Unlike Bailey Miguel's mutation allows him to produce organic webbing. You can even see the organ that makes it on this page. Regardless I like the slight body horror take. Nothing too extreme but weird enough.

He looks a bit like the monster baby from It's Alive (1974) except Vecchio draws his fang teeth going in funky directions.

I don't think we've seen his final form.

I don't think we have either. Bailey says he does not like to monster out.

Kinda disappointed they didn't unravel the mystery over time and just dumped everything right out in the open like that

I was ready to go for a ride and I'm immediately not interested in the character anymore

Well, we only know his power set and that he got trained by Daredevil (the former was pretty obvious already). We have to learn something about him, or else it wouldn't be believable that Peter would warm up to the kid. As for mysteries, we still don't know who Bailey's parents are. His mom might be Stephanie Briggs, but his dad? Did he always have some spider powers to begin with? And why does he seem to have a stronger psychic connection to Peter?

yeah, the fang pointing outward makes me think of some asian mythological creatures. like Barong or cultures of that area. it has its place in some designs but it's a bit ehhhh for spider-boy. it's a miss, personally.

Chris Samnee, co-creator and artist of Firepower with Robert Kirkman, drew fanart of Bailey.

        https://twitter.com/ChrisSamnee/status/1691143052776058884

this is cool, i like inked artwork like this. colors are fine when they complement the artist's style, but bw stuff also rocks

We learn another one of Bailey's rogue gallery: Gutter-Ball. Happy that they will get to work with each other.

A lot of pages are missing with important info. What do you guys think so far?

yo this is great, thanks for these. let's just see how spider-boy deals with villains he used to fight. he might just confuse them with how he already knows ways to deal with them, intel advantage is great to have

Sounds adorable although I felt Bailey was referring to a normal tie while fighting Mr. Negative's goons. It's why he says nobody can use pulling on his tie against him if the situation was reversed. Also, this is just speculation but I think the only time he ever had to wear a suit and tie was for his mother's funeral. Hopefully we learn more about his parentage.

Seems Slott was subtweeting about a guy who went on a hilarious spergy rant on Twitter about him and this reveal with Dr. Connors, Morbius, and Rhino. Slott tried his best to keep it vague about what he was talking about without spoiling, but the timing is too close for it to be a coincidence since we know he does browse Twitter.
      >Constantly in awe of comic fans who get *really* worked up and upset over story moments that can be easily explained away by either...
      >1. An unreliable narrator. or 2. An easily reversed death. It's comics. C'mon.
I could be wrong and maybe it is coincidental. Some anons did suspect Madame Monstrosity to be a paranoid schizo anyway. Rhino is not even a hybrid for example.

        Anonymous

I think she’s just a paranoid megalomaniac combined with the wicked stepmother from Cinderella.

I agree with you on that. The wicked stepmother is a good comparison. I get a little bit of that in her design.

        Anonymous

Slott just dropped some commentary regarding this page. Essentially we can dismiss Madame Monstrosity as a schizo who had nothing to do with the Lizard, Rhino, and Morbius. Posted over at CBR.
        >Is it that big a surprise that they all had a mother who was also a scientist in the same field? And is it that big of a "square peg" to suggest that she was one of the masterminds behind that field of science?
        >Outside of those connections, the Lizard, Morbius, & Rhino "revelations" are things that she's said over a phone call. We have no idea if this twisted, mad scientist is telling the truth or not about any of that. There's nothing we've seen. No evidence at all. Outside of 4 word balloons from a character we've just met. She could be an unreliable narrator. Or she's telling us some version of the truth-- and maybe someday we'll see those back stories. Or maybe we won't.

On the one hand, fair enough, but on the other the actual page seems to offer very little room for interpretation. That is, it invites only one real interpretation because she never outright says it, but as the comic viewer you get to see visual aids indicating just who she's talking about. And there's literally only one reason to do this.

Obviously, one could still go "well she's unreliable," but from the perspective as a reader of the comic the actual page in front of you offers more evidence in support than not. You have to actively dismiss the thing you're seeing. A better writer would've done something else. Something where she actually said the thing and the comic didn't rely on art to communicate the idea. And she would've said it in a way much more clearly showing how two-sided this sort of thing could be and why she would say/think it even if it wasn't true.

Accusing Slott of being a poor writer isn't a crazy thing, though.

You don't have your artist feature the subject in great detail when the narrator is unreliable. And Slott has pulled this shit countless times before on Spider-Man the exact same way.

          >Canon
Comics have a loose definition of canon. It's not known to be consistent.

Shut up wiki reader. You add nothing to the discussion. Learn how canon actually works, read some comics, then come back.

I think it's more that Wells literally can't handle writing it, he can barely keep up with what little happens in ASM.

I think this was really Lowe trying to create a smokescreen and show higher ups that with Spider-Man options out there it's not a complete dumpster fire given recent criticism. I don't believe it is working

Well, outside that we've never had a 10-11 year old spider-powered kid with no family, trying to make it as a superhero in a world that does not remember him...

I think it's also a character dynamic with Peter that we've never seen before. Spidey's never had a true sidekick, since Alpha was always meant to be an aborted attempt at one (while showing that Peter was the right type of kid to get powers) and Miles Morales was simply always presented as an equal and replacement (which I've never liked). The idea of Pete having to help train or team up with an actual protege or surrogate son (or nephew) is an interesting angle.

And there's also the potential fun factor -- Bailey facing his own crazy rogues and some D-listers from Peter's rogue gallery in a Silver-Age style, off the wall narrative could be entertaining. Not saying it will be. But I already like Bailey's powers (especially that his spider sense warns him when other people are in danger) and I think there are a lot of potential stories there.

