JJ Abrams is a good choice to direct. His Start Trek movies felt more like Star Wars, and at the very least it'll be better than the prequels.

I really didn't like Into Darkness, but it would have made more sense as a Star Wars movie. Like imagine the Spock Kahn fight at the end is a lightsaber fight. The guy didn't get Star Trek, but I agree, he gets star wars.

You know this guy directed two of the sequels and all 3 sucked right? Better than the prequels is something most indie directors can achieve.

Of all the new cast, I think the only one I'm not sure about is Adam Driver. Unfortunately I can see him getting lost in the shuffle and being forgotten. The others seem fantastic and will no doubt create lovable characters

This. Honestly, they could do pretty much anything else (though realistically how bad could a mainstream megacorp like Disney really make it? They'll just churn out 3 fine but forgettable and cliched blockbusters) but just seeing these 3 all together again on screen will be worth the price of admission

Is there any doubt? It'd be an utter waste to cast the likes of him if they were only going to have him get offed like a stormtrooper in the first scene of the first movie. haha that'd be so lame, but Lucas gave Disney his blessing and Kathleen Kennedy is overseeing it all!

I'm tired of this revisionist history with Star Wars. The prequels were depised by everyone except little kids when they came out. And EVERYONE was beyond excited for the Force Awakens and happy that George Lucas had no involvement. When Force Awakens came out everyone loved it. Nerdrotic loved it, Geeks and Gamers loved it, Cinemaphile loved it, reddit loved it, everyone was excited for where the story was going. Now we're at this point where everyone pretends they hated Force Awakens and always hated Disney Star Wars, it's such a fricking lie, I was here, I remember it, I remember Star Wars fever in 2015/early 2016. The fanbase was united more than ever and eager for more. Never forget the truth Cinemaphile. No matter how many of you homosexuals try to deny it, this was how it happened.

They were certainly not widely despised, maybe among the manchildren who were mad George Lucas didn't make the exact same movie that would make them feel like a child again. That type of hate was personified by pic related untalented midwits, who are only capable of making the worst trash yet think they can understand movies better than George Lucas.

Can you provide any evidence that they were widely despised ? Because the internet wasn't so widespread at the time I guess we can look at "Cinemascore" which is A- for all the prequels. This is a good score. Spider-man 2 got the same score too.

Hey genius, that only megafranchise Harry Potter could beat it that year doesn't tell me that people despised these movies are you fricking stupid ? See Fantastic Beasts for what two mediocre movies people don't like can do to the box office.

It was superficially enjoyable if you didn't think too hard about it.
It had zero depth - emotional or story or setting.
The moment that got me the most was the bit when the planets blew up, and they're all watching it happen from another planet.
That dragged me out straight away. They didn't care because they assume most of the audience is unaware of how big space is and how it actually works. But surely actual SW and sci-fi fans ARE aware. I don't expect 100% realism in SW of course but that was just lazy and even contemptuously done.

That's the exact moment I also walked away to sort laundry or some shit like that. I came back later to watch the rest of it but it was a rare moment of totally losing interest.

I followed the whole production process of TFA on daily basis back in 2013-2014 and know it was going to be shit the moment I saw leaked script.
It was ANH but with moronic new details and zero of what ANH was loved for.
It fundamentally wasnt going to work as the start of franchise.
You don't start it with Luke being a failure, Republic being weaker than terrorist organization and no one telling Kylo Ren that Anakin was redeemed.
I watched movie in theatre and didn't change my opinion. I hoped TLJ will salvage what it could but instead it made moronic story even more moronic in different way.

People fell for Abrams israeli tricks. What he did was make it appear that this story was going something that these characters would get some sort of payoff down the line so you would tune for the next episode just like it's a tv show.
Then Rian Johnson was tied to all these loose plot threads he had to resolve and took all the blame when the answers weren't satisfying enough. He couldn't retroactively make Force Awakens a good movie.
This is when israelite Abrams either got too greedy or really thought he was a good filmmaker and he could save this mess. At least we got some justice and people saw him for the hack that he was. No one blames just Rian Johnson anymore

It's hard to piece together what happened. A lot of different people involved have given different contradictory statements.

From what this youtuber was able to piece together, George Lucas gave Disney an outline of his plan for the sequels and was going to be creatively involved in the process. They hired a writer to write a script for George's Ideas ( Michael Arndt ). But they had a hard time finding a director, no one wanted to direct it. JJ already turned it down once. He accepted the second time they asked him though. Being the only high profile director who wanted to take on the role of directing the thing, his voice mattered the most because Disney wanted a movie by 2015 and this project had to get started. However JJ didn't like the George Lucas treatment of his own franchise, JJ thought he could do it better. So Lucas was phased out, his treatement was thrown out, Micheal Ardnt left, and JJ and Kasdan wrote TFA from scratch in a hurry even when the movie was in pre-production. Sometimes they would write on the sets. So they barely had enough time to write one movie, let alone three.
