Spider-Boy

So, um, why does Cinemaphile still hate Dan Slott? His new book is good and funny. Probably the best thing Marvel has published this year. I hope they won't kill this chatacter anytime soon.

This book is awful. I say this as the anon that once said “his FF is the only worthwhile comic marvel is making” which lead to some autist storytiming every comic he’s ever made rather than just FF. Slott can’t write kids and it’s just cutesy nonsense. He hoped he could appeal to Jon fans but we just want DC to de-age Jon and make him straight and less lame.

    Bailey sucks.

I still find the idea of Spider-Man having a kid sidekick that everyone forgot about due to cosmic shenanigans absurd, but the first two issues were okay, and Bailey himself has been tolerable. That does not, however, make up for several years of Slott's bad writing and obnoxious attitude.

Who gives a shit about Slott or the author of any work. I remember a simpler time when we just access a product without knowledge about the creator. Now the internet makes that so easy to find, and people allow it to sully their perception of things. As long as the work is fine then no problem. If the creator is a psycho yelling at clouds where I can't see him then why does it matter? Otherwise it leads to the development of moronic parasocial relationships. Look at how normies hate Ren and Stimpy only because they allow John K to live rent free in their heads while ignoring that other people contributed to that show.

OP asked why people hate Slott. I hate him because he's an butthole who wrote a lot of shit stories. Spider-Boy and the current Superior run have been tolerable so far, but he hasn't done nearly enough for me to give him a free pass for his terrible last four years of ASM (I'd also throw in the original Superior run, but some people her bafflingly enjoyed it) and being an insufferable dickhead.

What do you mean? I have seen Cinemaphile praise Spider-Boy for being a fun comic with no nonsensical baggage attached to it like ASM or most modern comics. It's a classic style comic focusing on entertainment with goofy villains like Hellifino and Balloon Man. What more can you ask for?

Spider-Boy is just ok. Every issue so far being a crossover betrays that Dan has little faith in him beyond gimmicks, which is exactly what he is. His premise is just really really stupid.

I’ll be completely honest, my thoughts on Bailey are also being clouded by three outside sources.
The pedophiles here making me dislike him in principle.
Slott being a terrible person and writer, and how forced he felt with all the variants and stories about him early on. I still don’t believe that he wouldn’t have got an ongoing had he not gotten attention from the variants and gimmicks (I.e. that was always the plan to give him one).
And finally, I’m a seething Bengay. Lowe coming out saying that the “Spider-Landscape” is too full then okaying this (while also continuing to ignore Mayday) has made me predisposed to disliking him. And it certainly doesn’t help that Slott was saying that Bailey is basically the same thing as Peter having a kid, which was beyond moronic

It's really not that good. Spider-Boy is an inherently stupid concept, no matter how you spin it, and it just proves that Slott and editorial really don't get Spider-Man. Why give a kid sidekick to the hero who was meant to repudiate the idea of lame kid sidekicks? Why would a hero who's moral foundation is his idea of responsibility condone a 10-year-old fighting supervillains alongside him? Why, if Marvel is so bloody intent on keeping Spider-Man this indistinctly youthful manchild who can never grow up, do they then keep introducing other, younger Spider-people like Miles, Spider-Boy, and Spider-Gwen?
I'll at least begrudge Slott some credit for actually putting some effort into trying to make Spider-Boy distinct, unlike Miles, by actually trying to do something more than just "new Spider-Man but black" and coming up with sensible special powers and new villains for Spider-Boy. But that still doesn't stop the concept being dumb or Slott being a lame, unimaginative, and ultimately uninteresting writer. And the ONLY reason why anyone on Cinemaphile says they like Spider-Boy is because they're gay pedos.

        >explain why I dislike something
        >"uh well you're trying too hard, so your opinion is invalid"
Fantastic argument, really makes me think that maybe there's more to Spider-Boy's ""popularity"" than just shotagays who are permanently coomer-brained.

For what it's worth, the two things I like about Spider-Boy are that his powers aren't a carbon copy of Spider-Man's proper like his spider-sense and bite, and the fact he's got his own origin as a human boy mutated into his current state as a freak along with his own rogue's gallery.

Otherwise, I'll at least say that Bailey is something of a success inspite of itself, since it does have all the ingredients to be a total shit sundae, especially written by Slott. I think about the only reason it's not a trainwreck is that he's been the anti-Miles in how much the world has officially shit on Bailey to make him work for his cred, and how he clearly isn't here to outshine or replace Spider-Man. It's practically a miracle his stories are this readable, even if they're not the most imaginative.

I agree with your two points. Like I said, Slott has at least put the work in to try and make this character more than just 'Spider-Man but he's a kid'.
I don't think it's a success, though. Marvel can churn out as many variant covers as they want, but that's never really meant anything, and it's pretty obvious we can't exactly trust Slott claiming on CBR that the book is totally selling a bajillion copies.

          Anonymous

I consider him a success in the sense that his book actually made me turn around and find Bailey actually worth reading, but you're right if we're talking financially. We'll never know until much later if the book has any worth because of how much Marvel games the system. Especially cause if those leaks are right, we're going to be seeing all of the other cover-variant sidekicks besides Bailey be shoved into the mess that is Marvel atm.

      >Why give a kid sidekick to the hero who was meant to repudiate the idea of lame kid sidekicks?
Wrong. Peter was made to prove that a teenager could be their own hero instead of a sidekick to another one. He wasn't made to be an argument against the concept, but to prove to suits that they are wrong to always stick to the same formula of teen=sidekick.
      >Why would a hero who's moral foundation is his idea of responsibility condone a 10-year-old fighting supervillains alongside him?
This was already addressed in the comic. Peter rejected him at first, but Bailey said that due to his powers he feels responsible to help people. Otherwise his spider sense will make him feel guilty if he ignored everyone in danger. Peter reluctantly accepts him with certain conditions as he mentors Bailey.
      >Why, if Marvel is so bloody intent on keeping Spider-Man this indistinctly youthful manchild who can never grow up, do they then keep introducing other, younger Spider-people like Miles, Spider-Boy, and Spider-Gwen?
Appealing to demographics. Basic logic held by suits. It sucks but Peter is a brand execs will want to keep around forever.
