Still the best capeshit film ever made. nothing has topped it before or since. It's influence is felt through not only later works like the MCU or DCEU now, but also Animation as a whole. The literal definition of a modern classic.

Fricking how? Most of the characters do literally glorified cameos to sell funko pops, and even Kingpin's part is basically Mr. Freeze lazily retooled for multiverse synergy.

Nicholas cage as Noir strangely works. Only sad thing is that Noir became a joke character.

    Spider-Ham fricking nailed it.

Miles for the first time is actually a character.

Peni is basically anime memes instead of anime references.

I like old Peter, but understand if you don't.

Gweb is a tough cookie, she steals a little too much screen time which pokes holes in the plot. Why did she go to Miles School, by the way Miles won a lottery to get into. Why did she become an intern after landing in another universe. Why wasn't she experience symptoms like Old peter. But I guess I like the tweaks they made compared to her comic book counterpart.

The issues with Gwen probably stem from rewrites, as she was not planned to have such a prominent role until an exec insisted on it. Then again the other spider-people from other universes are mostly window dressing.

"Precognition sense" doesn't explain why she failed to go help the actual Spider-Man at the time, got directed to a guy who's yet to become a spider-person, and how she got into the school at all and went there for a week or something, all without disintegrating, and then never had precognitive sense again.

This is what fixed it for me. Miles was such a shit-heel character prior to this. They actually gave him a reason to be his own spiderman instead of some weird insistence that miles is THE spiderman over Peter Parker. Same thing happened with FemThor.

When female Thor and Black Spider-Man were made, they were made knowing there was going to be a backlash. They fill the book with scenes or characters saying "Wow, you truly are the (Spider-Man, Thor)" in fact more than the original.

After getting delivered via truck into gwen stacy's dimension Dock Ock finds herself at the mercy at multiversal atom decay. Wanting to avoid this she teams up with that universe's version of dock ock to superior spider-man herself into gwen stacy.

Superior spider-gwen then rebuilds the collider tech and forms a cabal of a multi-dimensional sinister six with the goal of merging realities and creating Loomworld from the comics. Choosing to do so in her original reality, distracting miles with "hang outs" whilst her minions build the machines required to merge realities.

Multiversal sinister six includes a scary take on spot and the prowler who peter will try to reconnect with.

The machines accidentally destroy dimensions and tear apart worlds in the process. Enter Spider-man 2099 desperate to get the bottom of this and save reality. Believing miles to be responsible due to his presence at the epicentre of all this and how portals seem to surround him.

Miles must now get to the bottom of the multiversal destruction, Being lead astray by gwen along the way. Miles teams up with the spider people from the original. Peter B Parker accidentally takes his child daughter along with him. Penny has now gone full angsty neon genesis evangelion. Porker and Noir are mostly the same.

To counter mile's team and the multiversal sinister six Miguel forms his own team featuring a heavy metal hobie brown, exclusively japanese speaking Supaida-man, an australian ashley barton to rip on mad max, Sapient spider mobile played by david hasselhoff and spider-monkey.

The two teams fighting against each other serves as a distraction for the sinister six.

The end of the film comes with the reveal of gwen secretly being dock ock and loom world succesfully being created leaing into part two.

The Spiderverse part of it remains my only issue with it. It's a great story about mentor(s) with striking visuals, I just don't think the multiverse aspect and the characters that came from it added anything of value narratively (except for Peter B. but they could have just had him be Miles' universe Spidey given how little screen time Peter A. gets).

Don't like the celebration of the commercial aspect of Spider-Man. Also immensily bored with the Multiverse concept especially when other Spider-Men are just boring archetypes. King Pin was shit. Peter falls way too much onto that loser image Twittertards and most of Cinemaphile who haven't actually read Spider-Man but shill the Raimi movies love. The third act battle is color puke and I would have prefered if we didn't get to "Oh but if they lose the whole multiverse is going to explode" schtick. Spider-Man works better when the battle is more personal and low stake compared to other heroes where every day there is another world ender on the horizon. It's just a bog standard kids film with the artstyle wanting to immitate comics. Didn't care for Penny. Didn't care for Gwen. Didn't care for Noir. Didn't care for Miles. Didn't care for Miles' super underdeveloped uncle. Peter was the highlight but that's not saying much considering how much worse everything else was in terms of writing. What the frick is up with people wanting Spider-Man to be like Batman including having a bat cave, a buttler and a bat family.

