15 million Bajorans died in the occupation, and Bajor's total population is 3.8 billion. Which means annual rate of occupation-related deaths is 1 out of every 12,666 Bajorans per year. That's less then the holocaust death rate which was 1 out of every 1,533 humans per year. Seems like a fair trade for the advancement of the Bajorian people by the just and great Cardassian government

Does Starfleet punish or arrest people for questioning the number of Bajoran deaths?

Doubtful, most would consider it a controversial theory on recent history but not carw since they're not Bajoran and knows nothing about Bajoran history. It's more like questioning how many people died during the Japanese occupation of Manchuria. They might find your critical thinking skills lacking and not give you more responsibility of course since the occupation of Bajor is fairly well documented even by the Cardassians

The actual conflict is that Gul Dukat was in charge of the occupation so he took responsibility for that project. He was proud of the work they did and felt like it was more humane than just killing everyone. But he is also a scheming, egotistical butthole. In summary, he's a complicated character. Shouldn't have turned into Space Hitler when fans began to like him but he was always going to end up destroying himself with his ego. But morons on Cinemaphile just post that he did nothing wrong to get replies, which is worse than ignoring the show entirely. Get a life, and it should worry you that a fan of Star Trek is saying this.

            Anonymous

Dukat never cared about being humane. The occupation wasn't about being humane. It was about being the god of a space plantation of laborers and sex slaves.

This is a real possibility, hence my comment about Gul Dukat being an egotistical butthole. But he's good at justifying his actions like a leader/politician would be.

The two thousand year old word of god transcribed after a thousand years then split into multiple contradictory interpretations all of which contradict themselves therein. I won’t argue for literal interpretation or a lack of flaws with you. Christian people are good people who do good expecting nothing in return but peace in death. Atheists and other deists are degenerate and self serving. It doesn’t matter if it’s real. It will make you better

Nah. Picard is the reason to watch the show. Everyone else is support cast, even in their near solo episodes. Data is the next most interesting character and the rest of them are a little too Meh, to comment on. I cringe a little typing this but even O'Brien is more interesting than most of the rest of the cast combined. They all have their moments but for being consistently interesting it's Picard, Data and O'Brien. B. Crusher is sometimes interesting as is Troy. Worf is sometimes interesting but then we get those awful bog down episodes with him and his son Alexander. Westly Crusher is sometime interesting but comes off as too much of a dweeb instead of a young man.

The real problem with the entire franchise of Star Trek is it was always trying to be a mix of Woke For It's Day crossed with the Space Navy. (The creator and writers seriously admit this if you listen to them.) When the crew acts like a real navy in space it's a great show. When they act like space pussies/goodeytwoshoes, it's a cringe show.

woke was invented after occupy. 60s/90s "progressive" was about setting aside differences. Woke is about focusing on them.

It was a flawed episode with a weird moral antithetical to the rest of the series, with characters behaving like buttholes for no reason.

The only way to explain it is that Q 'cheated' and transported him to a universe where not only Picard was flawed but so were the rest of the crew.

well maybe it was trying to show Jean-Luc's influence on his subordinates at the same time. Yes he is different for not being in command but also everyone else is different for not being commanded and mentored by Jean-Luc.

obviously not, that performance review was just Picard being told about blue shirt Picard's performance, its not like they were evaluating his performance in that moment. In some ways that day was a one when blue shirt Picard genuinely could have shown his ability to command had there been some emergency like when Troi has to assume bridge command. However in blue shirt Picard's timeline, that day when he was literally captain material passed by uneventful resulting in what could've been his last chance to ever prove he wasn't a loser passing by without anyone noticing.

The reason Riker's character seems useless as the show goes on is that as RLM says his character arc technically ends at the end of season 3, "The Best of Both Worlds" which refers to Riker having attained "the best of both worlds" after Picard has been kidnapped, being captain of the Enterprise. But when they save Picard and he declines promotion to captain of another ship to remain first mate, his character goes back to square one and never develops. Stewart was thinking about leaving the show but ultimately doesn't.

