Which is why I always advocate for Peter being 17 when he gets bit, even in a reboot, as it gets through the high school bullshit quicker to get the character to adulthood much sooner.

They tried that with ultimate and bendis kept pete in the setting for over a decade anon. Just accept it anon, there isn’t anything in comics for people who like these characters anymore

He kept him 15 until he decided to age him one year much later in the run. Even though the rest of Ultimate definitely progressed through several years, all of Spidey and by extension the rest of the Ultimate U happened in a single year.

Yeah so here's the problem with that. Constantly rebooting spiderman is what caused a major death spiral at Marvel. Instead of realizing they needed completely fresh blood, that they needed to make this living universe live instead of stay as a vegetable that they're attempting to bring back for the dozenth time instead of pulling the plug. I don't like miles but he's been the only goddamn thing invigorating peoples love for comics even though he's a shit character. .

Soft reboots are still reboots. Moving back to the status quo causes fatigue. Things have to end unless all you want are artists who are going to die and leave you with nothing to replace them with as they move to anime and the sonic fandom.

Matt Wagner’s Dark Moon Rising took two Golden Age stories and expanded them each into a 6 issue miniseries. Something similar can be done with the Ditko-Lee material. Using those stories as a foundation to do so much more.

I don't think you could. Whereas nobody gives a shit about Golden/Silver Age DC stories, the Lee/Kirby/Ditko era is practically gospel to Marvel. But something like Mark Waid's World's Finest, where it's an original story but just set sometime in the past, could work.

Suppose they decide to reboot things back to the Ditko-era and instead of MJ and Gwen, they went back to Betty and Liz. Who’d work best for Pete?

      Anonymous

One could do just as Ditko-Lee did with the characters, or take the dynamic through another route. In going the Ultimate route and making Liz into Firestar, you could have Liz fall for Spider-Man as he helps her control her powers, but is cold to Peter Parker. Betty, as a contrast, falls for Peter but hates Spider-Man for not being able to save her brother. Liz hates Peter but loves Spider-man. Betty loves Peter but hates Spider-Man. You could use this as a source of internal conflict within Peter. Should he choose Betty for the normal life? Or Liz for the hero one?

This November, Cletus Kasady is reborn in a brand-new CARNAGE ongoing series by writer Torunn Grønbekk and artist Pere Pérez. This reunion between Marvel’s most savage symbiote and its favorite host will put all super heroes on high alert and lay the groundwork for the next VENOM epic.

The series will spin out of the current DEATH OF THE VENOMVERSE limited series where Carnage is on a murder spree through the Venomverse, slaughtering his way to the throne of the King in Black! His dark ascent to power is only beginning and now he’s back on the hunt for Cletus, loyal followers, and more…

Describing the new series, Grønbekk said, "What are powers without purpose? Having hunted down and triumphed over his greatest weaknesses, Carnage’s powers are unrivaled. However, a piece is still missing—the symbiote needs a host with the ambition to match its own. And for Carnage, there was only ever one. (And you know who!)"

"I knew writing Carnage would be an opportunity to explore some pretty dark themes, but I am surprised and delighted to find that the darkness is coming from some unexpected places," she added. "It is my kind of horror—overwhelmingly gruesome, but still rooted firmly in humanity. Expect big symbiote action, mysteries, myth, and murder. This is gospel, according to Cletus Kasady, and he is the end of the world as we know it."

Why would the symbiote want to separate from Cletus anyway?
If this was an anime, their synch-level would be 110% to Eddie's 60% (I'm not quantifying Flash's 'drug the symbiote until it develops stockholm syndrome from you choosing not to drug it that day' thing)

          Anonymous

EXACTLY. wasn't the whole thing with Carnage that Cletus and the symbiote were bonded so closely they'd effectively merged?? hence why he refers to himself with "I" rather than "we".

