I don't know on what website I read this, but there was a theory that the New Republic is an allegory for the current US and the First Order is Russia, despite the Nazi imagery. That's why there were so many female libs who are fans of the First Order between TFA and TLJ, because they thought it would be later revealed that Kylo Ren and Hux were actually the good guys.
The Republic maintained the status quo whereby some people are successful and others are not. The Empire appealed to people's fear of becoming the ones who are not. Many such cases.

Also, in universe a lot of people would see the Empire as a continuity of the Republic, a more efficient form of government created in the wake of a brutal civil war with the goal of ensuring anarchy never reigns again. A lot of people are down for that in the abstract, until storm Troopers start going house to house arresting people.
