I just watched A New Hope with my family. First time seeing star wars in like 20 years, and the first time my wife or kids saw it.

It was better than I expected.

Why don’t they do a fricking Lucas cut of Episode 3 already? The actors are all young enough to add some extra footage and fix a few things.

      >Lucas cut

Lucas had absolute creative control over Revenge of the Sith. He self-financed every film in his tenure besides the original film. There was no one who ever told George what to do. Revenge of the Sith as is is the film George wanted to make

Been reading Zahn's trilogy so I can see how Filoni fricks it up with Ahsoka. The prose is utilitarian without being boring and, usually, respectful to the source without being overly referential. I do still cringe sometimes at shit like "Leia saw Threepio talking to the aliens and was reminded of the Ewoks on Endor..." type shit but thankfully that's kept to a minimum. I was surprised that such a memetic franchise in the genre fiction space was blessed with such a competent writer.

I'm not sure though why so many people wanted this to be the sequel trilogy. The scope is tiny and the characters aren't challenged in any unique ways, except for maybe Luke starting halfway through the second book. It really is Thrawn's story. When Thrawn or C'baoth aren't in the picture I find myself getting bored. The most annoying thing about adapting it is that there are so many ways for Disney to make the protagonists' struggles more gripping, but we all know it's going to be Rosario Dawson spinning around for eight hours.

      Because they haven't read it

Read Zahns other Thrawn books. I always thought they were much better as they let Thrawn get proper focus in a more character driven story. The pic related trilogy is from his POV as he rises through the imperial ranks, and then the Ascendancy trilogy feel are a completely different angle on the SW franchise and are about Chiss culture in the unknown Regions

I like that, for the most part, they aren't desperate to feel Star Wars-y in the way the sequels and the prequels can sometimes get, but there's also a weird just-so self-consciousness to it that's a little clunky. Force-cancelling lizards that people wear as scarves feel too much like visible puppet strings, for example, to say nothing of Thrawn's hilarious conjectures. Mara Jade never did anything for me either.

But the fact it feels like a genuine attempt to continue the story instead of the fanwank collapse of the vast majority of the EU sets the Thrawn trilogy apart. I think when people put it on a pedestal that's really what they're responding to.

I don't even think Johnson dislikes Star Wars. He just made a terrible movie.