Seriously, yo.... I'm binging TNG now and so far all I'm seeing is Picard hiding in the ready room with his Earl Grey Tea, or sitting in the chair saying "Engage"

All the while, when it come to the actual day to day duties of the ship's operation, it's Riker that's basically being the Captain telling everyone what to do.

The real mvp and literal heavy lifter is Data. He's the lynchpin and literal difference between life and death nearly every single episode, even after he's nerfed a bit. The crew would have died a hundred times if Data wasn't with them.

          Anonymous

Riker's real purpose was to be handsome and charming for the women at home to swoon over. The same character played by an ugly or mid actor probably wouldn't have been as well liked.
Data is my favorite character but the writers leaned a bit too heavily on him for an easy conflict resolution. Like if you tallied up each crew members' Ws over 7 seasons they would be 90% shared by Picard and Data.

Nobody loves the characters until they watch a dozen episodes of them

In most cases but The Big Goodbye was an excellent showcase for why the TNG cast is so loved.

As we speak, I am contacting my secret network of Starfleet captains across the galaxy and your warp signature is being traced right now so you better prepare for the ion storm, maggot. The ion storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're getting torpedoed, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can seduce you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my beard.

Not only am I extensively trained in Starfleet strategy, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United Federation of Planets and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable butt off the face of the galaxy, you little drone. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your plasma torpedoes.

But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn Klingon. I will photon torpedo fury all over you, and you will drown in it. You're banished from the holodeck, kiddo. Make it so, number one. Engage.

How old are you, dude? "Start at season 2 or 3" has been a thing with TV shows for decades. People even say to skip season 1 of the fricking Simpsons. If you like campy old sci-fi, start at TOS and just keep watching. If you don't, start at TNG season 2. It's not like you're modding Skyrim or something here, it's not that complicated.

        >the modern stuff is hard pressed to recreate
The 60s had the undercurrent of the space race and the scramble to develop post-WWII decolonized Global South type countries. Exploration and frontier type shows really clicked with the zeitgeist then.
In Current Year, exploration is more about data and information than physical space, at least in the mind of the zeitgeist. We barely know anything about the ocean. SeaQuest needs a gritty reboot. By which I mean the captain should be played by Gritty.

Watch the pilot and keep in mind it had a troubled production. Then skip to The Big Goodbye. If you're still not onboard with the cast then the show may not be for you. Star Trek and especially TNG is a very character focused show. If you don't love the characters, you won't care what happens to them. And that means there won't be any dramatic tension.

bs. TNG is worth watching from episode one. Just because a series doesn't immediately peak doesn't mean it's bad, and also those first episodes set up important plot points. Try and stop being an ADHD riddled zoomer moron.

And yes, you get into Trek by watching TNG, then DS9, followed by VOY or ENT (interchangable viewing order between those two imo). Then you can try and watch TOS if you want but be warned it is very, VERY dated. But the TOS movies are worth watching because of the heightened production values. Beyond that, don't bother. Watch JJ Trek movies if you want, they are watchable. Disc, Picard, Lower Decks are all irredeemable garbage.

TNG is better. It's just better in every way. The production values, the acting, the storylines. TOS is good but it's goofy and half the storylines are eyerollingly generic because they literally invented those tropes, but if you are a sci-fi fan you've seen them done better 1000 times. I think everyone should watch TOS but most people are just going to be put off trying to watch it as their first trek series.

Reminder that Roddenberry thought people in the 80s would be just like people in the 60s and accept a lot of camp and silliness with mediocre effects, which is why he thought the Ferengi would be the big bad Klingon-style villains of the series. Then he learned that 80s audiences were far more fickle.