            Anonymous

If I remember right, they once ripped off the symbiote and destroyed it without killing Cletus.
But Cletus had the symbiote in his cells so it eventually regenerated
Whenever it bonds to another host, it tried to make them more like Cletus.
Cletus has had his head blown apart and survived because he's basically a goop monster when he's Carnage, and it fixed(?) his lower body after he was torn in two (though art was inconsistent on that, sometimes he had/has robot legs so I dunno).
That being said, maybe other hosts also survive being blown up while wearing a symbiote, Carnage is the one I have pages of it happening though.

eddie's recovered from some pretty gnarly injuries thanks to symbiote powers, and while I'm not fully caught up on the cosmic horror venom thing I think he's part symbiote now and he just straight up grows himself a new body at some point

It’s a shame Carnage is trapped in his own book because he’s exactly what ASM needs right now. He could solve so many ongoing problems with the Spider series:

      >Regain his symbiote from Norris and Liz so we can stop having so many of Peter’s human friends running around in a symbiote.
      >Cure Norman of his sinless life since Norman wore him AND Carnage overcame Sin Eaters powers in Axis when he was Carnage-Man
      >Gut Paul like a fish because frick that guy
      >Restore Ben’s memories and turn him back from his life as Chasm. Since Ben wore Carnage back in Web of Carnage, he could use that codex to restore all of Ben’s memories and make it so he no longer holds a grudge against Peter anymore and can go back to being a hero.

The story is right there. Just have Mephisto decide to frick with Chasm by restoring the memory of him being the Spider-Carnage and let him loose from hell in order to track Carnage down. Carnage decides to help (why not, he just restored Morlun’s power and freed him for no reason) and upon bonding, restores Ben’s memories, discovering that Spider-Man is Peter Parker and using that he decides to go after everyone Peter loves. Along the way he kills Paul who sacrifices himself for MJ (her Jackpot powers don’t do anything and she retires from heroics.) He goes after Liz and Normie and takes their Carnage knock offs. Norman puts up a fight but Carnage fricks with his head. Eventually Norman, Peter and Ben team up to stop Carnage and we get a cliffhanger where Norman starts going Stormin’ Norman again.

He is the most elegant retcon that Peter could possibly have right now.

Is Carnage the type to just cause chaos for the sake of it and is willing to not kill some villains so that they cause more suffering or could be of some use to him? I'm trying to wrap my head around Carnage being just a straight up copy of the Joker or if he really is unique because I haven't read too much Cletus. It seems like both characters struggle from writers wanting different directions. I'm fine with both going on villain teams that they then betray.

Carnage has teamed up (and betrayed and killed) a fair amount of villains over the years. That was the whole deal with the Maximum Carnage event. He is 1000% about chaos for chaos’ sake. He can be persuaded into sparing innocent people if they convince him it’s more chaotic/unexpected.

It’s the cycle Carnage has been in since 2016 or so. He’s trapped in constant event build.

        >Gets his own book
        >Builds up his power level
        >Spirals into a Venom crossover event where the focus switches to Venom
        >Jobs at the end of the event
        >Gets his own book after a few months to rehab his power level and image
        >The cycle repeats

He’d be better off if Brock could develop an actual rogues gallery and stop relying on Carnage all the time.

James Franco originally auditioned for the role of Spider-Man, but lost it to Tobey Maguire. Honestly, he would've been a better choice for the role as he'd be more accurate to Ditko/Romita Pete, with Tobey as a more faithful Harry. Even the movies switched their dynamic around. Comic Pete was the dominant one. Franco would've been able to sell the more short-tempered and arrogant side to Pete that is rarely seen in live action media.

      Anonymous

Nah, Franco at that age was too good looking to pull off the HS nerd that Maguire did a good job with, and even when Franco turned the butthole off to play Harry as close to [eter as possible in SM3 when Harry loses his memory and is grateful for everything, it felt cringey and out of character, which is what his Peter Parker would have been like, and awful mess.

        Anonymous

Ditko Pete was short tempered and arrogant, but plenty confident and good-looking. A far cry from the loser wallflower nerd that people seem to think he is. Franco could’ve portrayed a Peter that was true to the source rather than the direction they decided to go with.

