Kubrick, unlike his fans, actually isn't a elitist pretentious tosser and appreciated films for what they were.

True Lies was also the last great action blockbuster of an era(don't start telling me about The Matrix, I don't care how much you liked it)

        Anonymous

Box office was the most important indicator of a film's success to Kubrick, he didn't care about reviews. For a short period he must have felt like he'd cracked the code on it with 2001 and ACO, but then his takes fell off and was completely eclipsed by the likes of Spielberg and Lucas, who's brains he picked a lot trying to figure out what their secret was.

        Based.

I was in the gym yesterday listening to “My Unbelievably True Life Story” (Arnie’s autobiography) for the 50th time (although I usually stop when he gets married and resisted to the California golden era) and he described almost falling off a building from the horse stunt. I should watch True Lies again.

He was mostly a loner autist in his private life but I've heard a lot of stories where he would call other professionals in the industry and have long conversations with them about inane stuff. He just wanted filmbros to talk shit with but was too much of an enigmatic recluse to be on the LA scene.

Don't joke. Next analysis theme trend just dropped among the Stanleygays.

But Russell Mulcahey tells a similar story about talking to Spielberg who rang him up out of nowhere after he'd seen Razorback and just peppered him with questions about how he achieved a number of effects.

This is just what israelites do. Someone else innovates and they get VERY interested in the hows and whys.

True Lies is dogshit (FRICK YOU, it's trash) but it's full of "firsts" in regards to digital FX (mixed with top grade physical modelwork) and certain unique lighting techniques (did you know JC had his own custom LIGHT GLOBES/filaments made to get his signature "Blue" in his mid-career movies? No, you didn't. So FRICK YOU).

Stanley was not asking about LE AWESOME moron GOYSLOP ACTION ADVENTURE, he was hitting him up on all the technical stuff.

Imagine being Kubrick in that meeting and having to be all like "damn, James Cameron, you frickin' talented, all impressive with your slick effects and horrific blockbuster popcorn flick. I would totally watch your movies, both my character and the real me." when all he really wants to do is watch another Fellini film in his English Country Manor. Like seriously imagine having to be Kubrick and not only sit in that chair while James Cameron flaunts his disgusting flick in front of you, the favorable lighting barely concealing his Spielbergian direction and lowest common denominator appeal, and just sit there, take after take, hour after hour, while he perfected that talk.

            The duality of Kubrick...

He might have also just enjoyed it. There's a tendency to think that people who produce "high art" don't enjoy more popular stuff, but that's just not true. Famously, Werner Herzog loves Wrestlemania. He doesn't watch WWE every week, but he really enjoys catching the big performance once a year. Similarly, I suspect Kubrick probably wasn't a guy watching every Arnold flick to come out, but did see True Lies and thought it was clever and fun.

True Lies is blockbuster trash but in the 90's everything Cameron was doing was cutting edge from the technical side. Kubrick started making films in the 40's, T2 and True Lies must've looked like black magic to him

                Anonymous

This. Kubrick was also fascinated with beer ads in the 80s. How the lighting was set up, how so much was conveyed in 30 seconds,
                >"Forget what they’re doing — selling beer — and it’s visual poetry. Incredible eight-frame cuts. And you realize that in thirty seconds they’ve created an impression of something rather complex. If you could ever tell a story, something with some content, using that kind of visual poetry, you could handle vastly more complex and subtle material."

                Anonymous

For all the intellectual weight that Kubrick seemed to carry with him, he was very pedantic and always tried to find roundabout ways to explain these things. Beer commercials looking like visual poetry was just executives and ad makers having conference meetings where they lay out everything - "10 sec of airtime was bought for 2 mil on 3 channels. Make it as slick as possible - maybe shots of a sexy woman in a casino- then a guy comes to the bar and gets a Michelob and she gets all excited and make the beer bottle look sexy". This is exactly the conversation that goes on in advertising conference meetings. The people who make and edit them are just puppets taking notes from executives. Kubrick thinking this is visual poetry when it was actually directed by some homosexual yuppie in a suit to make drinking Michelob beer look sexy to women so it gets more sales is the height of Kubrick's pseudo intellectual pretension. The guy never was straightforward like James Cameron. In a Cameron film, what you see is what you get. No subtext intended. Stanley on the other hand tries to find subtext and artistry even in the most obnoxious commercial ads. SK just comes across as a pampered primadonna sometimes.

