Famously, Werner Herzog loves Wrestlemania. He doesn't watch WWE every week, but he really enjoys catching the big performance once a year. Similarly, I suspect Kubrick probably wasn't a guy watching every Arnold flick to come out, but did see True Lies and thought it was clever and fun.

Beer commercials looking like visual poetry was just executives and ad makers having conference meetings where they lay out everything - "10 sec of airtime was bought for 2 mil on 3 channels. i remember reading an interview about the commercials and kubrick specifically talks about a women talking on the phone (the michelob ad) and how she hangs up, the mystery of what she was talking about. that's what he's talking about, it was a sexy women hanging up the phone in a way that seemed like anger but you weren't sure. execs definitely want to push their brand in a positive light but as someone else pointed out here, the directors sneak in a bit more here and there.

Most of his films are top quality propaganda pieces disgued as arthouse cinema and there's no denying his skill as a director and compositional storyteller. That being said, I found 2001 to be one of his weakest pieces. The effects are good, but the subtlety of his later works is missing and the story is full of holes.
You forgot to mention that the last third is basically nothing but a dude breathing heavy in a space suit. I could not fricking finish that movie because of the excessive amount of male heavy breathing. The waltz music during space scenes was also grating on my ears. All this after I made myself watch the whole thing for once because I had gotten filtered by the weird ass opening scene of dudes in gorilla costumes.

Most of his films are top quality propaganda pieces disgued as arthouse cinema and there's no denying his skill as a director and compositional storyteller. That being said, I found 2001 to be one of his weakest pieces. The effects are good, but the subtlety of his later works is missing and the story is full of holes.
You forgot to mention that the last third is basically nothing but a dude breathing heavy in a space suit. I could not fricking finish that movie because of the excessive amount of male heavy breathing. The waltz music during space scenes was also grating on my ears. All this after I made myself watch the whole thing for once because I had gotten filtered by the weird ass opening scene of dudes in gorilla costumes.
I get that it was the first time somebody made model shots of space ships look real and that's why boomers have a sentimental attachment to that movie. But it really sucks nowadays and is one of his weaker movies. Barry Lyndon is GOAT Kubrick kino imo. 2001 blows chunks.