Who do people here think ot Ditko? Not just Spider-Man, but as a person and his other works?

  15. 9 months ago
    Anonymous

Ditko wanted a much more grounded world for Spider-Man. He wanted Peter to deal with true to life situations while having Spidey in darker ones. Of course, what was considered "grounded" and "dark" in the 60s is a bit different nowadays, especially with what they were allowed to do. Now, you can have things go darker and more true to life.
He also preferred that he existed in his own universe, separate from the rest of the Marvel U.
Stan wanted Spidey to be more lighthearted and comedic. To have more fantastical elements in his setting, complete with crossovers with other heroes like the F4.

      Anonymous

That's ultimately, to me at least, is what led to Ditko leaving. This, along with a combination of his growing objectivism view, led him to not being able to compromise with his vision, so he left. Though, let's all be honest here, Stan was the reason why Spidey is as popular as he is. Ditko may have created all the other things, and yes I know I sound stupid, but it was Stan's dialouge and nature that led to many people relating with Spidey, along with toning down what Ditko wanted, like the protest scene in #38. You can see in Ditko's work after Spidey that there was a reason why Stan handled dialogue.

        Anonymous

Honestly, I prefer a darker Spidey. He’s start out a bit more antihero-like in a much more grounded world, with the more fantastical elements of the greater Marvel U slowly revealing themselves over time. Like instead of Spidey meeting the F4 early on, he’d meet characters like Daredevil and the Punisher. The F4 and the Avengers would work better as a Year 2/3 for Spidey.

Spider-Woman Wages War Against Her Greatest Enemies in New Solo Series
Steve Foxe and Carola Borelli launch a new 'Spider-Woman' ongoing series this November.

This November, Jessica Drew has a new mission, and this time, it’s personal!

Announced last month at San Diego Comic-Con, SPIDER-WOMAN is a new ongoing series that spins directly out of GANG WAR, the upcoming crossover that sees war erupt between New York City’s deadliest crime lords. Written by Steve Foxe (X-MEN ANNUAL, DARK X-MEN) and drawn by rising star Carola Borelli, Jessica Drew will strike out in a brand-new direction as she’s tasked by Spider-Man to take down some of her most bitter foes.

But something has made Jessica angrier than ever, and her ruthless crime fighting will shock her fellow heroes during and beyond the events of GANG WAR. As she tries to solve the heartbreaking mystery that's upended her entire world, Spider-Woman will come face-to-face with a terrifying new force of evil. Fans can discover more about what kicks off Jessica’s dramatic new journey in a special preview in tomorrow’s AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #31!

The Web of Destiny restored Spider-Woman’s life, but even Captain Marvel and Madame Web can tell something’s changed. After Viper engineers a deadly union between Hydra and Diamondback that’s about to tear the city apart, Spider-Man wants to recruit her for a new team to face an all-new foe – one who is powerful enough to destroy the city while burning Spider-Woman’s world to the ground.

"Jessica Drew has been my favorite Marvel heroine since I was a kid,” Foxe said. “From the instantly classic costume to her complex backstory, there's just so much to her. She's a spy, a street-smart detective, a superheroic best friend, an Avenger, a Spider-Verse-hopper, a mother, and a survivor. Getting the chance to do it alongside Carola, as well as Eric Koda on our prologue, has been bioelectric heaven."

For what I have read in some bad quality pictures, it seems Jessica's baby has disappeared. Probably a side effect of her being erased, as her baby wouldn't have ever born.

Personally, I don't want her to lose her baby. Unlike the whole thing with MJ's "kids", Gerry was a real thing.

"The events of GANG WAR ended up being the perfect springboard for a story that embraces what Zeb [Wells] and co. are doing in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN while also telling a distinctly Spider-Woman saga—with lasting ramifications for some of her closest relationships—in her own book," he continued. "Few characters have been through Hell like Jessica Drew has been through Hell, and I'm so excited to throw even more at her."