overrated, most spider-people are jus 2-dimensional character, take out the flashy animation and it's alright, lietrally replace spider-man symbol with superman, flash or any big ip and it would make no difference, this is why it doesnt feel uniquely spider-man to me also worst version of peter parker.
      but i agree with this
this movie jus feels like away to commercialise the brand, the lack of thought and depth to each spider-persona, the main theme that anyone can be spider-man which flanderises even more that spider-man is self insert and it intoducing the boring trope that "anybody can be this x hero", like in thor 4 where anyone can be thor, it jus feels a shill way for corporate to make this white character ip inclusive to minorities without corprate bothering to put effort on their own uniuqe ip and it shows. Miles supporting cast is weak and is highly dependent on other spider-people compare to peter who has a strong supporting cast that isnt tied to being alternate version of his ip, so how will new writers try to differentiate miles with peter when miles movies are dependent on alternate spider-man, while peter isnt? even miles love intrest being gwen was a big mistake, if you're gonna chose spider-people anya wouldve been better, atleast it would differentiate miles from peter

I like how Bum Peter was consistently competent as Spider-Man but let the Peter Parker side of his life get out of control. It helps to sell the idea that he not only has to maintain the responsibilities of Spider-Man, but also the responsibilities of Peter Parker. Because if he goes to far with either side it’ll end up making him miserable

  25. 2 years ago

    fricking sucks

1.Noir Spider-man isn't like that at all and this movie just flanderized him
2.Peni was an unnecessary character and didn't need to be included at all
3.The idea of spider-gwen just all around sucks, Peter should never have to see gwen in any way shape or form considering it was a major point in his character
    4.Concept art style was cooler
5.Spider-man in a team scenario is lame
6.Multiverse shit is so over used and sucks
7.Miles isn't interesting and I will never care about him, Spider-man is a story about Peter Parker and everything we see of him is his character growing and adapting to his unique circumstance which just cannot be replicated and seeing anyone else in the suit feels like a bunch of people trying to sell me something.

most versions of high school peter parker wouldn't really give a frick about their social lives if they weren't bullied, but Miles cares a lot more about the expectations of his peers. I also think him being creative instead of a nerd is unique while still allowing him to be a loser

          Anonymous

There's barely anything in the movie that has to do with his peers, it's no different than how he was in the comics, the sequels seem to be ignoring that point completely, and that's something you can easily do with Peter if you wanted to (because it presented a storytelling opportunity, which it doesn't)

Honestly the first half is great but the second half isn't as interesting. Miles' character feels like he lost a lot of agency and got rewritten to fit Peter B's presence and arc rather than have Peter B service Miles' arc. Gwen doesn't really have any true narrative closure other than a fight scene, and the third act is a little rushed. Kingpin isn't all that engaging of a villain and Lady Ock kinda just got written out.

6.5/10, not bad. I'd recommend the workprint Alternate Universe Cut.

I rewatched it recently, in fact!

It really does not hold up on rewatch. Unless you "Turn off your brain", you're gonna notice on the second go round that Gwen's entire subplot is a giant plothole due to her being there first day of class, contradicting Mile's entire problem of the school being hard to get in, and just not making any sense later. Worse, on second rewatch, it really hits home that Miles just didn't win his final fight with Kingpin. Straight up, did not win. The only reason he came out on top? Kingpin froze, let him set up his attack, and then let him go through with it. It's kind of insulting on second go round, like they had the whole script written and just forgot to write in how Miles overcomes him, so he doesn't. Kingpin freezes like a video game boss glitching out and that's the only reason he doesn't die. It's nonsensical, it's not a fun twist, and it just kind of sours the whole accomplishment. If the main villain literally has to stand there and stare for your hero to win, you kind of failed to develop your hero. Speaking of lack of development, wow does it hit that the spiders are just random in the story. They don't develop even a little, they don't even really have a defined character, they just drop in and quip and then act like its a sad scene when they leave.

There's a bunch of things wrong with it besides that, like how nonsensical the dinner party is and how it contradicts Kingpins entire character up to that point and the bizarre choice to act like the mech dying is a sad scene, but those things just kind of wreck the story on rewatch because in addition to them not making any sense, you're losing out on potentially good things just to get them. Overall, I see why most people skipped this one and it made less than half of the Garfield movies, it's really only for people who wouldn't think about it after they watched it.

The animation is fine. It's not something you see often these days and helps the movie stand out.

The artstyle works. It's suitably cartoony without going over-the-top and it's reliance on a more comic bookesque aesthetic really helps it stand out.