    Faith of the heart—(RECORD SCRATCH)

Something in the moonlight catches my eye
The shadow of a lover goes dancing by
Looking for a little bit of love to grow, so
Give me love, give me heart and soul
You never let me cross to the other side now
I'm tied to the hope that you will somehow
Hard on the heels of something more
But I lost your love, heart and soul
The tear in my heart (more than an ocean)
    As you walk on by
I feel so low and your head is high
    Everything you do
Convinces me more (keeps us apart)
Please, give me love, give me heart and soul
Looking to the day when I saw your face
(I feel a tearing in half of my heart)
I wasn't in the running, I wasn't in the race
You moved in a way that I've known before
Now I want your love, heart and soul
Tired eyes, tears that dried (Leaving you ain't easy now)
On the bed, on the pillow (Loving you's the harder part)
    Where the love has died
A turn of the key (you never want me for myself)
    Through the door you go
Don't look back (now I've needed you)
    (Right from the very start)
    To hurt me more
Everything you said was to the point
Can't you try to (oh won't you even try to)
Give a little bit of heart and soul
Give a little bit of love to grow
Give a little bit of heart and soul
    And don't you make me
Beg for more (must I beg you?)
Give a sign, I need to know
A little bit of heart and soul

okay i've watched ds9 probably about 7 times completely and the last two runs have been on a CRT and if you're going to have to believe me here that everything about the visual elements of the show are made specifically for that form of display. it's the most cutting edge star trek i've ever seen visually; the washed out light/haze over almost everything in the show is actually luminance on a crt; the textures on the costume and makeup look SUPERB. everything they learnt in making TNG was doubled down on; i think it's why the show had a strong start regardless of the poor acting; that the visual effects and ambience would have shone so strongly. you absolutely must experience it if you can my fellow anons.

Surprising how La Forge wasn't given more to do early on if his actor was already famous. I think Burton got third billing after Stewart and Frakes, which would imply he was the third most important crewmate. Did he ever get more than 1 or 2 focal episodes per season?

He was supposed to get a lot more focus as the OMG BLIND PILOT HOW COOL IS THE FUTURE!!11!!eleven character, except I think that the costume made it practically difficult for him to deliver. The thing was legitimately blocking his vision. I am surprised he made his marks at all.

                >Actually in the future people aren't as concerned about achieving the high score.
Actually that’s all they care about. With no money, all anyone has is their career. Imagine an entire star system filled with pretentious yuppies all trying to outdo each other in everything. Every day has to be some monumental accomplishment. You went to Risa? Well I was busying designing a new weather system for poor underprivileged aliens in deep space. The Federation and especially Starfleet is just an endless stream of masturbatory oneupsmanship.

Yes, exactly so. Gordon was worried he was underachieving as a pilot (despite being probably the best pilot in the fleet) and so he tried for Command as a pro forma thing. Only to find out it wasn't for him.

That was due to limitations in cost to put a ships image on screen for CGI as well as their inexplicable "goodeytwoshoes," attitude toward star fleet. A more mature take on the series could easily have shown some humans taking a far more Imperial approach to galactic colonization vs. the non interventionist principle of the Enterprise/Star Fleet. That would mess up the narrative as well as be expensive to create, so they didn't pursue it.

          Anonymous

          >some humans taking a far more Imperial approach to galactic colonization

that was the muh key and mirror universe. both were about how such behavior wasn't sustainable when you can casually make planets uninhabitable.

            Anonymous

The Ma Ki were underpowered pussies. That was their hook. A non interventionist Federation would have a lot of trouble competing against one that relentlessly developed weapons and detection systems, cloaking systems, high redundancy colonies that were hard to find or get to, etc. Mirror, Mirror from TOS was a lot closer to a proper Imperial take, if a little ham fisted because it pushed a narrative of don't go pushing the little weaklings around. The borg episodes when they are disobedient, super powerful, remorseless cyborgs that capture or destroy what they want was some much needed horror in the star trek universe.