      Anonymous

Since I barely know the others, Bailey is interesting to me because his conflict requires that he works harder than anyone else to be remembered now that he has nothing. With the implication that he is an orphan some drama can come from it.

So he has a good amount of people he can check with in after this issue.
    >Daredevil trained him
    >Mr. Fantastic supposedly made his unstable molecule shoes and maybe his outfit as well
Hopefully he gets more interactions with characters outside trying to convince Peter he is his sidekick.

      Anonymous

Part of me doesn't want him to get Peter's help because it would force him to survive on the streets for a while and we could have multiple issues with him trying to talk to Daredevil, Mr. Fantastic and so on. I'm not so sure why Peter wouldn't help a homeless superpowered child who claims to have known him though. It'd be extreme character assassination.

        Anonymous

I think Bailey will still have to handle himself. Peter would just come by for more serious situations. Bailey's lack of web shooters make him more vulnerable than Peter.

          Anonymous

How? He has a paralyzing bite, foresight spider vision that tells him WHO to specifically help, eight eyes that let him see any attacks coming from any direction, perfect baby blue eyes to woo women of any color, and he is a day walker ginger so the sun won't kill him like others.

He has more ups than Peter.

Bailey in the previous issue said Peter moves faster than him thanks to the webs. Web shooters are also good for ranged attacks.

      >Since we are getting two stand alone stories in Spider-Boy #1
We are? I thought it was just going to be like how it is usually done. To answer your question I think two stories in one issue would be good to have more scenarios to put Bailey in but I would like some arcs which would require a whole issue. Is two stories in one his they are going to do it for the whole run or is it just because it's the first issue so they want it to be special?

I thought it was going to be two in one for the first issue. Spider-Boy teaming up with Squirrel Girl, and then Bailey (and possibly Spider-Man) vs Madame Monstrosity.

In the case of Madame Monstrosity, she kept a low profile. Before Bailey was erased it seems she was only discovered when Peter went to save Bailey from her. We will have to wait for the other rogues to guess how things went for them.

Strangely enough, I think this is more in his wheelhouse. A wacky kids adventure book as opposed to having one of the big titles like Spider-Man or Iron Man might be something much better suited for him. He can certainly play around with the idea without pissing off longtime fans of a particular established character. We will see how it plays out, but if he can keep a Silver-Age tone with off the wall villains and a convincing storyline about this homeless, forgotten kid trying to rediscover his place in the world as a superhero, it could work. There are things I’m hoping to see, but I also have no expectations for. For instance, I’d love for Bailey to become Jameson’s office gopher to make some cash (as well as to regularly interact with Jonah) or fight Stegron, but that depends on what Mr. Slott has planned.

In one of the flash backs of the issue, it seems to imply Peter took Bailey to school, promising to take him to Coney Island if he had good grades for a whole semester. It's honestly cute and I wish I had the page to post it right now. I would not be surprised if people thought Bailey was Peter's son, especially since he is a redhead like MJ.

No unfortunately but we get a page where Bailey goes to apologize to Daredevil, but Daredevil reveals that he knows Bailey prefers being around Peter because he is able to keep secrets from him since Daredevil's powers allows him to detect when Bailey lies. Bailey also says he likes being around Peter because he was the only person to have put so much effort into taking care of him.

The mask hides the eyes when not in use. I guess the ones on his back don't show up unless he uses them.
Either way I really like the idea of using Bailey to give all the Silver Age villain a chance to shine, it's really smart and I'm surprise this hasn't been done before. It seems like a good way to use all the D-listers as well as give some individuality and uniqueness to Bailey instead of, well, being just a sidekick.

Somebody mentioned this villainous character (rather derisively) in another thread, but I think Slott really needs to go back to the old Spidey Super Stories issues and have Spider-Boy face some of those goofy comic villains. Can you imagine if Bailey was taking part in a FEAST Easter egg hunt only to have Funny Bunny steal all the eggs?

You could also throw in White Rabbit for kicks.

I really like the idea of a Spider-Adjacent with a rogues gallery of goofy D-Listers, on top of just being a fun angle it also means that you might not get as much demand for constant escalation or tunnel vision for the same 3-5 villains that "deserve" to be threats.

I don't know, character-wise, I sort of think Pete's in the right telling him to sit out fights with something like Carnage. Isn't Stegron kind of a threat himself, given his strengths? Yeah they're silly dino-themed villains (alongside Sauron) but Stegron can tank some heavy hits, no? I'm not against the idea, but just thinking either Sauron or Stegron might require more of a team-up. Carnage definitely is too dangerous, an alt universe Dylan was killed here.

    >The SPIDER-MAN book isn’t ending. It’s more like it’s fissioning into 2 books:
    >SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN with Mark Bagley.
    >And SPIDER-BOY with Paco Medina.
    >Each book is designed to be a good jumping on point for new readers.
    >Yet storylines & subplots from SPIDER-MAN will continue.

Paco Medina's art style seems like a really good fit for Spider-Boy.
I just hope Peter ditches the piss yellow Goblin-inspired Spider suit with the arm cysts. That thing has been hideous from the start. Have him go back to his regular red and blues please.

Neat. I was thinking about his bugpack having robot limbs. He can already wallcrawl but they might help defensively even if that might require some extra training time as with his eyes. Swinging with webs still seems like the faster way to move around though.

I do wonder if 'monstering out' acts like a temporary buff but at an increased stamina use. He just gets super tired if he had to fight in that mode for an extended time.

Robot limbs would be a cool upgrade for the bugpack.
