Spider-Gwen and Miles are derivatives. Pete being friends with two people who have genuinely different vibes from him is compelling. Ice Man and Firestar are mutants, they have a history with the X-men, their own identities, their own stories of "coming out" as mutants. They share a lot in common with Peter, but they're also very different. That's good ground for a future series to explore, how *do* a pair of mutants feel about their non-mutant but equally despised buddy?
Gwen and Miles, by contrast, are just two different spins on the same core concept of Spider-Man. They're not *bad* characters, but they are defined by being Peter, but different.

I always liked the old school, Lee-Ditko era convention that Flash and Pete hate each other, but Flash fricking *loves* Spider-Man, which eventually leads to Pete reevaluating his animosity towards Flash. It was surprisingly nuanced writing for the era.

Yes, I caught a rerun recently and there were points where you could see the original Ice Man model underneath the Miles overlay. Also Gwen using "venom" powers super imposed over the existing fire effects is a really awkard fit. They can try to erase history, but the truth always finds a way.

It's a fricking show from the 80s. This wasn't some long running series that has been the cornerstone of Peter's life for decades. Peter's been working alongside Johnny Storm more than Ice Man and any assortment of female heroes more than Firestar. I know some people loved this series and Peter working with these two but is this really going to be the only reason this series is brought up now? Everything just loops back to Miles, even the stuff that happened decades before he was created? I need to start ignoring all Spider-Man threads. I already don't bother with the Spider-Boy threads for the same reason.

I rewatched this a few months back and it had such great character interactions despite the mediocre writing. The bants between the trio are especially solid. They feel like real friends.

The second season was 3 episodes long and the show consisted of 24 episodes max. Compare that to any other beloved Spider-Man cartoon. If it did well more seasons would have been made it's that simple.
You have to also consider that a lot of writers actually just enjoy tormenting characters they like. They want to put them through shit with stakes.

One thing that doesn't get said enough Firestar is that she's like really really strong when cutting loose. She just typically doesn't because she doesn't want to irradiate everything and everyone. Right now she's taking on The Sphinx, a cosmic level foe that even the F4 needed to get Galactus to deal with. Granted Nova also helped out and ultimately they needed to get some plot to take him down so it's not like she was solo overpowering him. But still. Was pretty cool. She should really go to space.

Wade's good when he's being written properly, i.e. as a pretty troubled dude who's *almost* a dark mirror to Peter. Pete uses humor to cope with his problems, Wade is basically nothing but Cope. He constantly fricks around and makes jokes because if he sits still for more than ten seconds, he realizes what an awful, horrible, loser of a human being he is. That is, naturally, a perfect foil for Spider-Man, who has a lot of doubts, but is ultimately still a heroic dude.
