Should have take out Joff for Stannis and than usurp him.

Show would have ended if Renly just kept his mouth shut about his entitlement to the throne for just a few hours until he and Ned secured Joffrey

it was the Tyrells who pushed him.

      Renly is fricked either way.
if he wins, some younger and more popular guy will overthrow him down the line due to the precedence he set. Anyone with an army can make a grab for the throne now. Even Aegon the Conquerer didn't do that. He kept the local nobility intact and didn't depose anyone except those he had to.

        Anonymous

The Baratheons didn't claim the throne by right of conquest, they claimed it as the closest living relatives of the Targaryen dynasty.
And there wouldn't be a guy more popular than Renly down the line - making friends and getting the smallfolk to love him is like Renly's only skill.

But it WAS the best season.
The low budget meant they had to shoot more indoor scenes with great actors like Sean Bean giving them more dialogue and adapting closely the verbose pages of the first book.
For this reason it was obviously the season with least difference from the book.
The armours had more vibrant colors, same as the settings and the filter they used now looks a bit corny but it was miles better than the pitch black brightness of the later seasons.
And last but not least, the 10 episodes long build up to the Lannister-Stark war and the Night's Watch expedition beyond the wall felt amazing.
Unreal how good this show was in the first seasons. And what's worse is that the last seasons retroactively destroyed these too.

Season 2 already showed that the writers just can't do without inserting their own ideas, and we're lucky that for that season the biggest change was the Arya-Tywin scenes at Harrenhal. It wasn't a bad change per se, the subplot kinda worked and didn't ruin the season, but it was nevertheless a foreshadowing of the BAD changes that will come when given liberty to inept screenwriters.

season 1 has the best dialogs. that conservation between lord varys and eddard in the dungeon is probably the best in the entire show.

I never got what fricking moral compass these characters were working off of. On the one hand everyone makes a big deal of a king's unshakeable legitimacy and Joffrey could be disposed simply because he wasn't Robert's biological son even though he had been named heir and Robert was the FIRST new non-Targ king on the throne so there was no precedent for having the throne beyond Right Makes Right, then Stannis says he is owed the throne because as the next brother in line it should go to him, but then Renly says people wouldn't like him so he should be allowed to be king, and meanwhile all the other houses aren't questioning why the Baratheons/Lannisters get to be king forever simply because Robert was the first one in the throne room when they killed the last Targ.

There's no way such a chaotic poorly defined power structure could persist. This whole setting is so dumb.

They're not, they're working off of the desire to rule the kingdom. This is probably the easiest to understand aspect of the story.

They don't rule shit. There is no royal army, every house is totally independent and rules their own lands. The king has to beg for loans from the houses and foreign banks (lmao) to fund anything. There is zero benefit to being king of the seven kingdoms, you only have real power over your house's lands and kings landing, and the fact the first succession conflict completely broke the system apart with just the slightest amount of strain.

Being king is the worst thing you can do because all it does is make you a target of other stupid houses who are going after the crown.

        It's a stupid setting.

Yes, but having a unified Seven Kingdoms as a political entity controlling all of Westeros south of the wall for 300 years has lead to huge leaps in development, like all the roads and shit. Even the army sizes grow larger thought the targaryen dynasty. Imagine England developing into United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, now imagine that as a continent.

Alot of it had to do he had conspirators sabotaging him along the way. Why you think he hired Ned to be his Hand? He knew Jon Arryn killed by his enemies, so only his most loyal friend he could trust anymore.

The King will belong to a major house and therefore have major support from at least one Kingdom while the King can act in the interests of his house.

though in general without dragons, completely controlling the seven kingdoms won't be possible and being King will probably become more and more of a ceremonial and prestige thing like the emperor of the HRE which with the ending of the show having the king be voted on also reinforces the similarity.

Have you ever read about medieval Europe? Before french and English monarchies centralised their kingdoms, it worked exactly like that. And it worked like that for centuries after in Germany.

the biological son thing is moronic, you've got to admit. There were no dna test at the time, so the father was the husband of the mother and that's all.

In 1183, Humphrey de Toron married 11 year old Isabella of Jerusalem while Saladin besieged their castle. A portion of the feast was sent out to Saladin and he in turn halted the catapults so the newlyweds could enjoy their wedding night.

I still get all warm and cozy by the fact that Stannis respected Ned so much for what he did and was even going to be lenient towards Robb because of it
