To be fair, most Trek movies have been that since the end of the TOS films. While the nu-trek movies weren't good, they aren't insultingly bad and woke-cringe like STD.

It saddens me that JJ has been tapped to direct a remake of 'Krull'. Yes, I know I can just refuse to see the new movie but it sucks that the old one will be overwritten in the public consciousness by the new one.

Sorry if you expected TNG to last forever. The people who give a shit about TOS are quickly dying off and TNG already had its theatrical run. They needed to expand the fanbase and you should consider yourself lucky that the nu-trek movies had any amount of fan service at all when you weren't the primary target audience. And as I've said earlier in the thread, the movies haven't been real trek since Wrath of Khan. Deal or bail, it's not getting better for you.

I don't know the key to success but I do know that the key to failure is trying to appeal to everyone. Also they could try not straight up lying to fans. They did it again with Discovery

But your definition of failure is purely based on what you want when I've told you you're not the primary target audience. The nu-trek movies were profitable as far as I know, and another TOS or TNG canon movie wouldn't have been. Sorry if you felt lied to, but literally no one cares.

And there was no way they could justify the expense of a movie when the core fanbase didn't show up for any of the previous movies. Better to keep the franchise alive somehow than let it completely die off or relegated to the garbage shows we get now. But there's no realistic way of pleasing you, so whatever.

I just said they eschewed their original audience. Why would we show up to pay for their dumbed down for mass appeal product when we were told we weren't needed or even welcome because we're "toxic" for pointing out how they're not giving the series the respect it deserves. You know what would make me happy? Professional space examining both sides of philosophical problems. You know, Star Trek. Not sexed up 20 somethings sprinting down hallways to rap music.

For me, it's the shot of Kirk rolling up on the Enterprise under construction. The Enterprise can't even land on planets, its design was obviously never meant to even enter an atmosphere, and it's well established in the series that starfleet ships are built at the utopia planitia shipyards in orbit around Mars. JJ Abrams put that shot in the film because he's a fricking hack with no imagination so of course he felt a need to put in that kind of obvious hero looking at his future shot for the sake of putting it in a trailer, and gave it no more thought than that because he's physically incapable of doing so. THAT'S insultingly stupid, without even factoring in the convenient coincidence of it being built in a fricking small town in Iowa.
Also the Romulan mining ship looking like an indescribable mass of blades and being loaded with enough weapons to take on a fleet.

They seemed so obbsessed with remakes, it’s why khan was in the second one, it’s why the enterprise was wrecked in beyond and it’s why they were hyping a time travel movie as the potential fourth movie. It’s weird how Hollywood people think, it’s like they understand what they liked and can only imitate it poorly. JJ and his ilk are the worst things that could’ve happened to Hollywood in general, no creativity between these three israelites worth billions

From what I’m hearing, the movie was a topic of discussion between David Zaslav and Bob Bakish. Warner is positioning itself as the distributor.

oh god it's Generations but with infinitely more soi and cringe

I assure you that Warner is very much on board with the idea.
What really got the ball rolling was the positive (and viral) reaction to the SNW-LDS crossover.
Warner wants Matalas in the director’s chair. A major point of contention right now is the main lead. Paramount is pushing for Sonequa (joined by Anson Mount, Jack Quaid, Quvenzhané Wallis, and various legacy Trek actors like Jonathan Frakes). Matalas wants more focus on old actors, particularly Frakes and Riker’s USS Titan. Paramount wants Sonequa as the lead because that’s why they ended Discovery.
Matalas is eager to direct so I’m sure they’ll figure things out.

I liked VOY. But I saw it first when I was a child, so I didn't get it was a lot of worse TNG episodes. But the Doctor and Seven and even the Kim/Tom dynamic at times made up for it. Oh and Janeway was a much more "real" person than Picard.

Could it be good? Sure, they could wipe the stain from the *real* "prime" timeline by firmly and unequivocally placing STD, SNW, PIC etc outside of it and ending them all(it goes without saying that Pickle Trek is already its own thing, since it's a comedy). They could proceed from a clean slate with a new late-24th TV show that has nothing to do with their "Legacy" horseshit.

But they won't, will they. They'll quadruple down, they'll use it to further validate and interconnect *real* Star Trek with their heinous imitations. Think of the reverence, the technical skill, the effort, the genuine affection that all went into a project like Trials and Tribble-ations, and tell me any of the fricking diversity hire, HR manager-tier, smug, self-satisfied c**ts currently working on Trek are capable of that? We already know they aren't, because even when Corporate hands down a mandate to try and please real fans, what they produce is Picard S3.