The story definately has its holes (Gwen being present for the first day of this supposedly hard-to-enter school being one of the main ones), and it's definately a popcorn movie first and foremost.

The Spiders are fun and have good synergy with each other though that comes at the expense of Peter and Miles being the only ones to get any real character development.

Gwen's fun too, but she takes up way too much screentime for what she ends up accomplishing.

Spider-Verse Miles is the best version of Miles we've gotten but he's still a dull, uninspired protagonist and by far the least interesting of the Spiders, and the movie would've benefitted from being from Peter B's perspective instead.

She time travels in the movie. We see her do it. Gwen arrests her fall after she's pushed out of the warp while Both Peters, Peni, and Ham violently stop against a wall/billboard. I don't know what you're complaining about here. You seem to be upset on how someone can travel 20 miles in under an hour when they have access to a car. I don't get what you're whining about.
                >The glitching seems to happen in waves but there is no indication of anyone dying after 24 hours. No time frame was given for death. and All Spiders spend about 2 days in 1610 besides Gwen.
                >Gwen is watching a report on Alchemax with Oliva who is specifically the concept of parallel dimensions. She snuck into this class because the information was relevant to her current problem. She was five seconds to stealing Liv's computer before Miles + Peter beat her to it.
                >Miles was moving into his dorm which is why he packed a suitcase of clothes, he's still complaining about wanting to go to his old school. He has 1st day jitters because he knows no one. Uncle Aaron asks him about his 1st day when he meets him that evening.
                >Miles has no direct control over his powers let alone his camo ability at this point in the story. You can accept that Miles could evade detection by using the vents but Gwen who is in her PRIME could not. Baffling.

Anon next time instead of being objectively, provably in the wrong, try being objectively provably in the right like I am, it will do wonders for your arguments

Your arguments are flimsy a best, and straight moronic at worst. I can't help you.

They aren't arguments, it's evidence easily seen or heard in the movie, unlike your posts which are literally made up shit and cope.

a week earlier than everyone else somehow before the thing even happens
Noir is from the 30s or 40s, how is HE off your radar on that?

            see

            >it's not, you are making shit up because you are coping and know you are wrong in fact Olivia says the parallel universes are happening at the exact same time meaning there is no time travel involved and Noir is just from a universe that's ~60 years late
            >the movie very clearly depicts all the Spider-Men starting to glitch out a day after their arrival whereas Gwen survived for a week
            >we see her land in Manhattan where logically Spider-Man would be patrolling whereas Miles is in Brooklyn, she says she only went to the school because her spider-sense told her so even though Miles wasn't yet bitten when we first see her in the school
            >again making shit up because you are wrong, nowhere is it said it's the first day of school and in fact the people greeting Miles on his way ask him how school is going and say the hood misses him, and the physics teacher tells him he's late again and he gets a test back meaning he's been attending for a while and we see Gwen attend on at least two separate days
            >they were sneaking around the vents while Miles was invisible, whereas Gwen was very obviously out of place as a tiny 14 year old girl wandering the halls with no ID

            >Olivia says the parallel universes are happening at the exact same time meaning there is no time travel involved and Noir is just from a universe that's ~60 years late
That tracks with how it works in the comics where there is no time travel involved in multiverses, they are all parallel, it's just that certain universes started earlier or later than others

Knowing that this is Bendis' cuck self-insert fantasy flirting with a version of Peter's tragically lost ex based on Stan Lee's wife skeeves me the frick out, this shit is what they present to little kids as wholesome romance?

wait Gwen is based on Joan?

holy shit now i understand why Stan was pissed when they killed Gwen Stacy when it happened in the comics.

It can. It gets annoying when people like you praise a kids movie for doing the most basic shit in film

I didn’t praise it, you made an imaginary scenario where some annoying man baby is praising it. It looks nice is all I’ll say

You projected that moronic "why aren't shots allowed to be cool" here so don't pretend like I'm talking about imaginary scenarios, moron.

You didn't say and so what though. Are you perhaps illiterate so you don't understand the meaning of language and how to use it? Perhaps that is why you constantly see something that isn't there while doing it yourself like a moronic monkey? Perhaps an english course would help you instead of using childish cartoon images to convey your annoyances with how you word things lmao

I thought it was pretty decent, but probably wouldn't have gone out of my way to see it if not for the fact that the rest of my family wanted to see it.

Even back then I was burnt out on superhero and kids' movies.
