Star Trek: Discovery show runner confirms cancellation

>“We didn’t know [Season 5 would be the end]. We finished shooting in November of [2022] and then found out around the New Year — and we can’t say enough of our gratitude to CBS Studios and Paramount Plus for giving us the opportunity to go back and shoot some additional days, because we felt like we really then got to wrap up the series. Season 5 will feel like a satisfying journey.

>Then, we were able to kind of do a little bit extra to wrap up the show as a whole, and we’re so grateful for that. So when we got to go back and shoot that material we knew going in that those few days were going be the last days — and it was kind of cool, because we got to go in knowing that and really just appreciate being there; appreciate being with one another.

>We got to say goodbye on the sets, which was just a really special and bittersweet thing. So it was wonderful to get to do that.”

Oh well. Anyway, STD wins one more World Trekkord, it's not just the series with the most production hours, but Discovery is also the Star Trek series with the most tonnage of craft services, thanks to Trekord breaker Mary Wiseman. See you in the upcoming series, Starfleet Academy, Mary!

CBS-Paramount saw this and other Trek series as "an investment" where they thoug they had to spend billions in series no one saw just to build up the userbase. They spent the billions but not the userbase. The only chance to be seen will be when it shows up on Hulu, Netflix and Amazon one day.

Hey its me, guy who suffered through it all. the answer is as expected, there was a small really rabid fanbase that would absorb any star trek media and held onto it.

Season 3 was the last time the show had any production quality and started off by saying the Federation that all of your favorite captains worked to protect is dead and vanished in the future showning humanities struggles didnt matter because they all died to one of Sarus (giant fish man) peoples kid getting stuck in a dilithium cluster then shouting out a moronic yell when it finds its dead mom someone resonating wiht all of the dilithium in the galaxy and blowing up all the ships, now it lives in an AI generated world that takes care of its moronic ass.

The next season was filmed during covid and everyone got uglier and fatter, they filmed it all on a greenscreen that they never once measured or organized backgrounds correctly. one episode Michelle Yeohs character (who is a murderous genocider from another timeline who they let hang out with them for no reason at all despite showing leathel force against anyone who mildly slights them) gets contacted by TOS Supervisor who throws her through a portal back in time so they can do the section 31 show but no one else can come with her for reasons. also Stacy Abrams fat loser ass shows up as a queen of earth and they have to convince her to join the new federation. also the gay guys adopt a mentally ill kid whose trill girlfriend dies so they put the symbiote inside of themselves and have visions of their girlfriend. they are also non-binary because of course they are.

Everyone left for strange new worlds which is a huge piece of shit as well and in the first like 5 episode spock bangs 3 women and the Captain Pike uses videos from Jan 6th to explain to a civilization that we were once at war with one another and they can change. entire show feels like it was written by awful modern writers that got quick cliffnotes on ToS

it annoys me because they couldnt just go into the future or to another unexplored area and do their own thing. they HAVE to be the first of the new federation and they didnt even learn anything about the past captains or what they represented. it just became a "fine we will get out of the main timeline but everything before us died in THE BURN and we are now making our own starfleet with out own rules and we are better and more edgier".

Also Strange New Worlds is doing the exact same thing and it annoys me, but less of killing Starfleet more of "Im pike i know my future and i am going to be given a much larger role in how Spock and Kirk met" and they also needlessly give backstories to all of these old characters as if they are, as i mention above, looking to reboot ToS and make it their own. also who the frick is going to care about the Section 31 movie written by these hacks?

It's even more insidious because from what I gathered from S3, the Federation was already turning to shit some time after the 24th century (it takes place in the 32nd), and they hadn't been contacted by the Q or the other godlike beings in "hundreds of years".

which is funny because of how it contradicts ENT, which shows that in Daniels' time (31st century) the Federation encompasses the majority of the galaxy and was thriving
But then STD I guess was skimming Memory Alpha and they put in that the Feds had actually been crippled by the temporal cold war, stagnation, there hadn't been any real exploration in a long time, and members were leaving left and right. And this was before subspace got destroyed.