Star Trek is dead, it died when they cancelled Enterprise(which had many issues but at least still pretended continuity with what came before and shared some of the same creatives as 90's Trek), and it's not coming back.

I saw a clip of them going back to the Enterprise D (even though that makes no sense because the secondary hull was completely destroyed and the saucer seemed like it was completely trashed by crash landing on the planet) and the old main cast is so old that it was just pathetic. None of them seemed like they were even trying to act like their characters.

Ironically Bullock on American Dad is what Picard would have been if the show gave Stewart free reign. Dude seriously wanted to be a silver fox version of Picard that punched aliens and had freaky sex with alien chicks.

Why do people go on about this. The man snapped. After so much shit happening, after the entire earth got fricking destroyed, Picard showed his human side for a short while and fricking snapped. He also got brought back after raving about Moby Dick for a while. It was amazing.
            This literal autistic purism where
            >Ummm ackchually Picard would never get angry he would make a speech beseeching the borg to stop being mean and then he would drink Earl Grey
is the ONLY response Picard could ever have baffles me. The man is fricking pissed, the Borg reached the line in the sand and he will not tolerate this shit anymore, kill them all and let god sort out the rest

              Anonymous

Beyond the fact that Picard dealt with a decent amount of his trauma in the show itself when dealing with Hugh. I can accept what the writers did in pushing for drama in the film, I can’t accept the ideocy of the borgs plan of having to BE AT EARTH to open the time portal, a plan like that makes it seem like they could’ve done it ANYWHERE and just gone to earth. That or the enterprise not detecting the borg beaming over when they destroyed the sphere when following them to the past. Like ANY time travel plot, it needs to much of a leap in logic to fully work, the movie just has action and memes and that’s about it.

              beyond is fricking shit mate

Beyond was a decent action flick with a utilized the crew well, letting each one get a moment to shine. It had a weak villain sure, but EVERY trek film since first contact had a theme of vengeance for some reason as well

                Anonymous

Yeah and thats completely fair, time travel always sucks even when its cool.
But having Picard go all captain Ahab is still fricking sick and completely justified. His breakdown in "Family" or whatever that episode was called is plenty of foreshadowing for him to be susceptible to what the Borg did to him and now the entire Earth.

                Anonymous

The performances and effects of first contact have never been a problem. ALL of the next gen films suffer from terrible writing by tv people who never seemed to learn how to transfer their talents to screen writing

Are you seriously telling us it's been almost thirty years and you never fricking grasped that the time portal was a Hail Mary, not the Borg's initial plan, which was just to invade in the present and would have worked if Picard hadn't shown up and used his trauma-telepathy to blow up the Cube?

Jesus buddy, maybe nuTrek really is more your speed. That was an insult. I'm implying you're a moron. Given how obtuse you are I thought I'd better spell it out in text rather than relying on your to grasp subtext or context.

                Anonymous

If they had a back up plan to go BACK IN TIME, then why only send ONE CUBE? We’ve seen the borg collective, they have THOUSANDS of cubes. If you’re so confident in a time travel story than maybe you just like bad stories? The effects and performances were good, but stop pretending like ANY of the next gen movies had good stories that hold up to an ounce of scrutiny

I don't trust anyone in charge of the franchise to understand anything about what made it work. Call me when for the 70th anniversary whoever owns it decides to celebrate the series by either making an optimistic show about morality and technology in say, the 2500s, or a movie with new characters that boldly explores what it is to be human while confronting a futuristic unknown, with the stakes simply being understanding and growth.

Shareholders don't like it when you gamble hundreds of millions on something not guaranteed to have maximum market penetration. If people cared, they should've voted an anti-merger political climate into being. That's just how it works.

A big Endgame kind of thing would've made sense 20 years ago but general audiences don't give a shit about Star Trek or Picard in 2023 so that wouldn't work.

The best way to do a new Star Trek movie is to just do Star Trek 4 but do it as a 'soft reboot', in so much they treat it like the audience doesn't have to be familiar with the first three movies.

      Anonymous

Almost all of Star Trek is a soft reboot, the "plot" is window dressing to telling morality plays, Spacemall not withstanding.

It's going to be so bad. They'll make Michael Burnham the lead. You know it. And it sucks so bad. Because Tarantino wanted to make one. And they wouldn't let him. He wanted to do A Piece of the Action. It would've been great. But they chose to make a bad movie instead.
