As a kid, MK was obviously superior. As an adult you learn to appreciate SF more. But MK is still the better film. It even changed the game lore and has one of the most iconic movie soundtracks of all time
The anime basically emulated and elevated SFII in every way. It had some edgy content, but it was welcome and still fit the universe and it made its straight-forward story more unpredictable. Also it had one hell of a finale - along with that shower scene in the middle.
Also it's important to mention that it's dub only. It had both kino music selection as well as original music made for it. Ryu's theme is top tier. The nip version sounds schmalzy and gay with generic guitar work.

Raul Julia's death gave this movie some after the fact significance but that's really just sentimentality getting in the way of common sense. He blew the rest of the cast out of the water but it's not really a great performance, just a guy making chicken salad out of chickenshit. Kylie's ass is really the only legit memorable thing about that movie
As I said before I was pretty young when I saw it but already as a kid I thought it looked like a SF themed Halloween party. I also remember Ryu and Ken just being two punks. Not to mention Van Damme was the funniest with the US flag tattoo

MK got great word of mouth, opened strong and stayed strong, Street Fighter barely even had an opening weekend because the trailers and commercials looked like ass and the people who actually did see it told everyone it sucked.
These films aren't even operating on the same level. I mean, look at how MK handled Goro. A giant, non-human monster with 4 arms and they managed to translate that to live action fairly effectively. SF couldn't even get Blanka right. Seriously, they looked at pic related and said, "yeah, this will work." It was a fricking joke.

Based on all of the fan made making of documentaries for Street Fighter The Movie, where fans uncover loads of magazines and documents, the issue was that they got Jean Claude Van Damme and had to make the movie around him. Turning it into a G.I. Joe ripoff with martial arts elements. When in reality, with the Street Fighter story up to that point, this should've been much more Star Wars esque in terms of narrative approach. Something like Ken and Ryu being the leads entering into a world bigger and more fantastical than they expected would make more sense. But seemingly you can't tell that to a 1990s movie producer. It's probably why many genre movies nowadays are much more accurate, not prefect, because the producers were children when stuff like
this were around
Steven De La Souza (Writer of Commando and Die Hard) literally wrote the first draft over the weekend cuz they had a chance to pitch it to Capcom representatives visiting the US.

Yeah, you're right. Should've remember that, but in general the approach to this movie and those vidya gaem films like them feels much more cynical rather than genuine. Like, why else is Guile the lead while the focal leads of the games to that point are supporting characters?
I also think Mortal Kombat was better because the director was at the time a late 20 something who played the video games rather than a older aged hired gun who was working with what he was given. Though ironically, the former would become very hated for making an entire video game movie franchise that was nothing like the games

SF has solid moments of comedic performance but it is not what the games were all about. MK made a compelling version of the game narrative and kept to a tone that fit. As much as I love Zangief and Bison in the film, and as much as Cammy is a ridiculous one woman coom army, it was trapped in that common space a lot of other game adaptations fall in where they’re eternally embarrassed by their source material.

I read that about the Ryu theme before but I can't watch dubs without getting the felling I'm watching Kung Pow. Are they at least serviceable?