He didn’t want them to, they fought to help save him to do it. It’s different than him dragging his infant around incredibly dangerous situations after ending his marriage because he was afraid for his family. The comic builds peter up as a person through his family, the movie drags him down as a man to prop up others with the same mask

You don’t need his family to be superheroes to do it. Just being there to welcome him with open arms after beating the bad guy is all that’s needed. To give him something to fight for. To make all the shit he has to deal with worth it in the end.

I think Norman would use her death to psychologically torture Peter. Maybe giving him false hope that she's alive, only to inevitably find her dead.

Alright so; Jackpot. Looks like this is MJ's new gimmick for a while. Can it work? What writer could? Frick if I know, but let's try and have fun with it anyway and make the best out of a shitty run.

I'm going to write a simple premise for MJ as if she has her own solo series. Leave this here
    >http://powerlisting.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Random
And then you tell me how she solves the problem with this random power she rolled, if at all. I'm hoping for some really dumb shit where she fumbles with either a new or useless power, possibly making situations worse due to inexperience as a superhero.

First setup: "Oh my god! There's a bomb on this subway car, and it's being held by that deranged pants-less homeless man!"

You don't have to deal with all the stupid bullshit from the past anon, you can always retcon the stupid shit in the most lazy way imaginable, remember how they retconed sins past? With the whole Mysterio fricking with normal? It was stupid, it was lazy but readers still were willing to accept it and go with it because it erased one of the worst characters assassinations in the comic industry.

Just do the same with this shit, just retcon it in the most irrespetful way possible, make it all just be a weird nightmare or some illusionary dimension created by some jerk god who just wanted to mess with Peter and that's it.

This is going to be an issue in ten years, now that they have all these tie in yearly events happening. How much longer can you really stretch peter in mid 20's for a run, this whole run already had a year past so he's definitely 25 -30 range now. Now add in 5 more hellfire gala event tie ins, he's gonna reach over 30-35 what then? IDK how you wanna keep peter as the same amber person at that point, but it will be way harder to justify unless you pulled an time reboot.

I feel as though, this was written just before he left the offices, and is just him expressing how he feels about Spidey, given that him and Miles didn't do much in Secret Wars. I also thought we got kind of a insight into his thought process about stories during Secret Wars ending, with how the story that started all of the Marvel Universe, having reached it's endpoint. But, I am autistic, so I'm an idiot.

Peter cucked Ned. Betty left her husband in France to be with Peter. They fricked and Ned still tried to get her back. The dude explained it as her being “confused”. Truth is, Betty settled for Ned when she actually wanted to be with Peter.

we all know this at least those who read the original 200 issues.

Betty is ruined because she married/had a kid with NED

      blame spencer.

The one interesting thing about Ned was that he was the Hobgoblin until they retconned him to be some patsy for the REAL Hobgoblin instead. The one thing this guy had going for him and it was just taken away, just like that.

now we are in a sort of limbo in which Ned is the Hobgoblin but not quite so.
basically sharing the mantle because that's useful to the REAL Hobgoblin.

he's a nothing character since the 90s when they revealed that he was innocent or some BS.

              [...]
Shit, I had only remember hobo dead dying and for some reason was thinking pregnant Betty with his resurrection was after. It was blending in my mind with the Hobgoblin relapse, my bad

              no problem.
i mean everyone thought clone Ned to be father until spencer revealed that nope it was original Ned coming back from the dead.
and Betty got pregnant in 2 months or so.

Yeah I'm thinking it's time to bring Betty back as Peter's one true love

              That never happened.

It's explicitly canon that Kingsley became Hobgoblin/brainwashed Ned while Norman was hijacking control over Scrier in Europe and that only when he was done taking over the cult and turning it into a legit crime syndicate to further his criminal goals, did someone bother to tell him about the existence of Hobgoblin and Norma basically let it go because he had "evolved beyond being the Goblin" by that point.

