It's an easy common tragedy with a sympathetic victim to play on the "THIS IS REAL" conceit of analog horror.

No it was pretty common in previous creepy pastas. Have you forgotten Ben Drowned, Mr. Bear's Cellar, I mean FRICK Slender Man's orginal MO is just creepy supernatural kidnapper. I'd probably blame IT more than anything because that really codified the cliche.....well I mean I guess blame John Wayne Gacy more than anything.

Frick, that one brings me back. I remember 1999 being one of the few Creepypastas I remembered fondly. Perhaps it hasn't aged as well nowadays, but I'll have to read it again.
Wendigoon and Meat Canyon have a podcast where they go through it. It's not terrible but it really gives away the goat in the clumsiest way possible pretty early on. Like "Yeah it's just a satanic methed up schizo and he murdered a whole bunch of kids exactly like this."

It's not that I don't believe it could happen it's just they tell you everything you need to know about the guy via second hand accounts from some goober where it probably would've been a better slow burn of recognizing what the guy is going for via the tapes.
