Well the main guy crashed all kinds of computers as a kid and basically caused a huge mess. The others just did shit like sign the FBI guy up for gay porn. They didn't really cause any other harm, unlike the corporate guy who was embezzling and about to cause an ecological crisis

Yeah but when he crashed all the systems as a child that's the companies fault not the childs. You can't blame a 13yo for shitty security and infrastructure.

The difference between 'Hackers' and 'Crackers' never got through to the mainstream, it never caught on. Everyone who logged into another computer using '1234' as a password was deemed a hacker.

A hacker was someone who used his skills to expose flaws in the system. It had this connotation of being youthful. A cracker was more malevolent.

Nowadays, it is claimed that the Chinese and even WOMEN are hacking things. Man, am I ever glad I got a chance to experience "the scene" before it degenerated completely. And remember, kids, knowing how to program or wanting really badly to figure out how things work inside doesn't make you a hacker! Hacking boxes makes you a "hacker" ! That's right! Write your local representatives at Wikipedia/urbandictionary/OED and let them know that hackers are people that gain unauthorized access/privileges to computerized systems! Linus Torvald isn't a hacker! Richard Stallman isn't a hacker! Niels Provo isn't a hacker! Fat/ugly, maybe! Hackers, no! And what is up with the use of the term "cracker"? As far as I'm concerned, that term was applies to people that bypass copyright protection mechanisms. Vladimir Levin? HACKER. phiber optik? HACKER. Kevin Mitnick? OK, maybe a gay/bad one, but still WAS a "hacker." Hope that's clear.

I wrote a buffer overflow for my windows machine so I can access it remotely. It’s basically a worse version of ssh but the principle applies to other nefarious things that aren’t simply link skidding.