I mostly read the cliff notes on S4 but there's a moment that pisses me off too; they said that in 900 years, no Federation ship ever attempted to leave the galaxy since Kirk's Enterprise did in WNMHGB.
So they just never advanced that far?
It's also said many times that the Feds became stagnant and complacent well before the bhuuurrrnnn ruined everything.

Unpopular opinion, but Discovery actually had a great aesthetic and concept in the first few episodes. Making Burnham Spock's secret sister was really stupid and never necessary, just connection for its own sake, but the show had a lot of good things going for it. The overall look of the Shenzhou, the away team body armor, all that was great. Jason Isaacs was a great cast and Landry was an interesting character. The initial feel of being on the USS Discovery was great, the armed guards, the black badges, that first scene with Tilly "Wait, you weren't briefed?...Then I can't tell you." and immediately shutting down after being so friendly. There was a really interesting show to be made here.

But they killed everything. Isaacs could have been a Sisko style character but they decided he was from the mirror universe despite not really doing anything evil before that, he was just a man trying to win a war. The secrecy and mystery was gone almost immediately. Landry was killed off. The aesthetic got worse and worse, from terrible new uniforms to Burnham's ridiculous hair to Tilly getting fat. They took the dumbest idea they had - Spock's secret sister - and leaned into it for an entire season.

Just a lot of squandered potential. A competent showrunner could have taken that first episode and really done something with it.

They ripped off the concept for the spore shit unapologetically from others. Then they institute an in universe cover up to explain why nobody ever heard of this shit before. And then they throw the ship a thousand years in the future so its stops fricking with canon

The last good Trek show was 30 years ago, the last good episode of Trek was more than 20 years ago. I love old Trek and really hate new Trek, but how many times can you really discuss the same unchanging content? There's just nothing to discuss here, and the sort of in-depth in-universe discussions that appeal to me and most higher IQ Trek fans aren't really possible here. If you try to discuss the reason the UFP uses Phasers when everyone else prefers Disruptors (except the Cardassians, who are the only power seen to mix the two) you'll just get someone posting the cartoon, or someone trying to speculate as to why Andorian and Romulan pussy smells like.

Some of the best shows of all time are heavily serialized, but one of the downsides is that no single episode can stand out and be great in a terrible season. Before, you could have a terrible episode, and then a great one right after, and because it's all self contained stories with only minor continuity flowing from one to the next the shit didn't stain the gold. But that can't happen in a show like Discovery, where one bad episode spoils everything because the concepts and characterizations get carried forward forever.

The beauty of episodic sci-fi series like Star Trek and X-Files is that the plot could be anything. And a stinker storyline was over and done with in 45 minutes. Serialized shows have to follow the same handful of storylines for minimum 8 episodes. No matter how boring or poorly executed they are

Yesterday I couldn't get the shill to tell me which episodes of STD he thought would become classics that people would remember for decades. He just kept saying "umm, TNG BAD!".

Not just episodes, but characters as well. Even people who haven't watched a single episode of Star Trek can identify the most popular characters of the 60s-90s. Even people who don't follow television at least know who Captains Kirk and Picard are. Who plays them, theit catchphrases, etc. Who can name a single nutrek character?

Trek is fundamentally old media. Tablet kids literally don't watch shows and movies, they watch 30 second ADHD clips and youtubers. The entire idea of the media you grew up with is going to die, not just the franchises.

          >Andorian Women
Given Andoria's icy, harsh environment, Andorians would have evolved to minimize energy expenditure and retain heat. Their bodies might produce oils or secretions that offer protection against the cold, similar to some Earth animals that secrete oils for insulation. This could result in a natural scent that is faint, possibly with clean or slightly metallic notes reflecting the mineral-rich environments of their home world. Their reduced need for sweating due to the cold climate might also mean their natural scent is less pronounced than that of species from warmer climates.