Pre-retconning Kingsley as Hobgoblin, Ned had MULTIPLE motives for being Hobgoblin:

              >>Just being pure evil (the Stern stories)
              >>Ned not being pure evil and adopting the Hobgoblin identity to kill the Kingpin to make the NYC a better place and him convincing Richard Fisk to become the Rose to infiltrate his dad's empire as his mole (Christopher Priest in an issue designed after Ned was killed)
              >>Ned secretly always being evil plus wanting to murder Spider-Man because Betty was having a nervous breakdown behind everyone's back thinking her mom was alive and having vivid nightmares/hallucinations about her brother being killed and Spider-Man failing to save him (Web of Spider-Man's 1991 Annual back-up on the origins of the Hobgoblin plus implied in by the by fashion in Amazing #289)

Spencer retconned Ned never having the goblin serum when he brought him back and revealed he found one of Norman's secret lairs in Europe towards the end of his run and finding a spare vial of Goblin Serum, which allowed him to survive being killed. HOWEVER, we don't know what he did before he showed back up at the end of the Spencer run, or even if he was the Ned that got Betty pregnant, as Spencer killed off the Ned clone from Clone Conspiracy early in his run even though Slott had big plans for him reintegrating himself into the main book.

Ironically, they should have just made Ned Gold Goblin, since it would let them keep Kingsley as Hobgoblin but also avoid the issue of what they will do to once Norman goes evil again.

Those motives don't fit at all with what he actually fricking did without just going "lol crazy"

He was only made the hobgoblin after his death because priest was an butthole who removed defalco from the book and took hiss red herring literally

                >Slott had big plans for him
Did he? I thought Ned made one appearance after The Clone Conspiracy, and it was shortly before Slott's run ended. I remember thinking that the only reason he was revealed to still be alive was because the MCU had recently introduced its version of Ned.

Who’s better, mayday or miles? And explain why (to make it fair, ps4 and spiderverse miles count)

      Anonymous

Mayday because generational legacy characters are the best kind, plus sexo

In all seriousness, Mayday fixes roughly 100% of the issues with modern Spider-Man comics simply by existing. You can't have Mayday without also allowing Peter to finally grow up and progress as a person, and parenthood is the logical next step in his whole responsibility schtick, since being responsible for another human's existence and survival is about as big as it gets from a characterization standpoint.

In a perfect world Miles' inclusion in 616 would have been utilized to reintroduce Mayday in a satisfying and narratively meaningful way. One of the biggest complaints people have about Miles (aside from literal schizo-posting) is that he's redundant while Peter is still around. While a good writer could work around that by just having Peter mentor him (you know, like he's doing in the games), you could also give him his own time to shine WITHOUT killing off Peter, if you just gave Peter a reason to step away from heroics for a while. You know, like needing to help raise a newborn kid, and get his life together to build a stable home.

      Mayday
      1) Inheriting your dad's genetics is much less of a stretch than going through Pete's origin story again.
      2) Her additional powers are just quirky evolutions instead of OP bullshit (she can stick people to surfaces like she does. It's basically webbing without webbing).
      3) Better costume
      4) Natural progression for Pete and an actual spider-family instead of cross-dimensional immigrant via cheeseburger
      5) Has her own supporting cast and villains. Doesn't overly rely on Pete's cast (they're present, but not obnoxiously so)
      6) Pete tries to dissuade her from being Spider-man which is completely in character instead of going "OMG your suit is so awesome and it's totally cool that you want to also use my secret identity which has a LOT of baggage with completely bloodthirsty villains", which is OOC
      7) Has her own stories instead of rehasing shit that Pete's done.
      8) Supported her own universe instead of bailing to live in Pete's shadow
      9) Gives Pete a good end-point instead of participating in Pete's hellish 616 nightmare
      10) Cute

          10) Cute

It's still so moronic that they made Peter bring Mayday with him. It's one thing for him to be excited for her to have powers, but to literally bring her to another dimension is so moronic and makes him look like a dumb sitcom dad. You could of just showed Peter go back to his dimension at the end and see mayday if you really wanted to put her in the movie

            Anonymous

The only way I could have seen it work would have been Peter getting dragged into it against his will while he was guarding Mayday, so he kepe her with him because well he need to bring her back to his world as fast as possible. But that demand heavy rewrite.

how did spider never get a "dark mirror" type villain all the way until venom?

