I like the movie's philosophical discussions and it's superior to Solaris. Both are boring, but I almost fell asleep watching the latter. I don't know why Tarkovsky made these movies considering how much he despised science fiction in general (2001 being a famous example of one he despised) outside exceptions like Terminator.
What is the point of the shit filters. Blade Runner re-releases also suffer similar issues. Criterion releases are usually good so what happened.
People thinking they know better than the person who made the film
Tarkovsky himself admitted Solaris was a failure, because it focused too much on the sci-fi elements. He said he wanted to use sci-fi as a framing device to then get to the deeper, meaningful questions actually worth exploring.
If you read his Terminator quote in context, you’ll see he’s not being kind to the film, filmmaker, or audience as you might initially think.
My guess is that because Terminator has actual characters with arcs and emotions compared to 2001 (which he deplored as cold and lacking of humanity) and it's vision of the future is more in line with Tarkovsky's cynicism of the failing of men. No wonder he liked it.
I do agree with Tarkovsky that Solaris 72 is better than 2001 in regards to having characters with depth and emotion. But I love sci fi novels, so I can forgive Kubrick and Arthur C Clarke for writing empty shells.

Everything Tarkovsky made was just as cold and detached as Kubrick. I don't know how he could bash the inhumanity of 2001 when it was clearly a deliberate choice to play up the anti-technology angle of the story, he does the exact same thing in Solaris with the 5 minute long highway scene.
There is a reason that HAL is the most emotional character in the movie.
I heard part of the reason the highway scene is in Solaris is because most Soviet civilians never saw a highway back home and seeing one came off as futuristic.

You should have picked two images from the same scene. The movie itself plays around with the colour palette.
It goes from mostly black and white in the outside world (left) to very colorful inside the zone (right). That image is a terrible comparison because of this.

This is a new transfer that just came out in the 5 film tarkovsky box set by luminier publishing
there's an italian transfer which doesn't have the piss filter. but glad that the criterion is getting more definitively replaced.

The upload on Mosfilm's youtube channel has the opening credits over a scene that's practically blue, rather than yellow. Later in the stalker's apartment, the colour shifts to a subtle brown.