          >Romulan Women
Romulans, originating from a temperate climate with rich biodiversity, might have a more noticeable natural scent. The warmer climate of Romulus suggests a physiology that manages heat through sweating, potentially leading to a stronger natural odor. Considering their diet, which likely includes a variety of plants and animals from their planet, their natural scent could have earthy or herbal undertones. Moreover, their shared ancestry with Vulcans, who have a copper-based blood (leading to greenish blood color), could impart a slight metallic hint to their natural scent, distinct from the iron-based blood scent of humans.

          >Conclusion
Romulan women are both sneaky AND stinky.

My boss was telling me how much he loves Paramount +, though he mostly just watches Halo and Yellowstone. Once a week he uses his account to make every tv in the building play all three Indiana Jones movies.
Today at the Easter party he was standing in front of a tv watching Temple of Doom.
I told him about my plans to find a Star Trek chalice over the weekend and he asked if I wanted to hang out and watch Last Crusade in his top floor office for the rest of the day.
He's the only person I know with a Paramount + account.

Voyager had a few moments, but very few, and was a marked decline in quality. The reality is that every Star Trek series, TNG included, has had more bad than good, and time just allows everyone to remember the good and forget the bad. In twenty years there will be balding zoomers who fondly remember Star Trek: Discovery if only because the Star Trek in 2040 is so much worse, similar to the way people the Star Wars prequels were good because the Disney sequels were so bad.

Speaking of Star Trek: Discovery, S05 of the hit series starts next week on The Plus. The DISCO spin-off Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues filming their S03. The DISCO Section 31 spin-off movie has finished principle filming. And the DISCO spin-off Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy starts filming this Summer.

The ratings thing was always a distraction anyway. Tens of millions could have been watching it - it wouldn't change the fact that it's utter shit. It's because it's so glaringly inferior to actual Trek that its shills/defenders so often resorted to "It was in the top 10 downloaded shows on X during Y!" etc. As opposed to, say, defending it on the basis of interesting ideas or moral dilemmas it brought up. Because there were none.

It’s bizarre they got so many seasons. The “bad” Star Trek shows dwarf this show out of existence and cost less to make.

It’s so weird too because the argument was always about viewership. Not enough people wanted sci fi. But then they can make this crap for 5 seasons without an audience? And 5 spinoff shows. What?

Their "seasons" were only 10 to 12 episodes. Technically only a half season, but they changed the marketing and called it a "season" because CBS wouldn't fund more episodes.

Real older Star Trek had 25 episode seasons.

god no, its a paramount+ release. Michelle Yeoh costs way to much money so they had to write her out of Discovery. the figures for a complete section 31 show probably made zero sense since they are bleeding money at this point so they moved it to a standalone movie.

Paramount is looking to sell shit and its gonna be a wild ride seeing what theyll do in the future. rumor is Halo is getting a season 3 and an ODST spinoff series so the Trek budget might be drying up. looks like itll just be Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks till they figure out the next steps

That's what I thought. I assumed the Section 31 spinoff would be a miniseries, but a Nutrek movie could only be stream-only. Nutrek doesn't have the audience for a theatrical release

Just another distraction, like focusing on how many viewers there supposedly are/were:

The ratings thing was always a distraction anyway. Tens of millions could have been watching it - it wouldn't change the fact that it's utter shit. It's because it's so glaringly inferior to actual Trek that its shills/defenders so often resorted to "It was in the top 10 downloaded shows on X during Y!" etc. As opposed to, say, defending it on the basis of interesting ideas or moral dilemmas it brought up. Because there were none.