      Anonymous

Most of his villains were dark mirrors in the sense that they were people who gained their powers through accidents and decided to use them for selfish purposes. His arachnid counterpart was Scorpion.

        Anonymous

sure, but I was more talking about dark mirror in the sense that they share the same power set

He did? Venom is just the most popular.

There wasn't a villain who shared his powers until Venom, but his dark mirror was supposed to be Scorpion/Green Goblin iirc.

You could use her crush on Peter to explain why Flash has it out for him. Because of Peter’s short temper, Flash thinks that he’ll abuse Jessie just like his dad did to him and her. So he bullies him as a way to get him to stay away.

        Anonymous

It's based vaguely on the BND-Slott era stuff, yes, but if it was done by a writer who didn't completely hate the concept of character progression or view the franchise purely as an opportunity to self-insert. I like Otto being more important as a sort of mentor/close partner figure while still being undeniably a piece of shit unlike Raimi Otto, they actually made Mr. Negative somewhat compelling even if he's just Nolan Two-Face, Yuri as Wraith should be a fun antihero side story. It's like if they took some of the basic ideas from Slott's run, stripped them down and then reworked them to actually fit the character.
Really the only complaint I have is that MJ sucks. Not even just because she's Ultimate style as far as her motivations go, but that she's pretty obviously in the wrong as far as her argument with Peter goes in the first game and yet it's glossed over with Peter looking like the illogical one.
I hope they just make her Spinneret by the third game, the stealth shit sucked and it makes her look bad, and it makes sense that a more proactive MJ would fit well with it. I fell for the fakeout in the first game because I just wanted RYV to happen, if not MC2. I hope they make a Mayday spinoff as the final game, would be pure ludo.

I HATE the BND era. Doesn't mean a much better writer can't take a few of the ideas and rework them to be much more compelling. I would still prefer a game with the 80s-90s supporting cast and focus on villains (Kafka my beloved, what have they done to you?).

It's not her presence, it's the writers' insistence on making her the source of controversy. Hot dog, did I enjoy today's issue!

The stuff with Felicia was sure to draw all the focus, so let's start there--it semi-worked for me! Reminded me of the way Slott parted Peter with Bobbi--the "we don't have stuff to talk about" bit. A breezy end to breezy relationship, you'd think, but the talk in Kelly's two-parter laid the groundwork for what I felt was to be a more solid pairing. I liked them together, and there was meat on the bone there, for sure.

But it's hard to complain when the stuff in front of me is hitting.

The wedding was a lovely affair, with Wells and JRJR in great form. Great gags, kinetic action and a the opening shot of something bigger and badder on the horizon. Great stuff, enhanced by a fun AF bachelorbachelorette prelude. Janice is the best; never leave ASM, I beg

also I'm chairperson of the Michelle, Defense Lawyer fan club. Admissions closed. Sorry, fellas.

The Ms. Marvel story melted my heart, I loved it so much. David Lopez is a mensch; hope Marvel has him cooking something special. A new ongoing for Kamala? Makes me swoon just thinking about it

The Kraven tale!!! You had me gasp at a page turn, Wells, you fox! Can't wait for #32 and more of that sexy sexy Gleason art.

And Slott was no slouch, either--loved the Spidey-boy prelude. He writes the hell out of a grumpy posh brit.

oh, the Jackpot tease was pretty sweet. Art on point, Felicia's voice down pat. Off the last page, with the overturned car, seems like Jackpot is more of a rescue hero, than a crime-fighter, which is neat. Again, Pepper Potts parallels. I'm keen to try the mini now

And all the extras were sweet, too! nary a tale i didn't enjoy. good issue, i sez. Go get!

