in that you learn from others, read their published stuff and try to apply things to solve problems (usually crediting your peers). i do like the idea of her being haughty about her papers, the superiority complex kind of works with the tone she uses talking to her daughter

Rhino works since he is not a scientist who experimented on himself. He was a random thug who got tested on. The scientists who worked on him could be written as trying to recreate Farley's method in creating Scorpion. Farley made him by having him be connected to a scorpion themed armor he is unable to take off, which is similar to Rhino having his suit grafted onto him. It would also not be the first time random scientists reused Farley or Harlan's methods. It's how we got the creation of the Answer.