Cancelled/not cancelled - whatever. Why don't you defend your nutrek show on the basis of its content? Talk about your favourite episode(s), for instance. What tricky moral dilemmas/problems did the characters face? What interesting sci-fi concepts were explored? What thoughts did the stories inspire? And tell us about the characters. Who are the most memorable and why? How do their skills/personalities complement those of the rest of the crew? Pre-Abrams/Kurtzman Trek routinely inspires this sort of discussion, yet I've never seen any nutrek enjoyer actually go into detail regarding what they like about their shows. Come to think of it, I've never seen nutrek enjoyers talk among themselves about a particular plot point or character development or whatever; it's always just "X character is heckin' awesome" (without any specifics beyond skin colour/sexuality) or (toothless) insults or regurgitated press-release info directed at old-Trek fans. A disinterested person might conclude that this is because nutrek content is simply too dull and superficial to merit such talk - that beneath the LGBTQP+QWERTY?*# representation there's nothing there - so why not prove them wrong?

There have been good sci-fi series since (actual) Star Trek - The Orville, while derivative, had its moments, as did The Expanse. A few good space films too, e.g. Moon and The Martian (the latter involving lots of problem-solving, which is very Star Trek). There are plenty of space/sci-fi stories left to tell - provided you have intelligence and imagination. Nutrek writers lack both, as do you - in addition to lacking standards.

The Expanse lasted more than 25 episodes, and why is that arbitrary number suddenly so important? And, wait, now you've gone from claiming the sci-fi genre is played out to saying that "fiction is dead"? You're way out there now, mate. Which is more likely, I wonder: storytelling, which has been part of human civilisation for thousands of years, just suddenly became defunct? Or nutrek writers are talentless hacks?

yes, we have saturation and jadedness now, added to infinite options and tiktok-like media.
Fiction will be a zombie forever, but nothing sprangs the next franchise that make people create conventions for.

Hire the most heady intellectual English writers that are fans of cold war espionage thrillers and Hornblower and Sharpe adventures romps to write an episodic adventure-of-the-week TV show about a joint British-Prussian naval vessel during the Seven Year's War. And then when they're done, transcribe that story to instead focus on a Federation starship. Done. That's what I want to see. And how RLM phrased it, focus on experts using their expertise to solve complex problems.

honestly i dont know at this point. i even hated Picard Season 3. there were some fun parts to it but it just ended up being more miserable and less hopeful than anything. they brought back characters just to die, shoe horned in fan favorite things from Voyager and DS9 and so on.

The hope i have is an after VOY,DS9,TNG Star Trek that just follows the old style without having to introduce 18 different generational characters. but instead its going to be dumb shit like "Spocks kid is here somehow, and Jack Picard is here now, and Geordis daughter is here now, and also this Trill is also Dax" and thats what the hack writer matalis wants. i dont think old star trek can ever come back

They're clearly not fans of the show (otherwise we'd see discussions of its content, as described here

Just another distraction, like focusing on how many viewers there supposedly are/were: [...]

A disinterested person might conclude that this is because nutrek content is simply too dull and superficial to merit such talk - that beneath the LGBTQP+QWERTY?*# representation there's nothing there - so why not prove them wrong?

); they're fans of what it represents. Which is basically, "Frick you, Drumpf/geezer/chud/goy/whatever I dislike." Kind of reminds me of a cartoon in a Viz-type annual I got for Christmas years ago: a Roy of the Rovers-style parody in which a football club merges with another football club and becomes increasingly corporate, culminating in the pitch being replaced by a housing development and the supporters cheering on the share price.

this is exactly what happens when you are trapped on a ship with people you don't get along with, in the middle of absoluitely fricking nowhere with zero chance of getting home and constant existential threats
it is cinema verite, and yes it is gay ass, but welcome to the human condition (status: gay and ass)

Star gate Universe, albeit infinitely better than anything bad Reboot has done, was a FUK U to Stargate fans because test Audiences didn't want degenerate Dykes in SGA season 5's siren episode!

Show runner Mozilla, among the first virtue signalling woke idiots, Cancelled SGA because he wanted to be a pioneer of the progressively woke dog shit, that would have become a trendsetter for the aforementioned made for modern audiences!

So, Piss on Mozilla, piss on SGU, and piss on Dykes!
