Rodenberry was a clueless coomer. Star Trek isn't about anything, it's a serial wish fulfilment simulator for balding losers that were "too smart to succeed". The fact that the only successful Star Trek content with mass appeal is an adult cartoon proves that it really was never good to begin with.

TNG was wildly successful for a syndicated science fiction daytime tv show, competing with major network dramas, with a legacy that solidly places it amongst the best television shows of all time as you can see on basically any list

no one will ever know how popular streaming-only pickle trek actually is, and it'll be forgotten quicker than the original animated series

I liked how Quark put it, that these nice hoomans are the best but put them in terrible situations under a lot of stress and they turn into not so nice guys
DS9 should've been about this struggle, about war putting the best on their limit but at the same time show how unyielding humans are about their new found values, yes TNG had that in many episodes but the series wasn't about arcs or about a background conflict
instead we get a captain who is complicit in a political assassination and agrees with it????

                Anonymous

they kept trying to make series/episodes about that, but then, because they're making episodes of "star trek," the nice hoomans endured all the temporary bullshit they were put through and kept right on being nice hoomans.

That line is, more than anything, quark's biases.

                Anonymous

I know it was Quark's bias, and humans do endure (kind of). Yes, this is Star Trek, humans do have to be nice guys in the end. Kirk was bigoted towards Klingons, but just as he spared the lizard guy, he saved the Khitomer Accords and sealed a reconciliation between the Federation and Klingons.
What I'm saying is that Sisko being complicit of a murder, Section 31 (space CIA) attempting to gas an entire species, kinda ruined Roddenberry's utopia for me, and given how nuTrek turned out to be with DISC and Hispanic (Federation abandoning the Romulans, Earth defaulting to Nazism) you can't argue I'm not right in feeling that way.

I'm talking about how Trek had incompatible ideas thrown at it as far as DS9. Granted, that wasn't Roddenberry's vision anymore, but still. And the newer Trek shows followed that path of decay and only exacerbated that, so much so that Section 31 is getting its own film? lmao

definitely chasing ratings, also correct me if I'm wrong but DS9 took a hit when VOY started as they split the budget and the writers, and the writers didn't want to work on that

I actually like the cast of Discovery, I just think the writing is terrible. They're pretty talented people, they're just written like it's a stupid soap opera instead of Star Trek.

Saru and Georgiou are the only too competent people on this show, but I only just started S3.

call me a schitzo but I think they did this on purpose, whether it's purely for money to incentivize people to watch the newer shit or part of the israelite culture war, that's on you, but it perfectly mirrors what happened with other fandoms such as star wars and they're doing it with all other beloved franchises under the sun

it's unironically all part of a mass scheme to atomize society
atomized individuals=powerless, easily controlled, depressed, fill void with consumption, etc. more atomized=better cogs
I doubt the writers of these shows are given memos on how to do this, I think its basically a feedback loop where people just get more and more narrow with their tribes and more hateful against other ones. probably gets nudges from the elite though

    Because it is poorly-written trash.
    >created years after the guild strike resulted in studios purging experienced writers, breaking the chain of mentorship
    >mandated diversity hiring further restricting hiring pool for possible talent
    >filled with woke commie garbage (because of diversity hiring pulling in pampered gays, lesbians, and non-whites with imaginary axes to grind)
you get both bad writing AND woke writing)

A few things are not the writer’s or actor’s faults, like studios pushing paywalled streaming format.
    >episodic writing largely abolished in favor of stories that take 12 episodes (at least) to tell, packed with boring filler. end result is not much happens and seasons going from 25 episodes to 12 or so.
    >skimping on the budget more than ever, relying on bad CGI instead of practical effects.
    >paywall means they can churn out shit, safe from the cold truth of Nielsen ratings
    >paywall means fewer people see it. paywall also means no syndication, meaning even fewer still see it

The problems are not mutually exclusive. Bad writing is simply bad writing. SOME shows manage to succeed with a largely non-episodic format, but they have an interesting and GOOD episode-contained mainplot or subplot. Modern Star Trek writers are really quite bad at this. With the episodic format being abandoned you also lose that opportunity to have those few episodes that really stand out and shine, which presents a challenge to even good writers.

whatever the reasoning, it does not matter, it is not compatible with current method of distribution
so, just accept and move on

            Anonymous

Episodic IS compatible with the modern form of distribution. Misguided greed is the only inhibitor. The thinking being, “they’ll stay as a monthly subscriber if we drag the plot out” or “they’ll download the ENTIRE season from Amazon instead of just a few episodes this way!” So what they’ve done is make largely boring episodes with little payoff and not much happening, and created a product completely unsuited for future syndication. All of these modern Trek shows are doomed to exist behind a paywall, and nobody really cares, because nothing ever really happens. The few times people discuss these episodes are:
            >when the writers rape canon
            >when the writers kill somebody off
            >when the writers go absurdly commie woke

Ah. Not having an argument means the other person’s thinking must be wrong. Honestly, this kind of shoving head into the sand is what’s killing Paramount. None of the current Trek iterations would survive on cable. The fans don’t like any of it. There is a PROFOUND minority of fans who will say they find one or two of these shows merely watchable. These shows have no rewatch value and will be forgotten over time. The lack of merchandise is a huge tell. If these shows were successful there would have been a toy marketing boom, t-shirts and posters and other things like spin-off comics and novels, partnerships with food companies to release special editions with the characters on the box, etc. Oh, and the memes. Where are the memes? I’ve yet to see an organic meme arise from ANY of these shows that wasn’t one shared among Trek groups only to HATE on these shows.

there is no space for making new trek on the old model, the market is diluted and they would rehash old plots anyway.

basic fiction is dead already, let it go, you sound like a gay that still uses a typewriter

Your journey of abject denial about how NuTrek is actually good:

                >you just have wishful thinking
                >writing is dead anyway. you’re a gay.
Paramount needs to cancel it all, fix their problems, then try again in another ten years. Make it largely episodic. Make it character driven. Make it inspiring. Avoid modern-day personal politics. Avoid most swearing. Avoid gratuitous violence. Use more practical effects. Hire writers and actors based on merit. Observe cannon established pre-Discovery. Let the fans know a strong and believable launching point will be everything they saw in DISCO/Picard/SNW was an alternate timeline that no longer exists. Release it to cable.

Cable forces accountability. They know if fans don’t like it, they are screwed. Plenty of people have cable. And syndication is still a pretty huge deal. Most younger people who knew about Star Trek caught Next Gen in reruns on various cable channels. Hiding things behind paywalls is one reason why ALL show quality is so terrible now. When CBS opted to air the first season of Discovery on cable, it was their second worst rated show. Cable never lies.

Because they decided to remove the streaming licenses to force people to pay for Paramount+, and Paramount+ was a sinking ship from the get go due to releasing in to an oversaturated market. They would have made more money just letting places like netflix and amazon keep paying for streaming rights. SNW, PIC S3, PROD, and LD were all moves in the right direction, but by the time these fricks got their shit together, it was already too late.
