The controversy is more that it sort of simplified the characters, mainly to be new reader friendly. Plus the book is hard to find it's footing early on, but I'd say around issue 10 it seems much better written.
Honestly if you don't have particular expectations from 20+ years of comics it's far more digestible. There's just bits here and there like Cass making a joke about letting someone die that people find really egregious.
It's a comic clearly written for teen/tween girls, and Cinemaphile is mostly adult men. As an adult man, I think it's fine. Has some weaknesses, but is largely fun with some great art. Issues 14 and 15 are really solid.

Interesting analysis. I still think that there's a lot of dislike of both girl characters and straight relationships in the "Steph is just Tim's girlfriend" criticisms that I got in 2016. It's more like Steph, in the 90's/2000's at least, was like what people thought Jason was most of the time. Jason for most of his time as Robin was a sweet kid and far more capable than people think It wasn't until Jim Starlin who wanted to get rid of him wrote him that the "angry Jason" everyone thinks about became a thing. Even then it wasn't even every issue. so his characterization was all over the place. But by the 90's when they started to talk about Jason the usual thing was "He got too angry and undisciplined and died as a result"
Steph was more outwardly angry and rough around the edges from day 1, though her level of competence fluctuated depending on who was writing her. She kind of got thrown under the bus by the 2000's and made more amateur than she was before so she could die in war Games.
The main thing they share is a similar background(criminal father and drug addicted mother(step-mom in Jason's case), only Jason's father was just some low level crook and not a costumed villain, and more of a guy who fell into a bad scene than an outright bad guy. They're fairly separate by now though, since they usually make Steph more happy and snarky these days and less angry.

Yeah, that was pretty much it. The anti life equation was kind of stupid though as a means to an end. They already had the rot which the red and green fought. There was no reason to come up with another cause.

It's from Batman Inc:Leviathan strikes. I.E. the book where Steph almost broke DC because it wasn't finished until after Flashpoint, but counts as a post Flashpoint book as well, but before Steph was reintroduced(with her batgirl years removed) so this story hovers between canon.
The artist initially was going to draw her as spoiler, then got the go ahead to draw Batgirl, then almost got made to make her Batgirl again(which is why I suspect her modern costume was designed as basically just her Batgirl costume with a new mask)
Steph infiltrates a finishing school for girl assassins(a finishing school being a place where girls learn to be mannered women, not an academic school). I wish one of those DCSHG things used the concept as a place for all the bad girls to go.
her having kinda poofy hair was a thing for a while early on. It went away in the 2000's (even when Damion Scott drew her in Batgirl, weirdly enough) but it came back when she became Robin. In a much more spikey , hedgehog way.

I want to see like a gritty, semi realistic drawing of this now. Something like feason's work. See that's what confuses me, I was never a MJ fan despite the girl next door vibe they go for sometimes, and I love redheads irl and in fiction! I likened MJ more to babs and Steph to Gwen but the latter is more a plot device most times than an actual character.
Feels odd how Steph seems to be a perfect blend of girl next door and a quirky girl with a weird hobby that balance out each one's weaknesses.

The controversy is more that it sort of simplified the characters, mainly to be new reader friendly. Plus the book is hard to find it's footing early on, but I'd say around issue 10 it seems much better written.
Honestly if you don't have particular expectations from 20+ years of comics it's far more digestible. There's just bits here and there like Cass making a joke about letting someone die that people find really egregious.
It's a comic clearly written for teen/tween girls, and Cinemaphile is mostly adult men. As an adult man, I think it's fine. Has some weaknesses, but is largely fun with some great art. Issues 14 and 15 are really solid.
Shucks, forgot to mention Huntress/Spoiler. A great one shot. Also Steph's a big part of Tamaki's Detective Comics: Shadows of the Bat: The Tower 12 issue event, and also shows up in her One Bad Day: Two-Face story.
I wish steph got to be in more BoP stuff in general. Having her be a trainee was a good angle, and she bounces off well with Dinah and Helena. Her more rough and tumble classic self would work well with the BoP too.

The main thing they share is a similar background(criminal father and drug addicted mother(step-mom in Jason's case), only Jason's father was just some low level crook and not a costumed villain, and more of a guy who fell into a bad scene than an outright bad guy. They're fairly separate by now though, since they usually make Steph more happy and snarky these days and less angry.