                Anonymous

                >a pampered primadonna
Who extols the virtues of low culture beer commercials and White Men Can't Jump. You can't have it both ways. If he only talked about high brow shit like Wild Straberries he's pretentious. If he talks about beer ads he's a pampered primadonna. Kubrick filters people the same way that Nabokov and Joyce did: by consuming high and low culture and finding interesting things in all of it.
                >In a Cameron film, what you see is what you get. No subtext intended.
Can't tell if this a compliment of a diss on Cameron. His movies make a big splash and then fade fast exactly for this reason while Kubrick still casts a long shadow even though he's been dead for 25 years.

                Anonymous

Actual ad industry gay here, you’re not wrong about the executive level but the people who then have to execute on that usually have dreams of doing something more meaningful - people like Ridley Scott and David Fincher started out directing ads, don’t forget that.

                Anonymous

i remember reading an interview about the commercials and kubrick specifically talks about a women talking on the phone (the michelob ad) and how she hangs up, the mystery of what she was talking about. that's what he's talking about, it was a sexy women hanging up the phone in a way that seemed like anger but you weren't sure. execs definitely want to push their brand in a positive light but as someone else pointed out here, the directors sneak in a bit more here and there.

                Anonymous

No, Kubrick was a real highbrow and didn't mind taking inspiration from disreputable sources. Don DeLillo is also big on commercials. The best minds have no problem enjoying brazenly commercial art. Meanwhile midwits sneer at "slop" while hailing Citizen Kane as the best film ever.

He's got a point. There's a reason ad directors like the Scott brothers, Michael Bay, Adrian Lyne, Gore Verbinski, and David Fincher were all able to successfully pivot from ads to feature films

I heard Hitler had a israeli girl chained up in his bunker during the last years of the war and would regularly torture her to lick the tears off her face. When the Russians started shelling Berlin at his birthday, he tortured her to death by wrapping her in a big blanket made of human skin taken from her parents and then humped it, but couldn’t achieve a proper orgasm, because he only has one half of a testicle. He then beat her to death and burned her.

      2001 is grossly over-rated.

Idk the movie still looks beautiful, well shot, and the ending still creeps people out 60 years later

Most of his films are top quality propaganda pieces disgued as arthouse cinema and there's no denying his skill as a director and compositional storyteller. That being said, I found 2001 to be one of his weakest pieces. The effects are good, but the subtlety of his later works is missing and the story is full of holes.

You forgot to mention that the last third is basically nothing but a dude breathing heavy in a space suit. I could not fricking finish that movie because of the excessive amount of male heavy breathing. The waltz music during space scenes was also grating on my ears. All this after I made myself watch the whole thing for once because I had gotten filtered by the weird ass opening scene of dudes in gorilla costumes.

I get that it was the first time somebody made model shots of space ships look real and that's why boomers have a sentimental attachment to that movie. But it really sucks nowadays and is one of his weaker movies. Barry Lyndon is GOAT Kubrick kino imo. 2001 blows chunks.

Tarkovsky was always a dumbass snob. The irony of your image is that 2001 ASO was one of the earliest inspirations for James Cameron in getting obsessed with filmmaking when he was a teenager. He tracked down Jerome agel's book on 2001 after seeing it.

French Farces can be pretty painful. But it would make for a curios comparison video at least.

      >Yep, Stanley Kubrick himself apparently wanted Schwarzenegger to play the character 'Animal Mother' in his Vietnam epic 'Full Metal Jacket'. The part would eventually go to actor Adam Baldwin. 'I didn't have time to do it'

I love when directors make cuck authors seethe and kubrick did it best. stephen king was eternally exposed for the fraud that he is when people ended up liking kubrick's shining way more.

gene wilder also did it to roald dahl with willy wonka. wilder basically came and said, do it my way or i'm not doing it at all. dahl was pissed

    >Jim, this is fantastic. I've never seen such raw sexuality rendered cinematically like this. The gyration of her hips, how the light catches the musculature of her linebacker buttocks...really outstanding stuff. Jim, I need a breakdown of your lighting setup for this sequence, what types of lenses you used, and detailed specs on the fabric, size, and model of the thong she's wearing.

Some of you guys are fricked in the head. Kubrick actually was just interested in how the film was made.

Wasn't Kubrick also obsessed with Spoorloos? He wanted to talk with the director about the editing of the film