Lol. If that guy was serious or ironic, either way they captured the exact writing style Nu-Marvel editorial has when they are not doing solicitations. It's like people are trying to capture the marketing speak that Stan and Marvel had back then but without any real charm or bite to it (i.e. passion). Plus that shit has grown so old that they are all lies now and act as the basis for gaslighting people into thinking their comics are good. Instead it's filled with Tumblr quirkiness and smugness. Slott would fit right into the Dr. Who shit he loves so much.

Considering that this book is doubling down on Paul n MJ as Jackpot I wonder if once Well's run is over if the they'll force the next writer to have to legit follow up on the plot threads Wells started instead of just ignoring everything that happened.

Like what if MJ being jackpot is actually gonna be a multi-year status quo for her instead of being a "only in wells run" thing.

Some old ASM would be the last thing I read, which I didn't like either really. I'm in the middle of the Clone saga. My favorite era was '70s to '80s. Who cares? I mean it isn't that big of a deal compared to anything else from this run like you said, but it's not in character, it's not funny, and it's also not appropriate in the context.

It’d be off brand for Peter to get with another superhero. They need to be a normie. Even though Chat’s a mutant, she isn’t a superhero. She’s ultimately still a normie even with her powers.

You could probably get away with making Betty a hapa. Her design wouldn’t need to be tweaked much at all. Maybe slant the eyes a bit but that’s it. Something like pic related.

Just make Spider-Man cool again. If they wrote him like he used to be, or just a brainier Yusuke Urameshi, then he’ll be cool again. Socially awkward nerds aren’t cool, they’re lame. Short tempered smart guys with the mouth to match are cool and more interesting.

Was Chat’s mysterious sister supposed to be Squirrel Girl? It’d make sense since she, like Spidey, was created by Steve Ditko.

Living in a comic book must be like being in Groundhog Day, living the same day over and over. Especially since their autistic readers can't stand change.

    >Reset it all back to Ditko-Lee
That's exactly the problem with modern Spider-Man. Editors think keeping Peter a teenager is a good thing.

      Anonymous

That’s because they take the wrong lesson from Ditko/Lee. 60/70’s Spider-Man was always growing. He graduated high school, he started college, he found a job, he found a girl, he moved out of his Aunts house. No matter what was happening it was always forward progress and forward momentum. They never let Peter suffer from arrested development like todays writers do. It wasn’t just Peter either. Flash, Gwen, Betty, Jameson, Harry and all the rest of the spider cast was allowed to grow and develop and change as the years went on. Villains were allowed to die or retire or reform. It felt believable cause they didn’t have to pull the reset button.

Hobgoblin in the 80s was the first chink in the armour. Then as soon as Peter’s robot parents showed up the book was cooked. If you read ASM after Maximum Carnage you’re only going to get suffering.

I would say that post-Maximum Carnage Spider-Man varies from okay to really bad, but is still preferrable over Byrne-era where there were excessive rollbacks (Sandman being a villain again, Flash Thompson being an butthole again. etc)

You have to remember that time moved foward much faster back then, since the silver age was the era where not everything was defined.

I've got another idea: Just end it already. Spiderman, Xmen, Justice League, all this shit, let it rest already. Come up with new stories. Do Sci-fi, fantasy, mystery thriller, whatever.

These IPs are brands known throughout the whole world. Especially Spider-Man. Spidey still rakes in billions from movies, games and merch. Shutting him down would be the dumbest thing they can do.

        Anonymous

Obviously I know that, but it's not always about the money. Like, take OP for a second. He said they should reboot it. Now let me ask you, will tomorrow it be announced that they will reboot Spiderman because a guy on Cinemaphile requested it?
If he can dream that it should be rebooted, i can dream that these zombie franchises can finally be allowed to rest.

The problem is that they’ve held on to the same exact continuity since the 60s. That will always be daunting for any newcomer to come into. Especially with how current writers ignore it and do their own thing anyway, inevitably confusing the readers who do want to go read the old stuff to catch up. Again, it’s just one of many issues that Marvel has. That and floppies. They’re too expensive, outdated and only nerds buy them. Newcomers like the graphic novel format. It’s more bang for their buck.
