Luke Skywalker is probably the single most underutilized major fictional character in history. Outside of leading 3 films 40 years ago, he’s only had some cameos here or there. There has been hundreds and hundreds of hours of (mostly awful) Disney Star Wars content of which, Luke has appeared in maybe 1% of.
So the idea that he is overexposed or that we need to “move on” from him is a laughable joke. Especially when Ashoka gets 12 shows that nobody watches. Or Rey gets another film despite being the most despised character in cinema history

I just see Star Wars as a setting now that can potentially be used for okay stories. Novels and games can still be good, shows too if they're not made by Lucasfilm. Star Wars as a movie series about the Skywalkers or Palpatines or whatever the frick is dead, yes.
The problem is that the setting has also been damaged. The sequels effectively put the setting into the same position it was at the end of the OT, except with far less likable characters and more poorly established factions/organizations. No one wants to see more of the sequels characters, and no one really cares about the establishment of a bootleg government or the potential remaining threat of any bootleg factions. Any story taking place after the sequels is just going to highlight how much better it would have been if the sequels hadn't existed. The only real way to move forward is to either completely disregard the government/jedi shit that general audiences are interested in, or to skip far enough forward to effectively rewrite the setting.
The thing to do is to fire Kathleen Kennedy. Bring in a new CEO (like James Gunn) that plans out the next 10-20 years.
For me personally I’d do one of two things. One, I’d just adapt the EU and recast the Big 3. That’s the easiest way to make tens of billions of dollars from the passionate Millennials and Gen Xers, while slowly building a new audience with Zoomers. The EU was very diverse anyway so that issue takes care of itself.
Two, I start a new Saga thousands of years into the future after Luke’s New Jedi Order.
But either way, Kennedy has to go. She is a blight on Lucasfilm, and an embarrassment for women everywhere

GoT had the potential (both books and show) to be better than Star Wars, because it has characters with more psychological depth. so the fact that it got as bad as it did was actually much more damaging to the earlier seasons, because you can't separate season 1 Tyrion from season 8 Tyrion in the way you can separate OT Luke from Sequel Luke.

The problem is that the setting has also been damaged. The sequels effectively put the setting into the same position it was at the end of the OT, except with far less likable characters and more poorly established factions/organizations. No one wants to see more of the sequels characters, and no one really cares about the establishment of a bootleg government or the potential remaining threat of any bootleg factions. Any story taking place after the sequels is just going to highlight how much better it would have been if the sequels hadn't existed. The only real way to move forward is to either completely disregard the government/jedi shit that general audiences are interested in, or to skip far enough forward to effectively rewrite the setting.

Not really. Had they written a super compelling female character that had a good relationship with Luke, and ultimately became his real heir, it could have worked.
